They should focus on making a game that delivers higher-end quality, infused with a spirit of creativity and vision, and deliver that in a sensible way that is both entertaining and immersible. Pretty much what most gamers would ask for anyways. I think part of the reason why peoples' opinions of DA2 is so polarized was because somewhere during the design process, they focused too much on the technical aspects of the game and targeting certain segments of the gaming market, and hence the game became forgettable and unidentifiable for some. They perhaps thought Mass Effect 2 would be a good model for DA2, and again, they scribbled down notes and churned out a hybrid game that didn't exactly fit together that well.
Making an enjoyable game is like the artist and the painting. Some styles work better than others, but ultimately, it's down to the artist putting out the effort and his imagination in the first place to make his piece brilliant.

Unfortunately, we don't all agree about what the "best of both" is.
When do you ever agree on anything lol, I love some of your ideas though.

So marrying the two really isn't that appealing.

Honestly, I don't know what Origins sees in him ... <_<
When I think of the child of such a marriage ... I ... get ... kinda ...
Just more condescending, ass-covering, corporate double-speak bull-sh!t.

While I didn't like Origins' combat system at first (console gamer here), it knew what it was and did what it was supposed to do rather well. When I look at the changes made from ME1 to ME2, the combat has improved because it's obvious what that team was going for - a Gears-like experience - and I applaud them for doing what needed to be done. As for Dragon Age, they could've easily kept doing what they were for another game or two, but if they really want to create a more responsive combat system, they should've gone all the way (think God of War, Dante's Inferno, Bayonetta).
Some half-way compromise isn't the answer, I'm afraid.

All just conceptual yammering at this point since DA3 is (or should be) a fair way off yet.

I'll believe that when I see it. They're probably just saying that and it'll end up being a lot more like Dragon Age 2.
We can only hope!
There are areas where I think DAO did a better job, but as far as the combat, visual design and character interaction go I preferred DA2. Going forward, I'd like a blend of 60% DA2 and 40% DAO. (Where DAO provides the environment variety, game length and item descriptions.)

So very true.
Especially...when we don't even know what they consider to be the best of origins.

Voiced character - I hated the fact my character was awkwardly mute while everyone else were talking in full dialogue during Origins.
Rogues - Where are the fancy moves and flipping around I saw in Sacred Ashes trailer? Rogues in DA:O were nothing more than watered-down warriors to me.
Companions chat - It was better to "spread out" the companions chatting in DA2, instead of DA:O's "Let's spend 20 mins in camp just clicking on you and going through ALL your dialogues".
Gifts - No more of the "I know you hate me...so let's give you 15 gifts at once to make you love me!"
Friendship/Rivalry - It could be improved definitely...but at least better than DA:O's 1-way friendship system.
Specializations - An entire tree is better than 4 skills.
Elves - I KNOW. MAJORITY OF ELVES ARE FUGLY. But oh Maker! Have you seen Merrill
Legacy Darkspawn - Legacy improved greatly on Darkspawn variety and unique looks, so please bring that forward too.

Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice and you get an alternate appearance pack. Or was it a $7 day one DLC? I can never tell these days.

True. I remember M. Laidlaw saying something along the lines of DA2 already had everything he wanted to keep from DA1. Hopefully he's changed his mind.Brockololly wrote...
Considering it was claimed in many interviews prior to DA2's release that DA2 would be "Origins but better!" I don't exactly have any clue as to what elements of Origins the devs actually think are worthwhile.
