The first review gives it a 9.5/10

I had a quick skim over the review, Looks like an impressive game. One thing caught my eye though. "no multiplayer" *rolls eyes* Seriously does every game now have to have multiplayer or social rankings? Really, isn't enough to have a well designed and executed game with a good storyline without elements of CoD or BF3 creeping into it, if I want to play multiplayer I would go and play those games.

The funny thing is it actually does have multiplayer but not deathmatch, it's got racing and co-op missions.

So long as the multiplayer or co op fits in with the game, thats fine, it actually adds something to the game. I dislike the desire of games to put in multiplayer FPS aspects for no particular reason, especially when it seems more shoe horned in rather than being conducive to the actual gameplay, particularly if it is badly done.

Let me know how to rpg (including minigames, collectibles, story, codex entry type of things, ect) elements pan out to be. I am afraid after dropping 65.84 on a 2 hour game.

EDIT

I don't know if GT is a "bad" review site, but they review games with a good template format that I like, and I never had trouble with em before. Anyway, the big point here is that the rpg elemtns are surprising. Check out the review. Again, let me know what yall think who have played the game though.

here are a few more reviews:
EGM (9.5/10): “Rage is one hell of an experience.”
TeamXbox (9.5/10): “Simply put, it’s a blast to play.”
GameTrailers (9.0/10): “RAGE is not what you expect, but exactly what you didn’t know you wanted.”
Game Informer (9.0): “Id’s return is worth the wait and stands out in the crowded FPS market.”
IGN (8.5, Editor’s Choice): “One of the best looking games ever made.”
AusGamers (9/10): RAGE is a triumph for id Software”
Gaming Chronicles (10/10): “Rage looks like a launch title for whatever system Xbox is planning for us next.”
Gaming Trend (95/100): “Rage is just that damned good.”
Machinima (9.0/10): “Rage represents the team at id stepping out of a 20-year long comfort zone and (gracefully) stepping into the modern era. It’s been a long time coming and I think I can speak on behalf of gaming when I say they are most welcome.”

I played about 4 hours or so yesterday.

I probably completed about 10-15% of the game, as I only did the first couple of quests and I didn't even get the dunebuggy yet.

It is actually an open world environment. If you are persistent, you can climb up on mountains and even find a way to drive the ATV up on top of mountains and weird places.

However, it's a relatively small open world, at least until you open up the path to Wellspring. I haven't done that part yet. I think all the gambling mini-games are in Wellspring (dice games, something called "finger fillet," and some sort of complex card game that looks like it has rules similar to Pokemon or MAGIC the gathering).

The sewers are really short levels that respawn and the textures are so incredible it's like a modder's dream for Fallout 3. The textures stream from a "megatexture" file, so if you turn around quickly or move in very close to a surface, the textures become blurry for a second. from about 5 feet out to an incredibly far distance they look pretty amazing, better than any other game I've played on my laptop at 1920x1080.

The other levels seem to respawn only if you get a quest to return to the same area. The Bandit Hideouts are all gorgeously designed, really breathtaking when viewed on my HD projector. It's a stunningly beautiful apocalypse. If you look up at the sky or at some distance vista through a broken windowpane, it is unlike anything I've ever seen on my laptop before.

Loosum is smoking hot, but so far she only says the same dialogue, inviting me to practice wingsticks. I hope more dialogue options get unlocked later. Really amazing character design work.

There are two settlements I've encountered so far, Dan Hagar's gas station village and the Outrigger settlement. You can talk to various NPCs and they give you quests and rewards, like crafting recipes to make bandages, or better weapons, etc. It's pretty simple but the environment is breathtakingly detailed and all the of the NPCs are well designed. There are a lot of doors that you can't open. I think they can be opened during later quests, but I'm not sure.

I know that there are a lot of different crafting recipes in the game and later on it will be possible to craft different kinds of robots, armor upgrades, ammo, radio controlled miniature car bombs, etc.

Hopefully some mods will expand the RPG elements in this game. It would be like a dream version of the Fallout world in terms of the graphics.

The sound design is phenomenal, as well as the orchestral score.

I also experienced some tech issues:

1. I experienced CTD on startup about 20 times and could not play the game initially. After installing the AMD RAGE hotfix catalyst driver released yesterday, I was able to run the game.

2. occasionally I would experience some strange artifacting. It looks a little bit like this image but certainly not so severe as what that person is experiencing. I only noticed this in a couple of locations.

After reading various forms I'll wait until iD makes a real effort to fix the PC version. Such a shame. iD used to be a cutting edge developer before Doom III.

