I agree with you that it was probably the latent anger that did the warping.

But even in DA2 during "Prime Suspect" you are chasing down the murderer and you come across Gascard DuPruis and you can ask, "why don't you take this to the city guards?" And he replies that he wants revenge not justice.

Aveline also states close to the end that she wants to see "The laws of the land. Fairly applied to everyone." And Anders replies "That...is actually something I'd very much like to see." Hence, it is actual justice instead of vengeance.

Laws may or may not involve a sense of vengeance. And people may or may not feel satisfied with the outcome of a case. But having "your day in court" to contest something is supposed to bring justice and an end to the matter. Vengeance can lead to blood feuds like the Hatfields and the McCoys. It is also seen in Greek Mythology where the Furies were hunting a man for killing someone else and he made the argument that such actions have no ending.

But if justice and vengeance weren't tightly tied it would not have worked in the game and we wouldn't be trying to hash out the fine details here. ;) I like some of your points, and I like some of mine. Go check out my "Anders-why it stings so much" thread. I will be quite interested in your viewpoint.

Oh... I agree that we are nitpicking on details here. But I would like to point out that Gasgard is luying through his teeths. I persnally think it is a failing to the english langue - I my country the words for law and the words for jsutice is not so thighthly tied - We do have an opnion that laws have to be 'fair' and  all equal to all, but laws are not seen as justice or part a justice system as it seems to be in the english langue (at least if I should judge from the films)

But too not be too lingqustic: when the law punish we are talking about vengance (in my opinion), but it is is a soclialized venangce taken out of the hand of the common man and yes it has an apspcet of justice because if society doesn't bring closure we risk blood feuds were reletives indeed are injusticly killed. The punishement are vengance, but the closure are justice.

And as I have already said that Thedas is an eye for an eye society (and Aveline is the most curropt guards captain ever met), and the spirit Justice has always been the Spirit Vengance as well. Basically you can't judge what Justice thinks is justice, because he already in Awakening acts more like vengance and Anders says himself on friendship part the the two concepts are too closely tied with one another for him to see the difference. That Aveline and Anders comment shows that Anders sees equailty as justice which I would agree with him. We are not talking about the mages being equal to the law as everyone else - something the so far have not been, we are not talking about the law being justice. (Espically not Thedaian law which seems to vary a lot of your social status. In fact I would go so far as to say that the Thedian law is unjust - and not just to mages).
