I think people who *hate* the scanning with passion are just overacting.
Yes, I don't like scanning at all, but I don't understand where this fiery hate comes from...

That may be so, but not all of us who hate it give so much to it that we gnash our teeth when the topic comes up.  However, it was sleep inducing.  I hated thinking that I couldn't advance until I got a number of any particular resource for the next upgrade because I didn't know what would happen during the course of the game.  I seriously thought that there would be times where Shepard and co would come under fire when I heard that there would be upgrades for the Normandy.  It's why I made sure I could upgrade armor and weapons as soon as possible.

Not to mention, just so i could enjoy the game i did all the scanning before progressing the story too much. And i often forgot why i was playing the game after scanning for a bit. Planet scanning really draws you away from enjoying the game. Thats my problem with it.

I'm turned off by strawberry milk.

I think it's been established that planet scanning is bad.

I liked it the first playthrough but I did many playthroughs after that and I got really sick of it. I dislike the bypass minigame more. ME1 had that awesome 360 Frogger game (on the PC at least) which I still enjoy after an insane amount of playthroughs.

Personally, I enjoy the the quiet interlude of scanning, I usually do scans when I don't have enough time to do the more exciting assignments and missions in the game.

Good point.  There needs to be something in the game to provide a respite from the action.  Arguably, conversing with squadmates could fill that role, but each squadmate is only going to have so much dialogue in the game.

Has anyone explored the mining in Pokemon Pearl/Diamond/Platinum?  It was more visceral than ME2's scanning/mining, perhaps because it involved a touch-screen.  I found it enjoyable.  Frequent and tangible rewards and a bit of guesswork lead to a better mini-game, in my opinion.

I always wondered why the mineral scanners could not operate automatically, and instead required Shepard's constant supervision.

"Shepard! The Reapers are attacking!"
"Can it wait for a bit, I'm in the middle of some planet scanning..."

The Mako exploration had more purpose, the mineral locations were conveniently scattered alongiside the main route, wheras planet scanning involves randomly zig-zagging through a system in hopes of finding some eezo.

The only thing that helped in ME2 was the achievement bonus that gave you a stock of 300 000 minerals each for subsequent playthroughs. Please bring it back for ME3, it helped a lot. ^_^

You know, it'd be awesome if we could just buy upgrades with credits. That would work pretty well.

I have been saying this for 2 years straight. People seem to enjoy doing planey scanning for 2 hours on every char. Or demand it to be replaced by the mako. Here is an idea, get rid of both. Money is supposed to buy you things, not minerals.

Imagine buying an xbox 360, and then it turning out to be nothing but schematics, now you have to find the minerals, turn them into chipsets, and put them together.

I mean really, isn't tech supposed to make life easier, not more tedious?

**** the dev who came up with the planet scanning, it's the cancer that causes me to not play ME3 every day, i would make another 50 char as soon as they got rid of it.

And don't give me that "gibbed editor" crap, we SHOULDNT HAVE TO RESORT TO THAT, the game should ****ing do this itself, i mean WTF. I never had to worry about this bull**** in ME1, WHY CHANGE THE MOST BASIC THING IN A GAME? buy it or loot it, that's all items should require.
Do the devs think they are the head of Lionhead?

There isn't even an emoticon that comes near the expression i get when i have to go through another scanning session:(:(:sick::sick::sick::sick::sick:

no one liked the scanning minus a few  die hard fanboys who never criticise bioware. It was long, tedius, and exausting and we have to do it to get a half decent ending.

If you HAD to have scaning it should have been

click planet/solar system
press A to scan
scan complete

It should be scrapped if not already, like with the red veins of death... i still remember cringing when i saw them first on the old forums...

Also the unskippable cutscenes kill replayability , why devs still put them in games is the question

I found planet scanning cathartic, I'd usually mute my TV and listen to music while I strip mined a star cluster or two. But that may have just been a coping mechanism for the boredom.

I actually enjoyed planet scanning and hated the Mako. Sure, the scanning is slow and whatever, but it took me the same amount of time to launch a bunch of probes than it took me to get to one point of the friggin' map to get some badges...

Except that the mako exploration for minerals isn't vital to the game, getting your resources is very important.

I only once collected the minerals in ME1, but every time i play ME2 i have to scan planets.

It's like the tedious me2 CIC, it's a ****ing CIC, all it should do is let you point at something, and go there. Why is Sheperd flying around wasting feul?

That doesn't mean they're unaware of its lack of popularity.  Most reviews of ME2 touch on it as a negative aspect, to say nothing of the complaints in the forums.

Nothing will beat the Original Mass Effect Exploration. I hope Exploration like in Mass Effect return, Mass Effect 2 were boring, you didn't have the freedoms. The planet scanning weren't that fun after awhile, it got annoying. I hops they are fixing that. They should bring back vehicles with better vehicles, it's the future afterall.

I agree with this. It was nice to explore worlds in the Mako. Much more interesting. And exploring in the Hammerhead was a horrible experience for me in ME2. I hope it gets kicked to the curb in ME3.

I actually liked the Planet Scanning. Especially since you could tell immediately if there was something more than just Resources on the Planets.

I enjoyed the Mako exploration in Mass Effect, as well...so some combo of the two would be fine by me.

Yeah but when you didn't need resources searching for anomalies sucked. I saved just about all sidequests for the end of the game and going to each planet in each system is a major pain. There weren't as many planets to explore in ME1 and it was for the better.

I hated scanning as I played insanity and the only way to advance was to spend an hour at most scanning planets for resources this being NG+. Make replaying hard as hell, because the thought of scanning planets was always ticking in my head.

I can certainly see the drawbacks that others see...

I found it interesting reading all the Planet descriptions, but we got that with ME as well.

I really wouldn't mind a combo of the two...maybe Planet Scanning if anyplace we end up going is uncharted...I did miss driving around in the MAKO, but if you check the Threads there's a ton of MAKO-hate out there too.

Once I got used to it, I enjoyed using the Hammerhead. I kind of like the fact that there were (for better or worse depending on your opinion) different vehicles in both Games.

For 3, I would love to see a small Space Vehicle...a bit of ship-to-ship Combat would be fun.

Mineral scanning is going to be changing. The team hasn't locked down exactly what they are doing with iut, so I can't say how it is or isn't like what you used in ME2 yet, but I can say it will not be the same as in ME2. The idea of exploration and the nonlinear aspect is very important to the team and to the series, so that won't change, but how it actually works will be different in ME3.
