However this is bugged and I don't know if the last patch (1.03) fixed the issue.

You can convince Anders to fight the Mages, if you have him at rivalry.

1.03 did fix the issue. With the last patch you can keep Anders and side with the templars but you have to be at full Rivalry (and obviously spare his life) for this to happen.
I think this is wretched and terrible storycraft myself. Given everything we know about Anders and how Justice can take him over at any time, Anders should NEVER side with the Templars under ANY conditions. Just my take.

Maybe if Justice was in a severely weakened state where he couldn't take Anders over it might be better. I agree though that a man who keeps losing himself to Justice (especially when Hawke can try to get him to remove the bomb balm) but is somehow able to keep Justice in check at the most critical point where Justice would (and should) force Anders to fight for the mages is.... kinda absurd.

I'm trying to get rid of both Anders and Sebastian in my current play through. (Also handing Isabela to the Arishok and giving Fenris to Danarius. I almost wish I'd had Carver die so I could get down to only three companions, which is the lowest number the game will allow ...)

If you tell him to go away you have to kill him. Kinda sucks. I was full Rivalry too!
Good news for me, though! Thanks for letting me know.

Yeah this was my Mike Hawke play through. I sided with the templars, spared anders so I could lose sebestian and then kill ander's later so it was just Aveline, Varric, Merril and Hawke. It's funny that no one misses fenris when he's gone but everyone misses Isabella.Andrastee wrote...
What happens under patch 1.03 if you let Anders live at full rivalry, side with the Templars and tell him to go away? Does he still turn up to fight you and get killed?
