Bethesda consuming them would be a death knell.

Yeah, Bethesda would definitely just chop them up to where they won't stand out.

Why do you think that would happen?

So far Bethesda seems to allow the devs it has acquired to do their own thing for the most part, financing games like DOOM 4, RAGE and Dishonored from id and Arkane.

At least they seem to provide a better environment for talent compared with larger publishers like Activision, EA, etc.

I think it would be a great fit.

Not me. I agree with your assessment of Bethesda, and they're probably the best publisher Obsidian ever had, but no publisher seems like a 'good fit', simply because I think one of their strength is their ability to work on so many different licenced IPs, and that would be greatly reduced if they stopped being independant. Granted, I also want them to do their own thing, but I like their licenced stuff a lot!

Alpha Protocol was really good considering I paid 2 euros for it...

It was an enjoyable experience. I don't think it deserved all the flak it took... though the final mission sucked.

I think the problem with the final mission is that it was too open and too confining all at once.

And they're making a 2D RPG with it I believe. I hope they move in the direction of making lots of high quality 2D or not over the top 3D RPGs. The less money and time they have to spend on graphics and cinematography, the better.

Is there a market for 2D games these days beyond the indie market?

Nevermind, misread.

But yes, I think there is. I don't think people really care if it's 2D as long as it's well designed and interesting.

If the game plays/features a story like Fallout... the originals, I don't really care what the graphics look like. I know Obsidian can pull together more funds than the indie market, though, so you can probably at least expect something with rich textures and graphics. I know Dungeon Siege: III looks amazing in the graphics/art department. If they continue to work with the Onyx Engine (mainly upgrading customization/skills/difficult/party size) and get a good I.P. (Dungeon Siege doesn't not fit with Obsidian because it lacks a really good setting), I think Obsidian can pull off one of their best games yet (maybe even better than Fallout: New Vegas). Obsidian needs a game like Dragon Age, though, a medieval, dark fantasy setting. Hell, I wouldn't mind seeing a Fallout game on the Onyx Engine--that would be more towards how the original games were handled--instead of the whole FPS thing. Anyways, Obsidian should work more with the Onyx Engine it is beautiful, but it needs a lot of tweaking in the gameplay department. Maybe allow us to go back to the old school ways of having six party members (in the case of Fallout, even more).

IMO Chris's tweet suggests they might be in the process of getting acquired by a larger company. That would provide them with financing to work on developing their own IP and engine, which can be quite expensive.

Oh boy, this is bad:

"@NoBullet Obsidian doesn't have rights to AP, SEGA does, and a sequel is unlikely with any other publisher. :("

I thought the reverse was true, based on what Fergus Urquhart has said in the past.

(I'm sorry the original post was contributed by my four year old daughter when I left my laptop unattended)

Alpha Protocol was great fun, but I never felt compelled to replay it.
