A soul hahahahahaha that's as ridiculous as thinking the magic zombie was real.

If Shepard was truly dead, and his "soul" flew off to heaven for two years, wouldn't he remember being there when he came back to life? Although, if he was only "mostly dead", then his soul would still be in his body the whole time.

Personally, I see no reason to believe in a soul (there's no evidence to support their existence), so all in all it really doesn't matter.

Shepard could have a soul. The mind, soul, and brain are usually closely associated in spritual discussions.

Shepard's brain died from lack of oxygen. If you believe the brain exists as a complicated balance of electricity and chemistry, it would be hard to believe it can be made operational again. The belief that chemical imbalances can be corrected has been widely debated since there is no established chemical balance in the first place. Just about everything you do influences your brain chemistry. Changing the chemical balance of the brain to fix death sounds next to impossible. There's no way to measure who Shepard was based off chemistry.

You would need a soul or sprit to bring him back exactly as he was.

Yeah, like I said, this is where Bioware left it open. Shepard never says, I don't remember what happened while I was dead. Shepard just didn't know he/she was dead for two years. There is an option recall saying, I was in some kind of coma. They may think what was happening while dead was all a dream, again to my thing about the brain creating hallucinations. On the other hand, Shepard may go on to believe that he/she went somewhere as a spirit. It's not an uncommon belief for spirits to not realize they are dead. I think that was the whole theme behind the Sixth Sense.

You can also look at it from the stand point of reincarnation. With that belief, people never remember their previous lives or what it was like as a spirit. So people can believe Shepard did become a spirit, but once revived does not remember it.

As much as I don't believe in souls, I'd much rather have Bioware leave this subject open for interpretation by the player.

You think they replaced his brain with an AI?

I do like the crack theory that Shepard is an AI using Shepard's brain as a memorybank. And it's not entirely outlandish either- there's a CDN story about President Huerta that brings up the same question. (Except with a VI)

Nope.

I mean, we could run a psychological test, but since that will probably prove you are sane and your belief doesn't pose any threat to society, we can't make you stop believing there is an invisible rainbow unicorn in the sky just because we think it's BS.

Well, something we can agree on.

My Shep's a ginger, so...

Okay, no, she's not. But default female Shep is almost a redhead. Yes, I know, redheads are NOT gingers.

And if you disagree, find us ones shred of evidence proving that they do.

Comatose. The body has functionality, individual is not "alive."

(And that's what makes Lazarus impossible. Once the soul is departed, it can't be restored. No amount of scientific advances will change that)

I'm not seeing your purpose behind doing this. You and I agree that they don't exist. I thought you wanted to stop people from believing in them? Now you want to allow them to believe in them?

A rather interesting question. I never stopped to think about that particular aspect of sheperd's death/ rebirth. My personal belief is that human beings along with all living creatures are more than mere flesh. I imagine that using this line of thinking, Shepard's soul/essence/mind/personality went into  a dormant state.  A period of waiting if you will, for the body's resurrection. Correct me if wrong, but doesn't the Lazarus project begin shortly after his death? I don't recall the specifics.

But honestly there's no real way of answering this question either from the religious or atheistic/agnostic positions, it's much too complicated even for a science fiction game.
Bioware left that particular loophole open to the player for obvious reasons.

For me I think He( Shepard) is as he was, his personality hasn't drastically changed since his rebirth, so for me that means he still has his soul. I think  in my opinion your soul is you, your memories, beliefs, fears, passions, experiences and personality all make up your 'soul' . You as you now are essentially, at least that is how I understand it. So to cut a long story short- yes Shepard has a soul. From my perspective at least.

Thanks, I like yours too, even if I don't agree with some of your views on life. But that's just me, each to his/her own as they say. The world would be a better place, if people actually did that.

A lot of people these days aren´t religious, yet they still choose to believe in metaphysical concepts like the soul. Anyway, for the people that believe in souls, if shepard was souless he/she would have noticed it, traditionally there are seriously bad side effects of not having your soul. For the people who don´t believe in souls, then there is no problem to start with.
