How much of an advantage do they give? I'm new to the Baldur's Gate series and am currently finishing up chapter 5 in the first game. I plan on playing the expansion and eventually importing my character to the second.

I've read that the reason tomes weren't put into the second game was because they ended up being game breaking. Will using the stat tomes give me TOO noticeable an advantage in both games? I don't want to breeze through the end of this game and through the second game.

Or is the difference not very noticeable?

I'm playing as a half-elf Fighter if that makes any difference at all.

Thanks!

That depends. A mage with proper starting stats doesn't really need any stat improvement. A fighter will likely at some point begin to use Strength setting items, so his natural strength score (and any used tomes) will be completely disregarded from then on. A thief would be able to improve their thieving skills by improving his dexterity (and also, less importantly, their ranged THAC0). (AC is another possible advantage from a +1 in dexterity)
In this light, the tomes are rather minor improvements.
But.
Clerics can really benefit from 3 Wisdom tomes. Done properly, you can get a really high natural score in Wisdom towards the end of the game (23 without any problems).
A metagamed fighter could improve his strength in such a manner that he would never need any strength enhancing items (and, using Tutu or BGT, actually hit the cap with his natural score).
Dualclassing can also be made a lot easier if you take the tomes into account. (that's not to say that if you want to dual from fighter to thief you should start with str 14 and dex 16 - both scores should optimally be 18 - but you can push these two stats and still have some points left over for other attributes)
Don't worry about making the game too easy. The effects are not that big. And anyway, since this is your first time playing Baldur's Gate (after lots of modern games, I guess), you may soon wish the game was less difficult.

BG2 does have tomes. They are called the Lum-lum machine. Same functionality just in one place. Tomes are really cool. The str tome allows to bypass the 18/00-18/100 route straight to 19, which is quite a leap in power. Con 20+ gives regeneration, an imported dwarf will have it. Dexterity negates the penalties endured during game play. Int/Cha could be absolutely awesome, but are pointless the way they are implemented. Unlike wisdom. That triple wisdom tome is really great. I metagame it to Viconia in BG2. That having said none of that really makes a difference. Although it allows a more liberal item distribution among the party.
