I work at a party supplies store. Halloween is around the corner and we get to wear the store's costumes during our shift. I was Michael Jackson today. I love my job. : )

Currently a full time college student. Chemical Engineering.

My standards of intelligence and feminine beauty have been altered accordingly. XD

You say that EVERY SINGLE TIME you mention your major.

And, kind of related, my sister is going to ba a docter, majoring in some kind of engineering field. And she's pretty smart.

lol. You don't understand. You cannot understand. Nothing else about my major is worth describing.  Not much else can be described in laymen's terms.

Oh, and the joke was standards of intelligence go up, standards of feminine beauty go down. It wasn't some sexist crap. What's she, Biomed?

Mind if I check her out sometime? :P:lol:

I meant you mention that about the females being stupid+attractive every time. I didn't think it was sexist, just sayin'.

And NO, you may not check her out, she's 16.

no, he isn't. I know from what little I've read on him on here. I remember stuff like that really well. I don't know any 15-year-olds who weigh 250 pounds and are like 6''3' or something.

Well I feel like a perve now. You had me thinking she was currently in college in for Biomed engineering. Heck, I feel like a perve when discussing freshmen in college. I must be getting older..  ah off topic.

Um, yeah, not to be a killjoy.. but the attrition rates in engineering are..uh..very high.  I commend such bold planning, but losing 50% of the class in freshmen year is far from unheard of. Hell, it's expected.  Even in a smaller school like mine. You must be smart and have an iron will.  Tell her to go for it, but don't be surprised if things don't work out for one reason or another. If my school is any indication, she won't be really "in" until second semester junior year. That's generally when the attrition stops.

Oh yeah, and tell her to go to town with math courses, and tell her to take at least 1 programming course.  Science too, but secondary to math. (Most people are shocked to hear Chemical Engineering involves shockingly little chemistry. Only a little more than a Chem Minor.)

And if she manages to get the degree and is lonely... rofl. Unlikely. She'll prolly have some trophy husband doing her cooking.  That's what the she-engineers are going for.

She IS a freshman. Like I said, she's smart. She's currently taking Chem (just general Chemsitry) and Calculus 1 along with a Bio class. And I was dubious of her plans as well...but I guess we'll see.

Engineering, even in schools that are known for amazingly high retention rates, is still hitting 60% attrition for basically all types of engineering, and the amount of time it takes for non-doctorate engineering degrees is continuously getting longer.

I took one look at a mechanical engineering seminar, asked a few questions, and pretty much decided that engineering was not my cup of tea. Unless you seriously enjoy what you are doing, engineering is just not for most people.

Pretty easily? Colleges here offer classes to high school students all the time, and, if she managed to advance a class, she could easily be 16 and a full-time (Or as much time as any particular college would allow a sixteen year old.) college student.

We went to a private school that lets you go at your own pace. Kind like they have these textbooks with the info, then the questions, and such. And it's (the school) REALLY small. My sister would have graduated this year, at 17, but the only other kids in the school would have been, at oldest, about 8 years old. So she did NOT want to be stuck wth that and basically did two years of work in one.

Enjoyment is not what drives my major.  Not by a long shot.

I'm honestly only going into science because I feel it will be vaguely interesting. I have no desire to do anything, except perhaps write more songs, create a band, sell some of my books. I know those are horrible jobs, though, so I can't truly justify something like that to myself.

Money? Is it >$100k a year?

If not money, what? Masochism?

Right now, it's $65k out of school, $100k> in 5-10 years. Average midcareer is 110.

My avarice will be the death of me.

And it's not some boring ass overspecialized nonsense. You can do quite a few things with it. You can go to grad school for pretty much anything you want and it comes with some hefty recognition. I mean, granted, most engineers go to research or systems, but there's medical, law, and so forth.  Worst that'll happen is some field will turn you down for being overqualified.  Tough it out, and you can mock the career of the people that drank 5 nights a week.

Ah yes, and masochism:lol:. Many of the engineers simply love to be pissed off, but I wouldn't necessarily say the two are the same thing.

That's actually pretty on-par with my field. Some of the starting positions can be up into the $80k range, but those are harder to get into for obvious reasons.
