I was pretty turned off by it, actually, and I know a lot of regular players were as well.

No idea why some people actually enjoyed it. It'd be pretty neat if every planet had a unique texture that you could examine; then the scanning minigame would just be an extra, optional feature of the galaxy map.

At the moment, though, the whole 3D planet presentation is completely dependent on the scanning minigame for any sort of substance, and the minigame itself isn't even enough to redeem those horribly generic textures...

I didn't mind scanning so much. I liked it better than the Mako, which I enjoyed to a point. The Mako was only cool because it let the player explore the terrain on worlds. After a few planets and getting stuck on some not-so-flat mountains, driving the Mako got pretty old.

If there was a choice, I would pick the scanning over the Mako.

Perhaps they should give Shepard the ability to hire/save a bunch of miners to find resources for him/her. You can buy maps at outposts that suggest certain areas are better for certain materials and then order them to focus on the ones you need. Every once in a while you may get a message they're under attack and you'll have to go save them, or you'll lose them and be forced to go back to planet scanning old school.

I hate mining. If I could avoid it I would, but I'm not about to edit my 360 saves.

One very little thing I loved MUCH more about ME1 was that when you clicked on a planet, it zoomed in to only a select portion of it, and it was BEAUTIFUL for just about every planet you could see.

Now they're all just these spinning globe playthings. I'd rather we get the ME1 view of the planets over the ME2 ones.

Thing is, we're still selecting specific points on a planet to do missions. What I think they could/should have done is have it so when you click on a planet, you get the ME1 planet viewing(only a portion of it that looks realistic), and then if you want to "scan" for things to do, click again and it goes into the ME2 planet viewing.

Its extra, but I think it'd be a nice throwback to ME1.

I liked the Mako and Planet Scanning. I actually didn't like the Hammerhead.Talking about the actual vehicles themselves. They need the Mako, with detailed enviroment like the Hammerhead missions got.

It def wasn't as bad as people say it is. Yes it could be a bit tedious and slow and was my second least favourite part of the game (After the loading screens) But it only took a couple of minutes each time before I could move onto other things

I personally never hated mineral scanning. I just hated that it felt incomplete or broken.

I think what could've fixed it was to add dots on mineral nodes that registered between 5-10 on the scale. The nodes could even be colored based on what node it was:

Element Zero: Blue
Iridium: Green
Platinum: Silver
Palladium: Red

So simple a fix that players could gather mineral nodes when they needed to and not have to buzz-cut every planet for nodes.

I personally enjoyed the planet scanning my first few playthroughs. I liked reading the planet data and it was a good chance to work that into the game. It got rather tedious on subsequent plays though, but the resources you collected on missions just didn't cut it.

It would've been better if it was just one of a number of ways to get resources.

Good to see there are some people on here with actual attention spans.  Planet scanning really did not take up much of the game past the first playthrough.  After the first playthrough, you get 50000 of all resources, and an additional 5000 if you import from ME1.  55k of all resources right off the bat lets you do most of the pre-Horizon research without ever having to scan.  Plus you get resources in the missions themselves.  Also, if you spread out your scanning (you may have 1 hour total in scanning time by the end of the game), you don't have to do more than a few minutes at a time.  Do a mission, scan a few planets when you get back to the galaxy map, rinse, repeat as needed.  Taken in small doses like this, planet scanning serves its intended purpose: a break from the action.  But if you try to do it all at once, or go crazy and scan way more than you need to, then it seems monotonous.

I think they should make it such that you get all the resources you need in missions (main and side), and thus if you want to research stuff you need to do missions.  This encourages players to seek out side missions.  But, then make it such that you can still scan planets if you want to hold off on certain missions and you just need some resources.  This way, those who want all the upgrades ASAP can scan planets, but those who don't mind waiting a few more missions can skip it.

I don't mind the IDEA of scanning, but execution just felt really out of step with the rest of the game. I believe the "proper" use of the scanning was intermittent bursts of activity between missions, but I disliked the scanning so much, and I was tired of being short on resources so I just got as much of it done as possible in one go.

I think I would prefer a more "active" solution to resource gathering. I'm not sure what, maybe actually piloting the probe and manually gathering the resources. It might be a little to resource intensive to be feasible, but just staring at a planet (which was agonizingly slow, still kinda is even after the update) and numbly listening to edi say "probe away."

