Tbh this shields stats aren't even that great , I just want a long term good shield that doesn't look like a gigantic china plate someone drew a picture on with mustard (Aeducan shield is what I'm stuck with long term otherwise)

That or the shield you steal from that guy in the orzammar assembly , but that STILL looks like a giant plate....

Well Ironically I unequipped my shield in hopes that maybe for some reason it would recognize that I have no shield and give it to me and then it did lol

Keep in mind that if you kill her on sight, you won't be able to get the gold hidden in the fireplace.

I pretty much just skimmed through the first 3 posts before typing this:

When I did the keep I told her I would go destroy the tower (first time I did not have her seal the Veil first, second time I did) and after going there and talking to the mage I returned to her (did not kill the mage) and killed her. Both times she dropped the shield.

The one time I killed her right off the bat she only dropped the armor. So it seems the best way to get the shield is to trick her.

Here's a method to try for getting the shield. Keep in mind I'm still not convinced that the shield doesn't just drop on dumb luck, and there doesn't seem to be any consensus about text options / actions to increase drop percentage, but...



Set up 3 save files, 1 to fight Sophia without making the deal, 1 to make the deal with Sophia but not kill Avernus, and 1 to make the deal with Sophia and kill Avernus.

Save just before talking to Sophia or talking to Avernus, respectively.



If one save isn't producing in however-many attempts, try a different save. Yes, this way will take time, but reading some of the other posts indicate some people are pouring a lot of time into this anyway (I don't blame them, I think this shield is worth it).

P.S. I got the shield on my fourth try on the "kill Avernus" save.

I don't know about the multiple save / dialog theory. I got my first shield by doing what I've always done: let Avernus live. Since that's different from riptide's kill Avernus save, I'm guessing it has nothing to do with dialog.



If you reload over and over, you will see that her drops do vary between kills. Thus, I bet there's just some random event determining her drops and the shield is but 1 item in a very long list. Given that she usually drops 1 item other than the warden armor, getting the shield could take a lot of tries.

I just got it today and what really sucks is that after 7 play throughs this is the first time and i am running a mage, total crapolla but at least i know it is real.

I cant say ive ever come across random drops in my entire playthrough except for the Star Metel, im left to wonder, if your playing on Nightmare difficulty and you start a new game for Human Noble origin will you find on oren a Sword of Truthiness, just a thought, maybe its a pickpocket item, who knows? haha

what's funny is, I've spend about 8-9 hours reloading on it, generally i started working backwards making a deal with her killing avernius and so forth, trying variations.

I've killed Avernius had her seal the gate, got the extra gold etc



this time what happens i walk in kill her and bang it drops.

I've done that before on one playthrough and the on the next I got it after 30 something tries. This and the Gaxang Wall Shield drop have to be the most annoying thing in the game.

I got it after 10 or so tries. Totally worth it for my AW. The mana regen lets me run shimmering shield forever with the rest of my gear.

I see how annoying it is and least can be done by devs could be raising the drop rate. However... "This isn't mmo wtf random???" doesnt make much sense, MMOs have competition between players that require everyone to get the best gear available. They also have a completely different style of play.

You can't compare the drops between two games. We don't need this particular item at all. I guess devs meant it as a very special shield that only few players see. I kinda like the idea to be honest. But if you actually want to get it, then it's your own passion about the item. I dont think it's fair to say it's a design issue. It's probably not meant to be had by everyone, simple as that.



Then again, having a higher drop rate should be a good idea if it takes 50+ tries to get it.

I got the tower shield when I said "Look! the ward's shield is right on sophia, and I won't be able to loot it" then I looted her and I got it. I said that on my circa 30th try. unlike rest of the set, it is not dragonbone and you get it as silverite.

OK i tried probally 10 times on normal started gettin pissed with long fights. Did casual for bout 5 yimes than heard people say it has higher drop chance with nightmare. I did nightmare 3 times no drop. Finally i did it one more time and said,"This bi*ch aint going to drop it i guess ill just betrayer her. Than BAM she dropped it haha so now i am happy lol:)

Dialog choices: no effect.

Difficulty setting: no effect.

Random chance is consistent, but small. You just have to keep trying. I've gotten several shields off her this way. Once on the second try, once on the 6th, other attempts took much longer, all following the same quest/dialog path (kill Avernus, double cross Sofia for the gold).

I didn't get the warden's shield but I did try for the fade wall which, imo, is better. I waited for Gaxkang to be down to about 5% health and then switched to nightmare just before the killing blow. 4 attempts later I was 1 keening blade and 1 fade wall shield richer



Man, that shield is awesome!

As for a counter-story I tried at least 100 times over 3 days in my last playthrough to get the shield. It never dropped.

Same play-through I got Fade Wall on the first try.  Go figure.

First time through on my first AW I only tried for the Tower shield (On nightmare of course) and it didnt drop. Second AW I was dedicated and reloaded the fight maybe 25-30 times. Never dropped. So out of randomness I changed the difficulty back down to Hard and it dropped first time. Very very weird.



I was super happy of course but a little disappointed due to the fact that it has Duncan's Shield description and not its own (On xbox). Oh well. Even more disappointed when I remembered I "wasted" time getting the shield as Cailan's Arms are way way better. lol



P.S. Spellweaver + Fade Wall > All other S&S combos

It seems to me an awful lot of effort to get a piece of gear that has no apparent benefit other than cosmetic. Sounds too much like work.

Side note: I don't think that difficulty has any actual effect on drop chances for this or for Fade Wall--I've gotten both on Normal and raising/lowering difficulty hasn't seemed to change the percentage chances (rare).

On nightmare the drop rate of potions lowers substantially so by lowering potion drop rate you raise weapon and armour drop rate(theoretically). This isn't going to have an incredibly large effect but it does seem to help a little...very little.

I've defeated her 5 different times in 5 different playthroughs and haven't, until now, known that she drops a shield. Seriously, whoever heard of a random drop in a solo rpg game...

After reading this, I have killed Sophia maybe 20x's before obtaining the shield. The only problem is the fact that the descriptions reads it's Duncan's Shield... The name is Warden Tower Shield, but the message is really off...
