Can an assassin solo the game? I mean my concern is not having enough thieving points to cover my stealth as well as pick locks and find traps. If that's the case, would a pure thief be a better way to go? Thanks

Any character can solo the game. You won't have anywhere near enough points to get really good at stealth, pick locks and find traps in BG1 - you wouldn't even as a pure thief. However, neither pick locks nor find traps are actually a requirement to complete the game, so you could just put all your points into stealth in order to enjoy yourself

If you are using the BG 2 engine to solo play BG 1, I would also recommend giving your character 9 INT. This way you can use green scrolls - this could be critical for a solo assassin since he can't use fighter potions.

It can be done. A pair of boots can be picked up fairly easily to help with stealth. Shadow armour is even easier, although expensive. The class you choose and your dexterity also affect many of the thieving stats.

Will be a pain at the start.
I always found Fighter/Thief to be superior.

Assassin does get poison, though, which can be applied to darts and daggers and absolutely destroys foes in the early game.

With TuTu, if you drop every point into Traps/Locks, you can just barely reach 100 in both by level 7 (assuming you tome your way up to a 19 dex, and ignoring racial bonuses if non-human).
So getting enough points for the whole bit is clearly out without lifting the level cap.