Hmm...so the supposed co-op is actually just co-op missions? That's disappointing; I was hoping for co-op campaign.

Yes, I tried the jail mission co-op with a friend for a little while just to see if it was working. It seemed like a lot of fun.

The environment in this game would be perfect for true multiplayer deathmatches or capture points, etc., I hope it's something that can be added with DLC or mods at some point.

Frankly Naughty some reviews have said other then driving with reckless abandon in the buggy the open world isn't very inspired.

Perhaps they had some unrealistic expectations that the game was going to be an RPG?

It's certainly not an RPG, although it does have a lot more RPG elements than I was expecting. And the world is "open" in the sense that you can go where you want, but it is a very small world.

The only areas that seem to respawn consistently are the sewers. You can go into any of them at any time and they are always full of mutants.

The other areas only seem to respawn when you get a quest. However, you can enter them even if you haven't gotten any quests for that area yet. In my case I found only a couple of bandits when I entered one of the hideouts before receiving any quests to go there. Later after I got the quest for that location, I went back and it was full of enemies.

Also, I've only played the first few quests, so I have to reserve final judgement until I finish the game. I haven't even received the buggy yet :D

Hmm...I think I'm back to being more excited about Dark Souls, and might just get that today instead of getting both. The co-op thing kinda blows it for me.

I was thinking of picking up dark souls as well, but the game just seems...lazy to me. One of the devs said there are points in the game where you will lose a lot of progress if you die, and you WILL die.

Now, I do like challenges, every game I play first I play on the hardest difficulty, but this game seems tiresome and not worth my 65.84. Maybe when it becomes 20 bucks, and I don't really like how they do not play up the coop, and say the game is better without a true coop experience, IE inviting buddies to my game...uh, look, any game, ANY game, if FUN with friends, especially close friends. I am currenty playing dead island with my three closests friends, I knew since elemtnary school (Im 22 now), and we are having I'm a freaking blast.

Like I said, the game just looks lazy to me, since the devs admit there is no real story. Kinda disappointed, japanese companies are known for stories. Oh well.

Speaking of RAGE, is it highly modable like oblivion/skyrim?

Edit

Thanks for responding naughty, and just in case, I am not attackign anyone with my rant on dark souls, just my personal opinion.

the mod tool will be very powerful, but it will not be as easy to use as the Construction Set for Oblivion. I'm guessing there will probably be some bigger mods and a lot less smaller mods.

I have no idea how modding will work with the megatexture file.

Also, since the game does not use DirectX, but rather, OpenGL, I imagine this might make the modding process more complex.

I hope some of the crews who made those awesome mods for oblivion will make em for this game, you know, get some practice in for skyrim....uh, I know its a diff engine and stuff...but yeah, you know, get warmed up or whatever.

Well, that's disappointing. For some reason the game comes off as trying to be like Borderlands and Fallout 3. Especially with the buggy exploration minus the openess for co-op campaign. I have never cared too much for closed in only missions. Now and then it's ok, but strictly that the whole game? Eh.

Thanks for the heads up!

I actually already have that, and love it. My husband and I both bought a copy so we could play multiplayer together on 360.

Also, I did relent and bought RAGE and Dark Souls today. I can't play either of them for a few hours (I'm still at work!), but I'll flip a coin and try one when I get home.

I don't have high expectations for RAGE, but I played Demon's Souls, and I know what dying often is like. In fact, on the back of the box for Dark Souls, it reads:

From the makers of Demon's Souls
PREPARE TO DIE

Thanks, Co-op, when it's integrated well can be rather good, but if it's only on isolated missions, I'll have to see. Although the single player campaign still looks good.

Let me know if you can directly inivte your husband to your game or what not, the game would not be so bad if I knew I can consistnly play with my buddy(s). As long as they have my back, then yeah, it can be a great challenge going into it together

Are you talking about Dark Souls or RAGE? I only got the one copy, but if I like it, we'll get a second, and I will post something back here to let you know how it works. I'm crossing my fingers that that is how it works; having random people join or invade your game (like in Demon's Souls, and I'm assuming Dark Souls)  is a little unnerving.

Dark souls, yeah. I heard somewhre if you can invite whoever is in your xbox live party, but can not find any hard evidence of this. Let me know when you find out, and thanks.

Sure, no problem. You'd think that if someone is in your party, they'd automatically join your game, but yeah, I don't know that for sure yet in this case.

That is exactly what I was thinking of when I heard clips of the storyline and some of the world in the review. Doesn't look too good in my opinion. I know for sure that I will buy Darks Souls (if I have to buy a game this year--out of boredom) instead of Rage.
