Hey folks.

With the GOG.com sale I decided to download and install IWD 1 and 2; and have been playing IWD 1.

And I am finding it hard to get into. Why?

Because i cant escape the feeling like its a giant Baldur's Gate mod; and a not very well done Baldur's Gate mod either (you cant move the screen with the arrow keys like you can in BG and you dont have real companions).

Did anyone else feel like this when playing the game?

I find it better than Baldur's Gate in every way. First dungeon is bland and boring, second dungeon is long and arduous, but after that though it becomes quite good. There's even a lot of nice little backstories in the later dungeons.

I hate Icewind Dale 2, though, partly because of 3rd edition rules but especially because of rehashed dungeons from the first game and endless, boring grinding combat.

Both games are also much more challenging than both Baldur's Gates out of the box.

In regards of companions, you might want to try this mod.
Graphical and other tweaks should be available as well, if you search thoroughly enough. (widescreen mod for example works for IWD as well)

Don't get me wrong.

I WILL play it lol. And will probably like it...

I was just surprised how much it felt like a big BG1 mod and how difficult it was making it for me to get "into" the game.

Challenging doesnt worry me tho lol.

Both IWD1 and 2 are combat games. The endless comat bores some people, but i love it (though i love PS:T, which is the exact opposite, too).

I'm not sure if the GoG version includers Trials of the Luremaster. If it doesn't, here it is: http://www.fileplane...-of-the-Luremas
Highly recommended

Sorcerer's Place has a list of the best ID mods. Especially recommended: Auril's Bane (http://home.comcast..../wb/ab_dls.html) and the Ease-of-Use pack.

If you're like me and you feel 3e rules are superior to the boring 2e rules, you might want the pseudo 3e conversion pack, available on the same site as Auril's Bane.

EDIT: forgot to mention that raising the difficulty in IWD will also raise the xp you get from killintg monsters and completing quests. I recommend raising the difficulty to insane once you're a bit comfortable with the game and enabling Heart of Fury mode once you get to level 13 or so. HoF wil raise the difficulty of the game FAR beyond insane mode by greatly improving monsters hitpoints, THACO and damage output. You can accees HoF mode through the config menu.

I'm also a fan, especially with the NPC mod that Taifun linked.

You guys know the moderator is going to lock this down, right? We're not allowed to discuss IWD here.

Moderators don't check the lower sections of the forum, unless somebody notifies them.

I can't understand why this is? I mean, IWD1 and IWD2 was made by some of the same folks that made Neverwinter Nights 2 and there's even a forum for this game right here....

And both IWD1 and IWD2 was made with Bioware's Infinity Engine.....

I guess it might have something to do with some legal thingies...

Yeh this is about IWD; but its not just about IWD.

Its about IWD in relation to BG and the infinity engine; therefore it is on topic and relevant.

lol.

If you can keep it linked to the BG series, I'll leave it open, but if it's just going to discuss IWD then it will get a lockdown. Let's see how it goes.

Admittedly I've only played the opening of IWD1, but it didn't have that "Wow, gotta play some more" feel to it that BG has. Maybe it's due to all NPCs being user-created. I may try that mod linked to above when I have time to play this game properly. Want to get through BG1 and 2 first (with the same character).

I don't want to get all emotional on everyone, but for me the Icewind Dale series has a much nicer 'feel' to it than Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 do. I think it might be a combination of the gorgeous frosty music, new and exciting graphics and the lovely snowy setting. It may also because I've played the Baldur's Gate series to death and have only completed IWD 1 and 2 once each. So it has a sort of nostalgic memory to it, something I'm scared to disturb by playing again.
Baldur's Gate has become it's own worst enemy, the 'medieval' grass, castles, dungeons and forests settings is a little dated, whereas IWD is just nice to look at all the time. My preference for cold weather probably helps too (good job I live in London then isn't it!).

How possible is it to shove BG 1 and 2 NPCs into IWD 1 and 2? So even though they wouldn't comment on quest related subjects, at least they could still interact with the PC and other party members, possibly even romances too. I don't know, I'm no modder so have no idea. Last time I tried to mod, I made a Skie for BG2 mod where I made her spawn in the Copper Coronet, except I did something wrong with the code so she kept spawning. Suppose it adds to her annoying personality, haw haw.

I suppose that not having predefined NPCs is both a good thing and a bad thing.

I mean with NPCs you create yourself you can make up their personality, history, sexuality, appearance, everything really on your own. Their motivations and reactions are entirely controlled by you in your head.
It means that the game is a little lacking in "depth" but doesnt necessarily lack that emotional connection (as jaxbudgie's feelings for IWD 1 proves).

Defined NPCs are great in that it adds "depth" to the game and you can more easily for an emotional connection to the game through its characters and companion NPCs.
But it might well be difficult to find NPCs that you really like.

For example, for me I find it difficult to like pretty much all of the romance options in BG2.

Jaheira is a rude callous **** to my eyes. Her husband has just been brutally murdered and she is all over the Male PC like a rash seriously. I dismissed her from my company (lawful good playthru) immediately after leaving Irenicus' dungeon and I got her crying about how she thought she meant more to me than that.
I was like "wtf you on you mad ****?" lol.

Viconia is worse, much much worse because she isnt just starchy and a bit selfish/callous like Jaheira. No she is an outright evil sod. No redeeming features whatsoever except maybe you could say she is an evil sod who doesnt murder people. Which isnt exactly a ringing endorsement of an NPC.

And Aerie. God what can I say about Aerie...
I saw this...

And thought, those last four "windows" are totally Aerie and my PC. Even on Lawful Good Playthru. She annoys me even more than Viconia and Jaheira. And for the girls Anomen is apparently just as bad as Aerie. Eugh.

Obviously it is a matter of opinion and it varies from person to person; but with player defined NPCs you arent going to have the "eugh I hate this character they annoy me, drop them!" thing happening.

I can't help but agree with that comic. There should have been a Mazzy romance for a lawful good character. She's the only character who keeps her head on her shoulders, so to speak.

I do actually like both Jareira and Viconia, just not for romancing. The Anomen romance is even worse, tbh. I tried the romance once, but he has an utterly repugnant personality and i dropped him.

As for adding NPC's to IWD, for me the problem is that both IWD and IWD2 are combat rpg's and i really want party members with the best possible stats. Meaning i min/max their stats, especially on Heart of Fury mode.. That a character with an intelligence of 3 is not very realistic, doesn't bother me in IWD.

Oh, agreed on Mazzy. Mazzy is adorable. Best good aligned character, imo.

If you still want to have a BG2 romance, try the Nalia mod. It has much less angst in it than the original A/J/V trio, and it resolves some loose ends involving the Roenails.

This is true, it's not a bad mod, the thing that irked me was the music that accompanied her romance dialogues, it was utterly revolting.
Although I managed to replace the song with a much loved and in my opinion more relevant song.

Is the dialogue well-written and how buggy/glitchy is that mod?

Dialogue is pretty good and I've never seen a bug in two runs, using Windows XP.
