I'm pretty sure someone from Bioware tweeted they were well aware planet scanning made people cry blood.

To relieve the tedium of planet scanning, I took a cheese grater to my forehead. Made it much more bearable.

Oh joy, the ten millionth thread on planet scanning. Personally, I'd rather scan planets than bounce around in the Mako due to the incredibly annoying wall climbing one had to engage in. They're supposedly modifying it, so hopefully the alternative is somewhat more palatable for others.

Why people try to compare the two when reasons for doing either don't match up is beyond me.

Planet scanning, unless you didn't care about your squad, was a requirement.  Using the mako to gather resources (and on any side mission) wasn't a requirement in any shape or form.

Why? Because group <x> inevitably complains that they hated planet scanning and that they want us all to revert to the days of tootling around in the Mako to do surveying a la ME1 to gather our resources. Then group <y> feels compelled to point out that not all of us loved tootling around in the Mako to gather resources after playing ME1 multiple times during which we were forced to try climb walls on planets created by sadistic devs.

I, personally, prefer planet scanning to surveying-hell in the Mako. Since the devs are modifying things, they will likely make planet scanning less annoying (for those annoyed by it) and/or throw some exploration in (one would hope - I like exploration - just don't give me such severe terrain that it turns things into torture instead of fun).

My point is that life has a fair share of 'suckitude'.  I play games to escape the suckitude - I prefer to have fun.  A game is supposed to be fun and not have too much highly disagreeable or menial tasks that completely blow.  I understand that we need SOME rescources, but they really went over the top with this.  Mini games are ok - but scanning really was not that fun because they put far FAR too much of it into the game.  Driving that mako around over some of those terrains was terrible too - I truly hated it - although I loved the views.

All we are asking for here is less menial tasks - or significantly less time spent doing it.  In a 20-30 hour game there should be far less that 1-2 hours of mindless scanning.  Keep in mind that the people who make these games are rich beyond your wildest dreams - they live upper crust priveledged lives with maids and servants and chauffers - they do not wash their own cars or have to replace headgaskets out in the cold.  They do not tear their hands open and bleed at their jobs like many of us do on a regular basis.  My personal belief is that they live the good life and do not conceptualize why some people play.  I think that they wish to include menial suckitude to portray  something that is missing from their own lives - they feel that it should be there - but they do not live in the same conditions as us.  I enjoy the thought of a game set in the futire - where all of the 'farming' and mindless drivel  is accomplished by robots, leaving me plenty of time to go forth and whup tail.

Xeranx - your modification doesn't address the fact that Mako had to be used for main story missions. even if you decided to skip majority of the game by doing main missions only - there are a minimum of 2 occurrences (Noveria and Ilos) where you cannot pass the game without using Mako. no matter how many times you played ME1 - you had to use the Mako at a minimum for Noveria and Ilos.

Actually it does in that I never mentioned anything about main story missions.  That's why I made the edit because I wanted to make it clear that I was "only" addressing side missions.

when you finished ME2 at least once - you are given 50000 of each resource to start (I cannot remember for sure, but I think you get the same headstart if you import a character with rich achievemnt... its been a while). you also can gather some resources from crates on missions. its not enough if you want all the bells and whistles, but it reduces the need for planet scanning to bare minimum. its more then enough to get every single ship upgrade necessary for everyone to survive the suicide mission. you'll even have some left over for a few personal upgrades here and there, without having to scan a single planet.

That I didn't know.  It still leaves planet scanning as a requirement for upgrading defenses and offense upgrades for Shepard and the entire crew however.  The point is planet scanning was made necessary.  The ability to mitigate the need only does just that, mitigate it.  It doesn't remove having to utilize planet scanning entirely.  That's why I say comparing the use of the mako in acquiring resources and planet scanning for the same purpose can't be done.  They're not on the same level of need.

Maybe the devs at Bioware feel that without planet scanning, ME3 won't have rpg elementzs.

You know, they could at least try to spice up the planet scanning a bit. Now this may be a bit cliche, but imagine sending down a probe which gets some strange readings. So Shepard sends down a team and the thing they've brought back has escaped in the hanger bay and killed everybody down there. Later, while this ancient horror walks away from your lifeless corpse you think "all I needed was 500 platinum".

