I was so hyped by this game and now I dont know if to buy it.
I'm on a PC: Phenom II X4 970 64bit Win7 GeForce GTX 460, 8GB RAM...

So will I have the texture and tearing problems? Crashes? Will I be able to update/patch/fix the game somehow?

I am considering torrenting the game to check how it runs (but the 18GB of d/l...scares...me...)... or if it runs at all. If it behaves the way they show on YT I think I'll pass the "latest IDs wonder".

So I need an opinion, is the game broken and deserves the 3.3 on metacritic?
Can the problems be fixed without much hassle? In other words is it worth buying or should I just skip it, forget and swollow the bitter taste of dissapointement?

Much obliged.

First I would recommend editing your post to avoid getting banned from this forum.

Second, the game is lots of fun and the dev team worked really hard on this thing for six years.

Third, why not just wait a couple weeks and buy the game after the 64-bit executable is released.

There are some issues and in particular, people on a dual core with AMD GPU have had a lot of issues. In my case I'm using laptop with quad-core CPU and AMD video card. I had only a very minor cosmetic glitch in Wellspring and certain areas. This was fixed by the 11.10 AMD driver update. The game has consistently run at very high framerates at 1080p on my laptop and the visuals have been excellent other than the minor glitch.

The NVIDIA drivers allow for GPU transcoding and since you have a quad core CPU and NVIDIA GTX 460, you should have great results.

Since the following are coming soon, just hold off and buy the game in a couple weeks:

1. new NVIDIA driver optimized for RAGE
2. patch for the game that makes it easier to change graphics settings
3. 64-bit executable
4. official mod and level design tool

What's the story with 64-bit exe? 64bit systems cant run the game now?

So there is an official patch coming to fix those errors? Will it include the exe file?

Just received a word from my friend that bought it on 360, he says its fun akin to border lands but... different ;)
So I'm still inclined to buy the game... I guess.

One concern tough, is it so closed and corridor-like experience as some say? Are those side quests entertaining or simple boring fetch quests?

If any one else is wondering, you CAN return back to wellssprings after you do that certain mission to leave. All I did was 1 main mission and maybe 2 side quests in the new area, returned to where I came from, and there was a fellow there asking me if I wanted to go back.

The style is similar to Borderlands, but it doesn't seem to have much in the way of RPG elements.

My personal experience with Rage is quite horrible. It doesn't run anything like the videos I've seen, but those were 360 videos. I am attempting to run it on my PC (quite a new system with very good hardware). The game looks awful (the textures mainly, they're laughably bad), there's a lot tearing AND it's extremely choppy at the same time. Of course before updating my drivers I also had a big weird stripe across the screen. I guess testing with the standard non-beta drivers is too much work. I am willing to forgive a lot if a game is good, but I can't believe they would release Rage in this state.

I should have read more about the game before I bought it for the PC. I just didn't imagine id Software would turn their backs on PC gamers. Then again, I also remember thinking it's been quite a while since they released anything even remotely interesting.

The 64 bit exe I think is mostly for the modding community.  I don't see at all how the game itself could benefit from a 64 bit exe, because it doesn't use much memory as far as I can tell.

I haven't beaten the game yet, but from what I've seen so far, it's an even split between open environment and corridor..

What are the specs on your PC?  Also, if you look at the previous page, I posted a CFG config that makes the game look much better..

Yeah I saw it after I posted. It is good advice for sure, but I also hear there is a patch coming so you can actually configure it for the PC (currently you can set resolution, antialiasing and gpu transcoding). So I am just going to wait it out and play one of the three other games I am not quite done with yet.

My specs are quite similar to yours. Same cpu (not overclocked, but it is liquid cooled and runs quite cool at 4.3 if I want), but a 590 (so probably a bit below two 580s in performance), and my RAM is at 1666. I very much doubt there is a performance issue.

If you have screen tearing, just enable V-sync, and turn on triple buffering in the control panel. Also, make sure you have the latest drivers, which at this point is the 285.38 drivers, and then update them via the update function.

It isn't just the tearing, I was just surprised to have the tearing and the choppy performance at the same time. The 285.38 did not turn out to be a big success for me. So I will wait a bit.

the RAGE patch is now live on Steam.

