Is there a trick to using the ballistas during the final archdemon battle? I press A to move the ballistas around, but they NEVER fire at the archdemon. I've tried all of them during different times during the battle and they all fire in the opposite direction of the archdemon. It's getting damn frustrating.
I've heard that you need the ballistas when the archdemon flies onto that platform to hit him, but none of them fire on his location. How do these abominable things work?!

Rotate them towards Archie and then fire.
Edit: it is possible you are out of range.

I've tried that. They either rotate away from him or they won't rotate at all--but will fire--usually into a wall or into oblivion. God, this game sucks.
Edit: Like I said, I've tried EVERY single ballista, even ones right next to the archdemon on that platform, and NONE will rotate to fire on him.
I just want to kill the archdemon and finish this crappy:sick: game already.

Sounds like a bug.
Anyway, the ballistae are not mandatory.

I sympathize, as I found the ballistae to be useless myself. But you can kill the Archdemon without them. Simply make sure to have at least one character with ranged attacks.

I always sort of assumed that the ballistae were simply examples of Ferelden's lack of reliable mechanical devices. Any mechanism more complicated than a door latch probably would not work when it was most needed.
As far as I can see it is a pre-industrial society.
But the good news is that the ballistae are not really required to defeat the Archdemon. I normally rely on archers to do the job.

Have you called upon your allies? You can call upon the elves (ranged attack) or the mages (ranged atack also) to help you in this battle.
As I remember it, there a lever, you'll need to push or press to get the ballistas to move. Also, it seems you can only use the ballistas when the Archdemon has flown its first position up to its other position (on a hill or mount or something like that...)

I don't bother with the ballistas.
Just kill the darkspawn for a bit, picking up xp in the process, then the archdemon will eventually come back over. Until they do come back over, I mostly ignore the archdemon, and focus on the darkspawn.

You can only use the ballistas when AD has moved to that one area of the map that you can't attack it by melee. If AD is within melee range, better to kill him up close and personal.