Or wait! Maybe if we got special events during scanning" A random reward kinda like the scattered anomalies in ME1. Not full missions per se, but a little even that says "you found a derelict!" or "you found a league of seven artifact" you know what I mean?

That was a nice idea   =)    I like it.

I myself enjoy scanning planets, and driving around the mako. Hmmm.... the planets are a little better. Love to hack into everything that I see so mini-games are really my kind of thing.

What I liked better in ME
* Medals and writings. It was more of a surprise what you would find on a planet. I enjoyed that. I liked reading how my crew got the probe and found some medal of a long dead turian. It was nice hearing how my crew worked on the ship.

What I liked better in ME2
* Knowing if a planet had been scanned before. Seeing straight away if a system is done. 100% happy for that.
* The scanning-thing is pretty much meditative for me, I scan a little before I land the Normandy in any system slowly working towards everything in the galaxy being scanned.
* I prefer scanning to the mako. Had a ton on problems with some hard to reach places on some planets. It didn't get that relaxed stage that I have with planet-scanning.
* Always happy when finding a new mission when scanning.

Hope to see in ME3
* some form of scanning or searching for minerals that supports exploration
* not only finding surprise missions but medals or other things equivalent of them that can be used in game. Nothing that perhaps is vital for some plotpoint but I would be very happy if I could chance upon finding a set of Salarian relics or just something that could give me the tiniest edge when trying to get them to do what I want them to do in the galactic war.

I liked the idea of upgrading the Normady SR-2 armor and weapons etc, with planet scanning but they should make a compromise where we can be able to sell mined mineral resources for credits at trading places or shops in ME3.   :D

Mining aspect was boring, wouldve been better if the game had a combination of landing on planets with a vechile and scanning.

People might still want to talk about it. Newer people.

Besides, if they went through the forum (or did a search), found an old thread, and then replied to it, they would most likely get accused of necroing an old thread. It's a double-edged sword when it comes to topics like this.

In reply to the topic: Yes, I could not stand it! It was an unfortunate roadblock in what was generally a fluid game. Thankfully, Bioware has taken notice and has revamped the system (at least to our knowledge).

Not gonna lie, at first, planet scanning was sleep inducing when I first played Mass Effect 2. Over this last year and 8 months I've grown tolerant of the diversion though. I just hope something more engaging is replacing it in Mass Effect 3.

I agree with the multiple runs bit. It might've been interesting (even rewarding) the first time around but starting a new game with the knowledge that there's a few hours of scanning ahead, even with import bonuses, wasn't very fun.

Come to think of it: we haven't actually heard much about the resource system yet. ME2's marketing behemoth trumpeted the 'interactive planet scanning' but maybe they're being a little more circumspect this time?

Now replaying ME1 for a fresh ME2 game.... I totally mako > scanning....

I really liked the mako... it was the mountains from hell that I had to climb over I hated

Didn't mind planet scanning, takes me 15 minutes scanning per playthrough to get all minerals I need. So I'm really perplexed about the people finding it an unbearable chore. Personally I found the hacking minigames far more tiresome on repeat playthroughs.

Lol...it's pointless, why would you want it in the game?

More pointless then hacking minigames? picking up minerals from caches on missions? shooting down mooks?
I can use Gibbed to give me all the minerals I need sure. but that makes picking up minerals on missions pointless, something that breaks the 4th wall for me. A big part of an RPG is gathering resources to prioritize upgrades. with unlimited resources the research feature becomes pointless as well.
Since minerals are there in abundance, and are so easy to gather I chose to create my own limitations, like only probing a planet once. Or only probing good planets and above once. This makes mineralscanning more interesting since it's exciting to find a really big node. I also edit away the 300000 starting credits to force me to prioritize upgrades, but even then I  have everything by the end of the game.

I didn't mind it, for the most part, but I swear that after a while, it sounded like EDI was saying "plobe launched", and I kept thinking, what's a "plobe"?

Was a turned off by planet scanning? No, not really. But then again, I'm not sure I can objectively answer that on account of my never having used Mass Effect as an aphrodisiac.
