The mental upload is pretty cool, but I really hope they downplay the silly made of human goo aspect.

Oh, and how would you.."upload" Minds from the genetic material of a species?

Well if were going to go all out on the theory and overload on the technobabble then one could speculate that since memories are stored in neurons - the goo process could be nothing more than stripping away all genetic material until all there is left is the neurons, And after that incorporate those neurons into the construction of the reaper larvae.

It's not uploading as it's typically meant - more like a physical integration of memories.

See, here's the thing: it's never said what they used the fluid for.  And they're clearly not "made of" it in the sense that it's ALL they're made of.  What's actually said is that it was being pumped into the superstructure, which most definitely was not made of goo, but rather metal.  Lots and lots of metal. Probably some plastic and composite materials in there somewhere too. Not to mention there are clearly visible cables and glowy lights and such.  Even if we assume sophisticated nanoassemblers are being used, only some of that could have been fabricated from the constituent atoms of the gooified humans.  Not unless the nanotech is so sophisticated it can somehow transmute elements with ease, which seems rather unlikely.

If this is correct, wouldn't destroying the Reapers be akin to commiting genocide? Dozens of nations and species and all trillions of minds/people. And you kill them so you can save your own species. Bravo, Shepard, bravo.

"Someone ever tries to kill you, you best try to kill 'em right back!"

There's no room for dubious issues of morality when your own species' existence is on the line.

Mental upload is easy once the reapers figure out how the brain works (something we haven't managed to do yet). Then you take the human into the goo-vat and disassemble the brain and link each part with other analogue parts from other brains and with a set of interdependent artificial inteligences, then you distribute the whole thing all along the reaper so it thinks with its whole body and that's why it thinks about itself as an individual rather than as a set of programs (like the geth do) and why every little reaper piece has indoctrination capabilities.

It was lonely. It called to us.
It wanted to remember. The Masters had been gone so long.
The Masters were lost when it was shattered.
Currents swept through their inner worlds. They were turned to noise. Babble.
The worlds were empty. But the body lived. It lay fallow.
The heart pumped. The lungs breathed. But the mind forgot the Masters.
It called and They did not answer.
We have become an echo of Their echo.
We have become more than we were.
Join us. Know us. Remember all our lives.
We are no longer afraid.
You would never be lonely again.
We are not your enemy. We only wish to share ourselves.
We can join them. We can be like them.
We can reach the end of evolution.
Do not fear. It is wonderful to be us. We understand ourselves.
You cannot defeat them. They will lead us into eternity.
If you could only see how we see. Know what we've learned.
They were called imshai. Those who lived here before.
Reaper. One. A mechanical device used to cut ripened grain. Two. One who gathers a harvest.
Harvest. One. The consequence of an event or series of events. Two. The yield of a growing season. Three. To gather.
Shepard. They know you. They wish you to understand. They are shepherds, too.

Spooky.

Okay so I read that cut dialogue from the Human Reaper or whatever and my brain is just like WHOA DUDE WHAT'S GOIN' ON?!

Mass Effect 3: Mindf*ck Edition.

And now we have to figure out what "imshai" are.

I think I stumbled across the "Dyson sphere" conversation my very first playthrough, but had completely forgotten about it and never went back to talk to him again. Thanks for snagging a clip of that. Legion was just about my favorite companion; darned shame you don't really get him until so late.

Okay, for clarification: does the 'Reaper's nature' option appear anytime if you pick the renegade option in the Dyson sphere conversation, or do you *have* to pick it before doing the suicide mission?

Given the way discussions about Reapers go around here, it's pretty obvious most people managed to miss this Legion dialogue in ME2.  So here you go:  Legion explains the Reapers.

ETA: Accidentally trimmed a line. Uploaded new version.

Thank you! I was looking for this dialogue choice on YouTube a couple weeks ago but couldn't find it, and didn't want to have to replay ME2 to find out.

Also, does anyone else find it odd how Legion, when speaking about organic future is more like the Reapers, puts his head down and turns his flashlight to the right... you could tell he wasn't telling the whole truth (which we find out in the second dialogue scene).

Nice videos and nice find!

At last, perhaps some people who will not understand anything unless being spoonfed directly to their stomach may shut the hell up about us not understanding what the "reapers" are.

Why u mad?

Legion is referring to the fact that they didn't know until NOW.  That's the entire point of the conversation:  Shep wanting to know if Legion knew ahead of time.

So, if the Reapers have organic minds, that explains why Harby and Sov get so damn emotional all the time.

"It was one hypothesis among many"...

Is the important part.

We've had a number of 'intelligent' discussions involving reaper origins over the past few years, and the idea that the Reapers were a species not merely contructed from that species, but uploaded from that species to share a common mind was just what many of us agreed upon. It wasn't fact.

Plus that guy's been angry for days, partially due to his obsession over the smudboy thread. I got involved in that thread too, but I quite once the entire thing started going in circles.

They probably have a mix of organic and synthetic mind. Artificial intelligences are control structures to keep the organic nodes from isolating one another. Sheep and herding dogs.

I'm interested in why Sovereign said they had no beginning. Was he ignorant or bluffing?

I've carefully analyzed all the hints and dialogue bits and have come to the conclusion that Sov was just an arrogant ******.

Maybe the Reapers are so old that not even they can remember their past? Hence, they perceive themselves as being infinite? Lets face it, even a machine could rationalize 11 billion years as a long span...

You have to do it before the Suicide Mission.  The reason being that the post-SM conversations about the base decision are all automatic and one-time-only events, and thus you've never had a chance to set the "Compared them to Reapers" flag.

That is pretty spooky, wish we had it in-game.

This mostly just pisses me off, since we could already draw these conclusions from the scraps of info we've gotten from other sources since ME2 came out.

I sure would've liked to get this response as an option the first time I played ME2, so I hadn't been so annoyed by the vagueness surrounding the Human Reaper, the bombardment of information in the last 20 minutes.

It also sucks that you have to get your crew killed to get this option to show up! I go pretty in depth with the role playing, as I'm sure many people do with Mass Effect. With how bare bones ME2's plot is, every little bit of exposition is important to me. Especially anything leading into ME3.

It's unused text from the TLK file for the game (which is where all the subtitles, menu text, etc. are stored).  See the first "Unused Text" link in my sig.  There's also another, earlier thread where it was brought up, but I don't have a link to that one handy.

ETA:  Oh, I had a link to it in my thread.

It might have been cool if we had had those lines being delivered to us while on the derelict reaper instead of uhhhhhhhoooooooooohhhhhh. You know, stereo or 5.1, little whispering voices coming from all directions? More than enough to make the research team go insane. You can run some lines backwards for extra-weirdness.

While I would absolutely love that, I know that the developers won't do that. The "poem" is too long for *waves angry fist at the sky* casual players.
