So, we know that Thedas seems to have most of the same plants (including edible plants) that are found here on Earth.  The continent Thedas has eggplant, a vegetable native to India that arrived in Europe circa. 1500. What I'm curious about is whether they also have the New World crops - tomatoes, potatoes, corn and chocolate. I don't recall any references to the above off the top of my head, but it's the kind of thing that could come up in banter or the condex without my noticing it at the time.

(This question comes to you courtesy of my tabletop roleplaying group. Every time I run a session, they ask me a new question about food - last time it was Dalish elves and cheese. Maybe they are planning to retire from adventuring and open a sandwhich shop.)

I seem to recall corn fields in either DA:O or DA:A. And Alistair talks about his Fereldan lamb and pea stew with Leliana.

I would imagine though that all manner of vegetables exist in Thedas and no actual crop evidence is needed - after all, cheese exists and yet we never see any cows or goats.

It's odd, as an english person, to hear english actors refer to an aubergine as an eggplant!

In the Captured! adventure the other members of your patrol had a run in with the assistant quartermaster over potatoes.

Tomatoes are New World crops? You learn something new every day...

As for your question, I fear you are putting more thought into it than the game developers themselves. So feel free to draw the lines as to what crops are native, what are exotic and what are unheard of yourself.

Alistair says Fereldens boil everything until it's an indistinguishable grey sludge anyway...

That's exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for! If they've got potatoes, it's likely that they also have tomatoes and corn. (Cocoa beans only grow in warmer climates than those we've visited so far.)

There are plenty of Bronto's though :P

Do you think that they actually are tomatoes? Or it is a vegetable that has many of the same characteristics of a tomato and that BW is just calling it a tomato in order to simplify things.

Actually, yes. Those are also New World crops, and there are definitely pumpkins around in Origins.

I haven't seen any mention of the above... I wonder if they're careful to avoid such words (eg, Chocolate is from the Aztec), as they might break immersion. Personally, I hate seeing french words / phrases passed off as "Orlesian" for a similar reason.

Then again, English is so full of borrowed words anyway... maybe I'm just splitting hairs.

Yes. I remember 4 or 5 random encounters in Origins that took place amongst a pumpkin patch. There are definitely pumpkins in Thedas.

Which makes me wonder if they have something like Halloween as well? They have Satinalia, which roughly corosponds to Christmas/Roman Saturnalia festival, from the sounds of it. Halloween is an ancient Celtic harvest festival. Maybe similar holidays/festivals occur in Thedas as well?

Trick or Treating Meredith is probably a bad idea.

And now that you mention it, I think I remember potatoes being discussed as well.

A few other New World plants/vegetables/ spices that are native to the New World that were unknown in the old world until the New World was discovered:

Vanilla
Pecans
Allspice
Chili peppers
Bell Peppers
Wild Rice

I am unsure if these things are in Thedas.

And then, of course, you have the turkey, a bird that was native to the new World and introduced to Europe. And turkeys definitely exist in Thedas, Wynne mentioned it once.

I'd skip the begging for treats  and just get to the trick part. Hopefully involving exploding Jack-o-Lanterns, Molotov cocktails, and using a ouija board to summon Freddy krueger.

Thedas clearly isn't a direct analogy of Europe - after all it's in the southern hemisphere.

I wonder if the Qunari introduced any new crops or animals.

Possibly. i remember reading somewhere that the Qunari have Aztec-like pyramids and architecture, so maybe they are from the proverbial "new world"

Pumpkins are definitely known in Ferelden. The Harvest Festival Ring is decorated with a vine and pumpkin motif.

Well Thedas does have more variety to climates and terrain than eruope so I'd say its reasonable they would have better variety of crops.

According to the lore, I would point out that Thedas was colonized by humans back in the days of Arlathan. So it's likely that many of the crops that are available in Thedas would have been imported during that time. Also, the Qunari did control large portions of Thedas for centuries, so it goes to reason that they imported their own crops along with the Qun.

The pumpkin patch is outside Howe's estate, and I didn't even notice it was there until I played Leliana's Song and had to bury dead guards there.

When are eggplants mentioned?

Eggplants are mentioned in one of the Bone Pit quests. At the docks Jensen's co-worker mentiones them. Something along the lines "Blablabla... my eggplant delivered more than half of the bastards of South Reach, hahaha!" (Why am I not able to memorize really important things?)
