No. The vast majortity of people now are religious, which has always been the case. And the vast majority choose not to use basic logic to determine issues like this. They go with the warm and fuzzy feelings.
I swear to the invisible rainbow unicorn, garden gnomes exist. Look you can buy them on Amazon.
Is Shep's soul still there?

Forgive me if I have misunderstood but your statement above sounds rather arrogant and superior to me. Why are you taking that tone with him?

Look at someone in a coma - they are "alive" the body is still functioning but "They" the person is not there. The memories, emotions, hopes, dreams, fears, etc are just not there its like the higher level consciousness is just gone - well they where does it go? What happens to it?
I think to really answer this question of "Do we have a soul?" you have to first ponder the question of " What makes us "alive"?

Now, now. The rumor that gingers don't have souls is a vicious lie. Of course they have souls. Most have several. They collect them:lol:

While I personally didn't see Bioware's decision to gloss over the philosophical issues surrounding rebirth as a problem, I didn't really think avoiding it was necessary. I seem to remember a possible conversation with Ashley about God that allowed Shepard to either express or reject religious beliefs.
Just have a whole bunch of different options on the dialogue wheel that relate to a few basic beliefs. And one "cop-out" option (ie: "I don't want to waste time thinking about it") for those who don't like any of the options available.

Its not but it is kinda of the annoying because it comes off as trying to avoid controvesy just to avoid controvesy - it the same thing with the toned down sex scenes and the same sex relationship. I with its a game about options so so just give some options maybe some surface discussion nothing to deep. So if the player wants to explore it they can - if not simply move on to the next.

Whether they thought about it or not it's left open for the player to decide. Would have been nice to have the option to discuss it in the game, but you know.

Or it could be they didn't think about it. Every time any hero in comics/movies/games has died and been brought back extremely few had any deep philosophical and religious questions about it. They just went back to work.

This is true but Comics always use different plot devices to bring people back that side step religious discussion. Most involving time travel, altering reality on a base level to Alien abuction and invasion of the body snatchers and the clasic Clones, To virus that reanimate the dead that were created by characters I think what leaves things so open with Mass Effect is that - they just rebuilt him on like the 65 million dollar man. So it leaves some debate open. Always there characters in comics that have died and have stayed very, very dead dispite alot things.

From a Jewish, Christian, and Muslim perspectives, there is a soul and once released it cannot be retrieved to the body unless God wills it to be so. Therefore the question becomes one of can one convince God to do so.
I would have to opine that the answer to your question resides completely within the individual to whom it is asked and it is therefore relevant only to that individual.
How's that for a philosophical answer?

It does'nt really matter in the end though. Its a video game. We can rationalize it however we want.
I also have to say that I am pleased with how mature this thread has been overall.

For those of us who believe in a soul I have an idea. I think at some point someone says that there was a little spark of life left in Shepard (aka only "mostly dead"). If we accept that as true then theoretically his soul never left his body.

In the Gospels, Lazarus makes only a brief appearance.
In the Apocrypha, however, there are tales of Lazarus traveling all over the Roman Empire in his stealth trireme, the "Zama", recruiting a team of Iron Age super commandos, including: a grizzled Roman Legion veteran turned mercenary, a Briton druidic priestess, a Greek doctor/inventor, a Germanic berserker, one of Ptolemy's infamous female spies, and a warrior/rabbi with a secret past.
Together they traveled the ancient world, fighting crime, righting wrongs and (surprisingly) meeting many of the same people over and over again. All the while fighting to prevent the return of the ancient Mesopotamian gods of death and destruction.[/quote]
This was hilarious!
But I looked through my copy of the Apocrypha, and couldn't find this particular story - must have been one of the "lost" Gnostic ones.
However, I did hear that this did inspired a Sci-Fy channel Saturday night, low budget, badly done CGI, original movie with one of the lesser (over-weight) Baldwins playing Lazarus...
And Felica Day has a cameo as a spunky Jewish nerd...
