I named mine Magnus Stonecrotch. He's a fighter.
Haha.
Although not as hilarious as Magnus Stonecrotch, I usually cycle through a series of names; Nathaniel, Douglas, Samson, Serge, Jax, Greyfell, Evelyn, Artemis and I forget the rest.

Gnome F/T - Remo - Tasslehoff Burrfoot's uncle
Paladin - Tanin - Cameron (sp?) and Tika's son
various - Levendis - from Harlan Ellison's "The Man Who Rowed Christopher Columbus Ashore"
Half-Elven R/C - Gilthas - Tanis' son
Gnome F/Illuisionist - Gabbroglimmer - based on a 3e PnP char of mine, Fubarnacky Indarglimmer Galmmercloak
Edit:
Almost forgot one of my favs...
Human Beserker/Cleric of Lathander - Micah - The name means "He who is like God", an ironic twist for the protaginist's background. What made this character interesting is how his class choice fit in with the story. He was a (Chaotic Good) fighter for BG1, but the trauma upon learning of his violent past (trying to keep this spoiler-free), he goes the opposite route and becomes a cleric of Lathander. Sure he still fights, but he strives for the most peaceful, humane solution to his problems. And yeah, I had to use SK to do a double kit.

The only thing I don't remember is if you have to switch your kit back to berserker before you level up to get your abilities back.

My current character is named after this guy from an old 90's Middle-Earth CCG, which I happened to spend a lot of the summer playing. He's contributed to winning me many a game, so I thought he might do well in the Realms, as well.

Cool name my parents almost named me, it means "happy" but it sounds super badass IMO... now I use it on all characters in video games haha. I really like it.
And "Magnus Stonecrotch"... that's great

In Nepali (And probably Hindi) Asha means hope. A lot of christians here have that name, but Hindus also use it.
My current character, a Cavalier, is called Holy Avenger. A previous character with low charisma was called Lo Ruhama, Hebrew for "Not loved".
I tend to have a different name in every game.

My names are random (and new every game) - that is, they don't mean anything in particular, and I try not to use modern names, nor very well known names (such as Drizzt), but just make up new characters.
My method is exactly the same as corey's: new names for each character, that I made up and probable don't exist yet. Currently I'm playing with these characters: Ohrlinka (a gnome female), Kheltick (male bard), Faihra (female half-elven), Bowrain (human male), Ognaer Doomblade (half-orc Hexblade), Amniralda (a female Druid).
Only exception to the rule is Miranda, a gypsy, who has a common Dutch name (I can't remember why I did that, maybe it started as a bit of a joke: dolly-ish voiceset, lots of evil npc's in party, charming enemies with gypsy song - a totally different approach to the serious 'I want to bettter the world', which i normally do IRL and in games).

Perhaps I shouldn't say US, since I'm descended from the invaders.

start -> programs -> accessories -> system tools -> character map
the special character you want will have [alt + xxxx] under it on the bottom right. hold down alt, enter the numbers on the number pad and release alt. your character should appear.
alternately, you can copy and paste the name from character map directly to bg2. hit the 'copy' button once you are satisfied with the name. then, once in bg, use [shift] + [insert]. this is the alternative to ctrl+v. for some reason, bg2 doesn't let you ctrl+v. these names will show up erroneously in sk, but will keep the name. these names will get changed by nearinfinity.
for the example above, i use the character "†". it's very easy to recognize if someone is addressing you. it keeps the dialog short. i don't want to scroll two pages if my name is "he who must not be named but usually gets killed" and the npc calls me by name twice.
