The way power evolution seems to be now is that you have to choose either to being a powerful conversationalist via high paragon/renegade scores or a powerful combatant, why do we have to choose between the two if I might ask?

Plus, opting for combat powers might make the battles slightly easier but opting for dialogue powers unlocks whole decisions and outcomes you might never have experienced otherwise.

i actually like having to choose between them, it adds tension from competing interests, and makes the game more replayable, each shep more unique

I wonder if BioWare has metrics on this.

For me, personally, it's never a choice. I don't have a single playthrough where I didn't max out the conversation boosting skills first, and then anything else with what was left over.

Personally I hope more outcomes will be based on our past actions, and varied dialogue choices, rather than choosing the persuade button for quick resolution.

you seem to be under the impression that the choice between increased power/weapon damage and increased power duration or reduced power cooldown, which is the typical trade-off of the class evolution alongside the 70%/100% paragon/renegade choice, somehow means you're doing less damage overall. This is most likely not the case. I haven't done the number-crunching but damage output is not about magnitude. It is about damage over time. For instance, you're not killing mooks any faster because your increased damage per hit isn't great enough to make any significant difference in killing them and likely wastes damage with overkill. Reducing cooldowns or increasing the duration of powers adds greater versatility in strategy when applied to support powers such as flashbang grenades or stasis or singularity, while indirectly increasing the damage output of powers you now get to use more often such as reave, shockwave and slam.

From a roleplaying point of view the increased paragon/renegade points opens up many conversation options which can lead to more outcomes or even avoiding fights entirely, which is basically infinite dps when you think about it.
