I swear one of the most difficult things for me while playing through Mass Effect 2 was Garrus. I loved his personality and felt he would make a great Ll for my fem Shepeard. The only problem was that while his face was interesting it wasn't the type of face I could imagine my fem Shep kissing and enjoying the experience. Krios posed a similar problem though to a far lesser degree. Garrus's personality beat his easily.

Then there was Jacob. Great face but I just could not bring myself to care for him. I can't be sure what it was but something about him annoyed me.

This resulted in a difficult situation. Two guy's with great personalities but physically unattractive and one who was physically appealing but an undesirable personality. It actually resulted in me not being able to pick a Li until I got layer of the shadow broaker and just hooked up with an old flame.

Did anyone else have similar trouble picking a li?

I don't think Garrus could kiss, he has no lips....femShep would need to just get inventive there...:)

They're virtual characters, so I don't really care that much whether "I" find them physically attractive myself. Roleplaying a character who finds x squad mate attractive isn't very hard for me,

Well, could've fooled me.

Garrus is beautiful, you're going to give the guy a complex or something.

I'll also point out there are more ways to show affection than kissing and part of the allure of the physical side of the relationship is the, uh, creatvity that must go into such interactions. There's a lot of trust involved, mentally and physically, and while not everyone finds turians attractive you can't ignore features like eyes and those sexy scars.

Maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea but many a Garrus fangurl (and boy) has gradually come to appreciate the differences in anatomy, so to speak. Just take a look at most fanart, or look at the Archangel lithograph, there are very attractive features in his face alone, if you're really obsessed with such things. However, personality should always trump appearance, in my honest opinion and that's what sets say a LI like Garrus apart (who is targetted more at female fans) than say Tali (targetted more at the males).

Stayed single in ME2, and it fits my idea of how Shepard would act in that situation, so I didn't see any reason to "force" a romance.

Depending on how things play out in ME3, being single in both ME1 & 2 may be my new "canon."

Garrus...not...attractive?
* Pulls out dictionary*
I don't find that in here.
Garrus may not be human, but for us fangirls and boys we over-come the "alien" parts and see the human inside. Same if you look at Tali, or Liara. Liara has blue skin and weird flaps that could rise at any moment. And Tali , you can just see her eyeballs. Everyone over comes it. I have over-comed that Thane looks like a turtle/fish/frog. I see the human in him (cheesy , yes I know.)
All the LI's are good . Well besides "Mr.Taylor". I have no affection or attraction to him.
But there all good choices , when you over come things. But appearnce is not everything, it also matters on personality. Garrus is the type of person who goes with the flow. Thane is the really romantic type. And Jacob..well hes just.. well ask a Jacob fanboy/girl. This may seem stupid to anyone who dosn't think like this , but this is how I think. ^.^. Everyone's opinion's.

Jacob is the only LI who tells to Shepard's face in present tense, that he loves her, he's the only one that asks how she's feeling outside of DLC, he can be difficult to romance becasue his romance path goes beyond: how about we hook up - ok! he can dump Shepard and he can friendzone her. he's an honest, straight forward guy who likes to get stuff done without carrying extra baggage, he doesn't need Shepard to fix him, he's basically a partner for Shepard, an equal.

to me, the only 2 characters that were difficult to match a Shepard to - was Thane (his philosophy and the fact that he's still not over Irykah were.. an obstacle to figure out) and Tali (becasue of the way her romance is structured).

Kissing may cause chafing, but a Turian hug is the ultimate hug.

No kidding! If garrus try to kiss her, he'll probably bite her lips off. But OP you could stick with Kaidan or Liara in ME1 and stay loyal in ME2.;)

Might as well post this again rather than repeat myself.

DrBobcat said...

Although I have an intense attraction to turians, it was not something that came about instantaneously. At first, I thought they just looked interesting and had nice sounding voices. Yet, as I delved deeper into the lore and got to know the characters better, my appreciation took on a different shade. Mere curiosity gave way to genuine admiration. It may sound unusual, I know, but I've never been one for normalcy.

Personality means a great deal more to me than one's physical form. Let's use Garrus as an example. He has all the qualities I look for in a mate. He's intelligent, loyal, passionate and, above all, sincere. Even if it results in great personal suffering, he will refuse to compromise his values. In my eyes, this is incredibly attractive. The fact that he's a turian is no longer relevant. Individuals with such profound integrity are exceedingly rare and I'd consider it a privilege to be with such a person. To answer the OP's question, it was at this point that a physical attraction began to develop.

Unlike most of the respondents in this thread, I would pursue a relationship with a turian if they actually existed. Yes, there would be numerous obstacles. Intercourse would be difficult, if not outright impossible, and reproduction is out of the question entirely. My response, however, is "so what?" Since when are these things prerequisites for love? Yes, I doubt turian and human genitalia are compatible. But why does this matter? Many disabled persons, living in the here and now, lead healthy, fulfilling sex lives despite complications. The similarities between the two should be obvious.

I believe it is unhealthy to become too caught up in conventional ways of thinking. It isn't always as simple as "insert tab A into slot B." Hell, we're talking about a universe with FTL space travel and giant, robotic cuttlefish. Individuals willing to engage in interspecies relationships would find ways to make them work (chirality-friendly
condoms, dental dams, toys, et cetera).

Getting back on topic, I'd like to briefly discuss symbolism. Interspecies relationships are easily visible yet poignant examples of tolerance. More importantly, their presence reminds us that love is (or, at least, can be) universal. Messages like these are, in my opinion, invaluable.

Then again, what do I know? I'm "weird." Posted Image

Yep. I romanced Liara with my femshep because I thought it'd be sexy. But it was just lame. I think she's much happier with Garrus now, the whole Liara thing was just alien fetish.

Besides, his face isn't any more scarred up than hers. =]

Don't worry about it. It seems you prefer a balance of physical attractiveness and personality when you select an LI for your Shepards that's all. It's unfortunate there was no 'middle ground' attractive alien character you could romance in ME2 in the same vein of an asari. Although Thane was designed to fill that role he was certainly more alien-looking than Liara. I certainly wouldn't find a turian of either gender attractive, nothing wrong with that.

Could you roleplay a character that does? Sure. Would you enjoy it? I can't answer that. I do think there's no reason why you should force yourself to do so if you can't. Play the game to have fun.

I had no trouble at all picking a LI who was alien, mainly because I don't seem to have that brain breaking "OMG my immersion is ruined" thing that some people seem to have.

It's just pixels, not a life long decision you have to make. If you don't like roleplaying that way then don't play it that way. So as Athayniel so rightly says - play the game to have fun!

It's not a case of immersion being limited but rather it seems you have a very limited level of immersion. The notion of "It's just pixels" suggest that you have a very limited attachment to your character. I tend to build a rather strong attachment and thus often require numerous play throughs of a game even if it's the same class to get as close to the idea ending as I can imagine for my character.

I also had to restart the game serveral times to get a face I was happy with which made me truly hate the little comic DLC.

What we do to have fun differs from individual. I'm far more interested in developing my character and storyline then shooting.

I agree. Jacob is one of my favorite LIs of ME (but don't tell Kaidan). :D

Well, Shepard could kiss him on the mouth, just because he doesn't have lips doesn't mean she can't kiss him and she could also kiss his neck, that appears softer than his face.