Other than Star Wars Galaxies, no RPG I've played ever had me do something so tedious as mining for resources.

Don't mind planet scanning either; never an issue. Mako was once a problem, now it's alright. I can't say the same about the hammerhead though. Would be interesting to trade resources, or buy them as many suggested.

Xeranx - yes using Mako for resource gathering was not necessary. but the use of Mako itself - was. planet scanning can be avoided completely. Mako - cannot be. which is the point I was trying to make. you can finish the game without scanning a single planet and have everyone survive it. it won't be a complete playthrough and in some ways it would be tougher (kinda like walking instead of driving on main missions in ME1 when it IS possible and skipping most side quests)

however. you cannot finish mass effect 1 without having to drive a Mako. Mako, unlike planet scanning IS truly necessary.

MMORPG's do that all the time.  EVE in particular - you can pretty much making it your primary playstyle - mining.

Planet scanning is what set me off on mini games, making me realize most of them are just a hassle. I'd rather fist fight in TW1 for 2 hrs straight, or pick 100 locks in Oblivion...but planet scannning tops them all. Its the worst mini game I've ever played, hands down. And when I heard they were including it in ME3, for some reason I wasn't surprised. No matter. I'm on PC so I'll just be modding it out a second time.

By the way, if the devs at Bioware ever want to know how a mini game should be done, look at Dues Ex: HR. It puts the stupid mini games in ME2 to shame.

I'd prefer scanning to getting out of the mako and mining as much resources as were required in ME2!

So yeah, I'm agreeing with you. ME1 resource locating and ME2 resource gathering have absolutely nothing in common.

Indeed, only thing more tedious in MMO's is actually using the resources for crafting.

Fine.  I never contested the mako being needed in ME, but fine.  Planet scanning being completely skippable; I might just try that.  Is that with or without the import boost?

THIS GUY GETS IT -- even if there is a ton of sarcasm in his post, this is essentially my point. This might be the 10,000th thread on planet scanning, but damnit, why should it be my 10,000th time to scan planets every New Game+? For those on the PC, congrats, have a cookie, your problems are solved quite easily. Like I've written before, those who play on consoles face a bigger challenge.

The funny thing is I don't mind the crafting.  Well SWG being my only MMO, I didn't mind the crafting in that game...well where it pertained to being an artisan, tailor, armorsmith, or weaponsmith.  Bioengineering sounded so boring and the requirement for advanced creature samples discouraged me.  In fact, all the smith professions had elements of that, but you could do without them.  It was all extra.

Didn't mind planet scanning, takes me 15 minutes scanning per playthrough to get all minerals I need. So I'm really perplexed about the people finding it an unbearable chore. Personally I found the hacking minigames far more tiresome on repeat playthroughs.

each new character I've created in ME2 (or imported from ME1)  has been getting the resource and credit boost, ever since me finishing my first playthrough (with ME1 import).  I .. think the only boost I got for original import was couple of levels?  cannot remember for sure. but if you had finished at least one game of ME2 - you will be getting resource boost.  if you import ME1 lvl 60 character - you will be getting 5 levels, paragon/renegade points AND resource boost.

if you are starting completely fresh in ME2?  have to finish atl east one game first.

edited - as poster above me said - I miss being able to omnigel the hell out of locks a lot more then being bothered by planet scanning.  you cannot avoid those mini games, they are crappy on pc (even with gaming mouse, its still a bother) and they are freaking everywhere...  I avoid hacking bank vaults nowadays, but even if you avoid hacking for upgrades, you still have to hack at least one door on practicaly every main mission :/

Yeah, no, developers don't make that much money. Sure, most of them probably do get an above average salary, but most of them don't quite make enough to qualify as 'rich', by any real definition.

Also, if it takes you two hours to get all the minerals you need, you're doing something wrong. Thirty minutes, tops, and that's still less time than all the required driving in the Mako.

Stan, there was no skill involved at all. It was pure tedium.
