Haha! Straight up to a decent level with interesting combat. It's not really cheating since the enemies scale with you, though the gold is sort of I suppose since you're supposed to be saving gold through Act 1.

sigh...ah well. i didnt care much to level up so fast, but the extra gold was fun! I play on ps3, I have no idea how it even gets patched and updated..lol!
I'm pretty sure the item duplication glitch is still intact, so you could still use that to get gold.

I never attempted to exploit my way through DAO for my first 6 playthroughs, but after I looked online and found ways to get all the fun toys and see how the game played out.
Although, if you have all the DA2 DLC, the money issue I had when I made my first playthrough, (while I was swearing that my Hawke and Shepard from ME2 would both understand eachothers pain) is pretty much gone after Legacy. Between that and the Exiled Prince, you pretty much can have enough gold to buy the good stuff.

I did look to see if the item duplication glitch was still around, but at least with da2 that seems to be patched. It doesn't seem to be listed in any of the patches, but it might well be one of the "minor gameplay issues" referenced to in the list of patch fixes.
BTW-worth checking if anyone ever updated the wikia entries will all changes listed, especially with mage.

I haven't tried the glitch on my 360 but I just came here to say that pain of earning Gold is real in this game. I think the most Gold I have had a time is 100? I do buy potions and grenades a lot- and runes to upgrade all armor/weapons. Every play through I do every single possible thing- and still haven't been able to buy some of the really cool items from Black Emporium or the Magus at the Wounded Coast. Basically: the struggle is real if you're just middle class in Kirkwall, fight huge gangs every day and have to fund your entire entourage like McHammer. :\
