Thought you guys would appreciate this heads up, I placed the Bloodline War Axe in there which for me was originally 5th tier, came back later noticed it had become Dragonbone (7th tier). Sure enough, it did the same for my Warden Commander's Boots, which went from Silverite to Dragonbone. I know certain equipment can be upgraded this way by selling it to a Merchant and buying it back, but it appears this chest does it for free (well not really, I guess you pay for the DLC...).

Just be careful to save before doing it, on the old forums, I remember someone saying one of their items got downgraded. I guess it may depend on your level? Else that person might have been mistaken/drunk/high. Save before doing this, just in case.

Put it in the box, come back after completing some main quests or getting higher leveled, then come back, it should be higher tier.

I think you just need to zone.

Seems like a bug, not a feature.

It's a bug that highlights the idiocy of item scaling. Just because my charcater is a higher lvl doesnt mean that the items in world are all suddenly made of dragonbones. This is a trend in recent RPG's and it is really annoying. It cuts down on the immersion factor, realism, and impacts the value of finding some rare item.

Agreed on all fronts. Sadly, it's apparently a lot easier to program this way, and devs love nothing better than taking shortcuts.

from my personal testing only bloodline i found do scale, and ofcourse the warden commander armor set, everything else just stay where they were, not really game breaking is it.

I didn't notice it with the warden's keep chest (I have the mod that puts a chest in the camp) but I noticed it with merchants.

What they stock is fixed and they keep everything you sell them... but if you come back later every thing you've sold them is scaled to your level.

I would guess that goes with the items that scale with your level. Warden Commander armor changes depending on when you did the quest.

I always wonder if this works with Bella too, and always forget to test it... does someone know?

That's cool to know about the chest. I've been holding out on upgrading my Warden armor, due to expense of buying it back from the merchant.

I guess if you leave items in the cheat, the kindly merchant upgrades it whilst you're away for free? Well, we did clear out the keep for them, and they appear to have their entire family moved in there, and I can't get back, so I guess it's fair.

Just tried this out, put a load of stuff in the chest that has been reported to upgrade. I went off to different places, even spent some unused spec + talent points. Came back and nothing has changed in the chest.

The chest "trick" definitely works. Probably upgraded my Warden armor 3 times now. Also my Templar helm which was Steel got upgraded to Silverite as well last I looked.

That's actually a good money-maker on some of the items that scales, that you might want to sell then. Upgrade it for free first and sell for maximum reward. (Granted it doesn't work on all items, but on some items you can get a better profit.)

This is an excellent thing, not much fun gear later on and all the good looking stuff near the end is worn out. So love it!.

Tho it dosnt seem to work for Sten's 2h sword. =(

Basically, an item you place in the chest (although not all--but those that has 'scaling possibilities') will after you zone out (go visit your camp and head back again) have a chance to have changed tiers. As much as I've seen from what can be upgraded, by a little trial and error with selling to the the smith Mikhail at the Warden's Keep , not all equipment will change tiers, and some don't switch up to tier 7, but might be capped at tier 6 (or perhaps lower). Every time you zone, it might supposedly have had a chance to change the tiers up or down though, so once you reach the tier you want to wear on someone, you should take it out of the chest and into your inventory, then repeat the process with any additional items you might have to upgrade. It can take some time, but for maximizing gear potential, I think it'd be worth it. The thing is, I can't really confirm that this actually works, but plenty of people seem to write that it does around the internet.

Generally it seems most non-unique items (those that only give a set bonus of Defense when you examine them and that are random drops/chest loots) can go all the way to tier 7 and the same goes for the more normal common weapons. A good thing about that is that alot of weapons that reaches higher tiers, seems to add enchantment slots, making them even a bit more useful (although I would prefer proper unique Tier 6 weapons as they tend to be better).. and if you don't to use them, you get more money when you sell them (granted the chest trick actually works, wich like I wrote, I can't really confirm or deny) :-D --personally, by trying to do as people have written, my items do not change tiers though in the Party Storage Chest, but will do so by selling to Mikhail at least, after closing the UI and opening it again to re-purchase, but that gets a bit expensive in the larger picture.

From selling to Mikhail so that I could experiment on what would scale, on the top of my head, I can remember that the following upgraded to Tier 7 (except Asturian's Might wich is maxed at Silverite):
Asturian's Might (Silverite is max), Barbarian Helmet, Warden Commander's set pieces, Bloodline axe, Antique Warden Crossbow, Thane's Helmet, Templar Helm (Note: Templar Armor does not upgrade), Chevalier's set pieces (only had gloves to test with, but assume full set) and Fade Striders.

PS: Those that are reporting it as working, do you play on the PC? Do you have any mods installed? Patch applied? What level is your character? When just testing it out myself, it didn't scale anything, but I run the game without any kind of mods and on the PC, plus it's patched--character was Lv.20 and had done all major plot quests except Redcliffe. I have like 600G (since I haven't really bought anything from the start), so it's not a big deal to upgrade certain items I want to use through the vendor trick, but it'd be nice to have it for free too, hehe.