Also, this website is great for tailoring a cfg file: http://donotargue.com/cfg-makers/rage/

I meant it is a plot point, a certain npc says I should wrap up loose ends and prepare to move out.

You must be farther along than me. I haven't gotten to that point yet, but then again, I've been doing oodles of side quests, races, and authority drone jumps.

I did see that you added an update that you can go back. Good to know! :D

I've been playing for about 21 hours now and I'm not sure exactly, but I feel like I'm probably about half-way through the game. I just returned from picking up the defribilator in the Dead City.

It seems to have a lot more content than what was described in the early reviews, at least if you are into exploration and side-quests, etc. IIRC Bioshock and ME2 only lasted around 30-40 hours without DLC.

The delivery service quests, racing missions and sniper quests usually seem to take several tries for me to complete. Playing primarily on HARD (although I had to reduce it to Normal to beat the first Sniper quest).

I agree, I only bought it recently so I havent got too far. I'm currently running side quests from Well Spring and I haven't seen hide nor hair of the Authority. Visually it is a stunning game, oh and I love the combat shotgun, it really sounds like it packs a punch when it hits.

It does seem to be a problem with most reviews. They are either done with the publisher breathing down their neck or they have to be done in a very short time scale, before one can really explore the game properly. A shame really when some games benefit from exploration and improve vastly as they progress.

But suffice to say I'm really enjoying it, I waited a few days after release just to see how it progressed, but I was still able to pick up the upgraded edition, I can't remember what it was called, so I'm happy.Image IPB

Is it me, or is the 3.3 on Metacritic insane?

Perhaps lots of people who aren't able to run it or something?

After the silly DA2 scores just more evidence of the uselessness of metacritic.

From what I've read, some people (including ones in this thread) have had issues with the PC version of it being a little buggy, but there are ways around that. I have the 360 version, and haven't had a single problem. In fact, I'm surprised every time I see the Bethesda name on the load screen, as I'm used to Bethesda experiences being riddled with reboots and resets. Everything has been perfectly smooth, with no lag or other nonsense.

I don't put a whole lot of stock into Metacritic reviews. They also more or less panned Dead Island, which I love, too. My husband and I have been playing that since its release. We could have probably completed it by now, but we're enjoying it too much to finish it...if that makes sense.

I think Metacritic can be helpful if you look at the score relating to professional critics and official reviews, rather than whatever score is associated with random people voting things up or down.

In this case, RAGE got 82, 79 and 84, respectively, for Xbox, PC and PS3.

Not quite, most of the Pc complaints are centered around technical issues, which plagued the release. DA 2 got lambasted from every angle and every platform, maybe to an unfair extent. But, considering over 3000 people bothered to do so and less than 500 have done so for Rage on the PC, whilst the xbox version has double the score. Seems to imply that, when something gets people riled up they put the boot in with all the subtlety of half a brick in a sock, it doesn't mean that Da2 was well recieved because people are not exactly nuanced in their response.

OMG, I know, they're adorable! I had one get stuck in a side passage in the prison last night, and felt terrible leaving the poor little guy there!

On a side note, and a separate topic for discussion...perhaps something we could present as a "want" to BioWare for the next DA? Just a thought (I know I'd like to see this).

Dynamic Town/City Environments

I've noticed as of late that the town of Wellspring is an ever-changing, ever-evolving atmosphere. When you first get there, you have a certain number of places that you can go, and a certain number of NPCs you can speak with, as the whole town is leery of "strangers". Once you do a few quests for people in the town, and gain a little respect and confidence from them as a whole, more areas become available. There are more people willing to talk to you, and a door or two opens that was previously inaccessible.

Walking around town, I noticed that aside from the NPCs patrolling or strolling, there were some that actually changed locations. Olive was one in particular that moved around a few times, I noticed. When she did, she typically had something different to say. If you go in the bar, each time, there are different people in there. Some will talk to you, some won't. I assume at some point, they all will.

My point that I'm failing miserably to describe is that Wellspring felt alive. It felt dynamic. It felt like people noticed when you did something good, and they came right up and thanked you for it. Things changed on the streets, as well as within the shops. NPCs seemed to have minds of their own.

Isn't this something that could happen with DA3? Could you imagine what Kirkwall would have been like in DA2 if things changed over the course of the game? I think that if Kirkwall would have felt like Wellspring, people would have embraced it.

Just a thought.
