...at the risk of starting a war, I apologise in advance, but the game is built to run smoothly on an XBox 360, a system which is now several years old. I really can't imagine any system built in the last few years with at least a bit of performance grunt struggling to run the game at anything below 1920x1080. With that said, high AA can still be a killer for some cards.

Incoming plug.

BioWare makes games for the people after all.

Yes, my computer is 2 years old, but I haven't found anything I can't run at a decent speed and high res unless I put on AA.  AA kills me.

Because Microsoft Made DX10 exclusive to Vista, the majority of gamers still using XP made it so that it wasn't sensible for developers to use DX10 when the majority of gamers wouldn't be able to use it.

Until Vista/W7 becomes the majority in terms of OS usage, DX9 will still be the dominant API used by developers. You would likely get some games that uses DX10 and/or DX11 features, but the game would still be developed with DX9 as the primary API.

DX11 won't be heavily supported either, since a TON of people have DX10 cards (Radeon 2000 series+, and Geforce 8000 series+). So DX10 would be more heavily supported far before DX11 is. DX11 probably won't see any kind of substantial use until 2-3 years from now, and probably wouldn't become the standard until around 5 years from now.

It's OK Mr.BumbleHead.  Cooks are more popular than computer programmers :P

Yes, there is an option to disable persistent gore.

Could you explain persistent gore?  Is that just what is on the clothes?  I personally don't need to see 15 gallons of blood come out of a rat.  This is a RPG, not SAW :)

Overtaken as in no longer supported? Probably 2-5 years. Probably closer to 4 years or so. Right now XP has about 68% of the OS usage, and Vista + W7 has around 23%, although that probably isn't very accurate since those numbers are through september 2009, and seeing as how W7 was just released, Vista + W7 might have 24% :P

It takes years for a dominant OS to be phased out, so I would say 4-5 years is when DX9 might no longer be supported. Tough to say really.

Yes. Assuming you meet the recommended specs in the other areas, or close to it, you shouldn't have a problem maxing out the game.

I also believe it has to do with the amount (or lack thereof) of exclusive games between the three platforms.  More and more games are coming out on all three platforms, so coupled with the dominance of XP, it probably isn't to viable for companies to make games that support the latest API when it's easier to stick with the mature one that all the platforms support.
It's may slow down development of graphics engines in games, but is better for the consumers in the long run as more people can play new games. DA:O being a great example of a new game running well on older systems.

It would be funny if true. I just built a new comp(955BE, GTX275, 4GB ram) for this game and of course future gaming...but the comp it replaced was spec'ed very similar to the thread starters, even the resolution he tested in :(

I knew this would happen, but I have a new comp anyway :)

Look on the bright side. When the sequel to DA:O comes out in 2-3 years YOU can be the thread starter. :P

I'm fairly certain "persistent gore" is just the blood that stays on your armor/clothes after a battle. Once the fight is over you'll be sparkley clean if you have it turned off.

That isn't a very good description of your processor since AMD has multiple types of dual core processors. I would say High settings, probably max, depends on which AMD dual core you have. If it is Athlon 2 or Phenom 2 X2 then yes, max. If it is an Athlon 64 X2 then High, maybe max, tough to say on that one.

Interesting, just loaded up the Character Creator with FRAPS running, just to see where I stand. I was pleasantly suprised, running at 1440x900 w/ all settings maxed (including 8xAA) I was pulling about 90 fps on average and that's doing facial detail and rotating the model a lot.

Not bad, considering I was thinking my CPU was going to be a bottleneck (Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC'd to 2.8GHz). Nice to know my 8800GTX can still pick up the slack that my lack of cache on the CPU leaves.

I figure that even with a 50-60% drop in frames in heavy action or cutscenes I'd still be sitting at or over 30fps, which I'm more than happy with at max settings. Of course, the CC isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison with the full game, I'm sure.

My full specs if anyone was interested:

Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate

Athlon 64X2 4600+ OC'd to 2.8GHz

2GB PC6400 (800MHz) DDR2 RAM

EVGA 8800GTX 768MB edition (original launch GTX)

Samsun SyncMaster 940bw monitor, native res 1440x900

I do plan on picking up another 2GB of RAM in the next month or so, but it'll be after the first of the year before I could upgrade my mobo and CPU combo.

Your CPU (and the rest) will be fine, but how the CC runs will tell you nothing about the severity of any bottlenecking - nothing too CPU intensive is going on.

True enough. But I doubt that even in the really intense battles scenes the performance would be a 75% or higher drop in frames compared to the CC, unless a lot of magic was being thrown around and PhysX and particle effects were flying everywhere.

But I'll just have to wait for Tuesday morning to find out.

Since you seem to already have the game, how does the free item thing work? ( Dragon Armor, Ring of Dalish, etc..)

Do you enter codes and your characters automatically get them? Are they found? You purchase them for free?

Is it all characters or just one?

I have a decent laptop. It's a macbook pro from late 2007, 2.4 intel core 2 duo, 4gb ram, but the graphics card is a geforce 8600m Gt 256? :(

good enough for most games, but not so sure about this.

And before anyone brings up the mac thing, I have a windows partition and mac provides all the drivers specific to their products so I use Mac for life and Windows for Games.

I figured PS3 was probably the better route?

@pansyrocker Based on what the Developers have said the 8600m should run the game on medium to low settings. I've a similar laptop so will be interested in seeing how it runs on it.
