No - think of brain-dead patients artificially kept alive to see why unqualified "eternal life" is not what you want.

Effective one would arbitrarily decide that a given level of understanding of the universe is "all there is to know" and stop looking any further - remember when heliocentrism was all there was to know about the universe?

Hang on, what? Please provide some statistics to back that up; otherwise I'll go with common sense and assume that people are not desperate for an alien invasion.

The Reapers are the answer, they are giving us a shortcut to achieving every civilization's ultimate goals.

Well, there Reapers would be the answer if those above assumptions were true AND one completely ignored cost/benefit considerations.
