Force mages control the battlefield by "corralling" enemies all together either as a means of crowd control, or so you can then cast a spell like firestorm or tempest on the helpless victims.

They also have spells which send enemies away, somewhat like a glyph of repulsion.

I'm sure others can explain the spec better, as I have yet to play a mage Hawke, though that is up next. I have tinkered with the spec a little by bringing Bethany along for Legacy post-campaign, and I do plan to use force mage for my future mage Hawke as others with more experience seem to like it.

Dear lord, Force mage is essential imo. They control the battlefield.

Gravatic slug and pull of the abyss alone make the Force mage spec a terrific tree.

I love the force mage tree, and use it every time I play as a mage. Once you've gotten a few points spent in the specialization, the skills available are pretty useful. I like to use combos - first Pull of the Abyss, then Telekenetic burst, to pull enemies into a pile, then send them all flying. Good times. I rarely ever use Fist of the Maker, though. It doesn't quite have the impact I'd like.

Gravitic Ring is worth the specialization point all on its own. When enemies are slowed to a crawl, it makes life easier for everyone in the party. 'Course, don't know if the spell affects allies in nightmare mode, so you might want to double-check.

Also, Telekinetic Burst is very useful for those waves of bandits/darkspawn/corpses that spring up behind your party and kill your mages. Drop one of them in front of them and you'll have time to move your mages to safer ground.

I agree with everything you said in this post...Except one thing; the word "Essential".  I know that's your opinion but in MY opinion, no particular tree is "essential" over the other.  Now, everything else you said after that inital sentence, totally agree with.  PotA has so many practical applications that it's not even funny heh.

Fist of the Maker....Impact...Nicely done whether the pun was intentional or not lol :wizard:

You know, it actually wasn't intentional; but you're right, it was pretty good.

I usually use Pull of the Abyss followed by Walking Bomb on the weakest then Fist of the Maker, If that doesn't set off Walking Bomb then I use Spirit Bolt. I had about 12 enemies go down to 2 like that once. Made me feel proud about myself.

I never thought about using Walking Bomb after Pull of the Abyss; that's brilliant!

Take a look,
Pull of the abyss gathers the mobs, gravitic ring slows their movement speed, then aoe nuke the area.

Clearly I need to work a little more on my mage builds. That one was bad-ass.

Force mage is bad if you expect them to kill things. They are great for re-arranging thing in order to kill them.

Plus, the spell effect animations are just fun to watch. :)

That's one of my favorite things to do.  PotA, GR, then Apocalyptic Firestorm.  With the new mage pack gear that essentially equals death for a group of mobs unfortunate enough to be in the radius lol

I think the Force Mage + Spirit Healer is pretty good combination. As you can used all of the Force Mage spells while Healing Aura is active, except the Fist of the Maker.

Also, the other two specializations Spirit Healer and Blood Mage are pretty much mutually exclusive.

The only thing I don't like about the tree is that the spells can be fairly mana-intensive. But if you've built your mage with a deep enough mana pool, you can still get off a bunch of spells before you run out of steam.

Plus, when you're walking around Kirkwall at low levels, FotM+Fireball is probably your first big AoE combo.

This, if nothing else!

I miss the heck out of my pure AoE mage from DAO, but Force Mage was a fun substitute.

There's also the passive ability that gives a mage +50 to fortitude, which means they won't be knocked back so much.

Force Mages are indeed essential. The sad thing is that I wish I could be a Force Mage/Spirit Healer/Blood Mage, but I can only pick two. So I always go with FM and BM.

Yep, force mage is the best mage controller bar none. Plus you get unshakeable.

You know there are times I think those Force Mage skills would come in handy in real life.:lol:

now let me give u this scenario: pull of the abyss then gravity ring on top  then upgraded winters grasp(meaning it brittles most of them),and finally walking bomb and to top it off varrick with his archers lance

you can aslo add some (apocalyptic) firestorm if youre an elemental mage and a hail of arrows if u have it on varrick

dont even bother to calc the damage

Yeah, the force mage tree itself is designed solely for control. If you want damage then you need to invest in other base talent trees for dps.  It makes killing small waves of enemies easy as hell and the passive fortitude bonus is excellent against bosses.

I almost felt bad for the Arishok in our duel with my force mage. I basically made his rush attack useless and had him stuck in the corner while I blasted away.

Plus it has some great repels/pulls to either keep them off your squishier allies or to pull them into your AoE spells.

That said you'll need a decent mana pool or some lyrium potions/mana boosting gear to really make it effective. It can be a pain if you're playing on a mode with friendly fire. It really stinks seeing your allies trying to walk through your gravity ring while you facepalm in the back.

I like to use Fist of the Maker on a group of enemies to stun them and then follow that with Chain Lightning.
