I've read the comic book that came with the Collectors Edition. Hideous. Simply hideous. That new Vega comic was horrible as well. It could be a cultural thing because I grew up with Belgian and French comics (Lucky Luke, Asterix, Tintin) which actually have more than three panels per page and take more than a minute to read. What bugs me about the Mass Effect comics is that they feel like they were made in a factory and not by an artist.

I grew up with 12-16 panels per page and with varying line art quality but much worse coloring, so I doubt it's a cultural thing.

Although Lucky Luke and Asterix were among the comics I used read too. They are probably stuffed in some box somewhere.

The comics are pretty bad and are a disgrace to the ME universe in my opinion..

You can tell he's really desperate to get sales anyway. You can be proud of yourself and everything, but it's unlikely that anyone who's never played ME would even like the comics.

But he claims it's actually happened and that he himself is surprised. I don't believe he would lie about something like this so there it is as far as I'm concerned.

And this is what concerns me about this... we have two contradicting... things here...

I refuse to believe that 20% of people Mac Walters talked to on Comic Con said that the don't like video games but they became deeply immersed and consider themselves fans of Mass Effect universe simply by reading those comics... I simply refuse...

And on the other hand I honestly wouldn't like to believe that an adult person - not some faceless game developer from BioWare, but Mac Walters, leader of the writing team for Mass Effect pulls this kind of bullseet with a smile on his face. Honestly, the day I'm forced to acknowledge that will be a sad day for me.

Help me out here...

Well, the first 1.5 pages of this thread, that had all the makings of a thread for actual fans of the ME comics speaks a very clear language as to how well the comics are received by fans of the ME franchise.
Sufficed to say, I completely agree with the the general tone in this thread. The comics are not very good, their stories and art is lacking, compared to everything else in the franchise (except maybe ME: Galaxy) and the inconsistencies they introduce make them even worse.
I don't understand why BW continues that line. They listen usually but in this case they seem to refuse.

I have a hard time buying a lot of comic book readers or even some can enjoy the series with zero knowledge of ME 1 or 2. The stories and characters aren't well developed from an outsiders perspective to the series and they come across as 'filler' which is exactly what they are meant to be.
I think that the story is what hurts the series more then the art since non-gamers will not be familiar with the characters apperance in game but probably familiar with Dark Horses style and won't be bothered by blatantly poor designs, like Wrex with no scars, as would a ME gamer.

Mac: "Well, now that I think about it, that one person doesn't really represent 20% of the hundreds of fans I talked to. And, come to think about it, that one person didn't seem to know much about the IP anyway."

David: "Shut up and write what I tell you to write, fool."

The Mass Effect comics are far better than the EA Comics/IDW Dragon Age comics. That was second worst comic series I ever read the worse being a tie between Transformers: Revelations and Transformers: Maximum Dinobots.

I wonder what other staff at BioWare think about the comics. I guess we'll never know because they have to toe the company line like any employee.

I've read some of the comics and most of the books to date, but mostly out of fleeting interest, and the desire to absorb something, anything, Mass Effect related. Sadly, I scarcely remember most of what I read - or maybe it's a good thing I don't.

Well there are people who like the Baysformers movies so I'm sure people could like these comics too.

I met several die hard Transfans that LOVE Bay's 3 movies and several that hate them. I've known seveal that like the comics based on the Bay movies and think that they're far better than the movies for the most part but then again I think a vast majority of Transfans love the comics over the various shows and movies.

Personally I think they are garbage and each one has fundamentally undermined the franchise as a whole and actively work against the quality of the games. As the series goes from Space Adventure / SciFi to Action Schlock, with catsuits and supervillans.

I think that part of the problem is that since Mass Effect 3 isn't out yet, (and when they started the first mini-series ME2 wasn't out at the time) I don't think you can do a "good" (since I actually like the comics for what they are and I found them good and fun reads) series because the core storyline of Shepard vs. the Reapers isn't done yet. I mean I once posted at the DH forums that as much as I hate the continuing mini-series format I don't think you could do a Mass Effect ongoing series until after ME3 was released.

I would love to see a Mass Effect: Origins maxi-series dealing with the backstories about each of the various squadmates from all 3 games each showing what they were doing before they met Shepard.

As far as the art goes at least the artist at least looks like he played the games unlike the hacks that drew the God-awful Dragon Age mini-series.

I agree in that the comics are bad if you bunch them together with Mass Effect the games, but I for one do enjoy (to a very certain extent) all those Marvel-superhero comics that the ME-comics are very much alike.. Only difference for me (comic-wise): Marvel have superheroes/mutants, supernatural powers, mostly Earth-based plots (or at least Earth is the main base). ME-comics: humans/aliens, lots of tech/biotics, based out in space or on a planet somewhere, or a spaceship..
Oh, and all the characters (in both kinds) have these very witty lines all the time. And similar personalities. I kind of mixed up Liara with Storm once...

I don't lump the comics and ME together though. That would just be bad. But kept apart, pretty ok. Kind of like how "Grease 2" is a great movie, just not as a "Grease"-movie..

I don't know a single soul on Earth personally who admits to reading comic books. Do people really do that?! That whole medium was old school to me - beyond fossilized.

Even if you GAVE me the whole superman set - ALL of them, I would sell it rather than read it.

I get that some peeps may like comics, and thats cool, its just so..... alien to me. That and know one I know even owns a comic book.

I read comic books, I just don't like buying the until the price goes down. Its just like manga, the price of admission for something you can read in a manner of minutes needs to fit.

Personal opinion mate Image IPB    Though maybe "great" is a bit too much. "Good"?

Oh, and on the other topic, I have no qualms telling people I like reading cartoons. I usually don't buy them though, but that's mostly because I never have any money, and saving the little I have is much more important than personal pleasures (usually get games as gifts).

Speak for yourself. Just because you, Quole, don't enjoy something doesn't mean it's idiot material.
Love the immaturity in these forums.
