I have a sword and board warrior that's gotten stuck fighting the mages in the Burning Tower part of the Fade.
This is the first place I went to after Lothering so I have really basic equipment. There are four mages in the next room past the area with the rage demons that appear in pairs. I've tried several approaches (this would be my ninth failure to defeat them).
My Warriors stats:
Level: 8
Str: 28
Dex: 22
Will: 16
Mag: 12
Cun: 16
Con: 23
Equip:
Helm: Thane's Helmet
Armor: Full Heavy Chainmail (steel)
Sword: Oathkeeper
Shield: The Shield of Highever
I tend to die within seconds of entering the room. Help?

Retreat and try to lure them out individually (or in pairs). Station yourself out of sight beside a doorway or behind a pillar and attack when they follow you. The burning man can be helpful as it is immune to their fireballs.

Thank you! It worked! I may be able to get out of the stupid place now.

Note that the next room will have five mages, and the subsequent section of the Fade will add golems to the mix.

The next five were easy. I stayed as the burning man and defeated them, no sweat. Golems I hope won't be too difficult.

When you have all four shapeshifting abilities, don't forget to backtrack to get all the juicy attribute points (there are 21 points available).

Have you been to Mage's Asunder yet? That is the one area that gives me much trouble.
Just remember to use the various shapeshifter forms and try to not fight too many enemies at once if it can be helped. If you managed to buy The Spellward amulet from Bodhan and/or are a templar, then equip the templar armor that you would have gotten from that templar with the desire demon, just prior to meeting Sloth. Magic resistance is handy here.
The spirit form has nice magic resistance, and has access to regeneration, winter's grasp and crushing prison. This is probably the best overall form when in combat.
If I'm playing as a warrior or rogue (or arcane warrior mage), I like to stick with burning man form, as long as I'm not getting hammered by enemy mages.
The mouse form has it's use for the mouse holes. The golem form gets the least amount of use from me because of the horrible melee accuracy. It's main use is to break down doors that can't be opened otherwise.
Also, it helps to save often. Save before and after each room/encounter if needed.

I disagree with you about the golem form. Read on ...
I had trouble in the Fade as well, but after getting all 4 forms and figuring out their talents/spells, it was a cakewalk. My modus operandi was going into a room that was empty beside the room full of enemies. I would use crushing prison on one enemy, which would kill it 99% of the time. Then I would Winter's Grasp another. Then I would wait for them to come after me, which entailed going through several doors to get to me. Then I would fireball them. Whatever survived that would get the Hurl ability from golem form, which is an extremely powerful AOE (area of effect). This would kill everything 99% of the time.
I would pretty much do the same thing with bosses, such as the ogre. I would only drop to my human rogue form to cast Mark of Death.
The Fade takes some getting used to. After I got used to it, I liked it.

I enjoyed the shapeshifting forms of the Fade, too. Maybe moreso than the forms that can be learned as a mage (bear, spider, and so on).
My first playthrough I was reluctant to experiment with the powers held by the various shapeshifting forms, and that probably made it more difficult for me to progress through the various areas. Now I use pretty much all the abilities I can, and going through is relatively easy even on nightmare difficulty.
Probably gives a big advantage to know in advance how to defeat the various enemies, though...

Do people really have problems with the Fade? Those mages the OP mentioned are really the only hard part of the whole endeavor. As long as you use all your various shapeshifting forms (Crushing Prison, Winters Grasp, Fireball) you should be fine.
And of course, once you get Golem form, the whole thing is just a cakewalk.
