I bought BG2 Complete from GOG and I was wondering if I click should I click on shadows of amn to start the game or ToB? Is ToB just "added in" to the original game if I start with that or do I need to play it completely separately (like say Awakenings in DA:O)
thanks
Also is there a key that shows all the possible clickable items and things like that as in DA:O? The tutorial didn't mention anything.
Start with ToB?

SoA and ToB have only one area in common, Watcher's Keep (a multi-level dungeon). I'd play the entire game from the start if i were you, not just ToB. After completing SoA, you'll automatically continue with ToB with all the party members and all items you had during the last battle in ToB.
The tab key shows containers and items you can pick up.

Except for Watchers Keep, ToB is pretty much a very long series of battles without much of a plot development compared to SoA. Unless you just want to play a "shooter", SoA is a bettter choice.

The series goes like this:
Baldur's Gate 1 + Tales of the Sword Cast >> Baldur's Gate 2 Shadows of Amn >> Baldur's Gate 2 Throne of Bhall.
If I were you I'd start at Baldur's Gate 1. Install a mod called Tutu which lets you run BG1 in the BG2 engine - so improved graphics, gameplay, enemies, more variety of kits and classes etc etc. It just makes playing BG1 better.
You can play Tales of the Sword Coast at any time during BG1, the areas are open the moment you make a new character. Once you've completed BG1, start BG2 and import your character from BG1. Once you've completed BG2, Throne of Bhall will automatically start after the end fight and you will start it just as you finished SoA - so with all your equipment and NPCs.
Hope that makes sense!

thanks guys, cleared it up for me a lot
I thought about starting with BG1 with the mod that lets you play it in BG2 engine but I read it's a lot more open and less story driven than BG2 which kinda worried me tbh because I really dislike the so-called "go anywhere do anything" type rpgs with little or no story (oblivion for example)

There is plenty of story in BG1, you shouldn't be worried about that. It's my favourite part of the game tbh.
You CAN go anywhere, but where you go should be dictates by the missions and side-missions. Besides, if you go some places too early you will find it very difficult to survive there.
I strongly recommend to play BG1 before BG2, because it's a great game and once you start with BG2 you can't really play BG1 and get deeply involved in the story in the same way as some of it will be spoilt.

What Pangaea said, if it's story you're after then you should DEFINITELY start with BG1. The games aren't disjointed in terms of story, they all flow into one another so I seems only natural to start at the beginning right?
Also I'd recommend playing with the 'canon party' if you do play BG1 first. BG2 assumes you completed BG1 with a certain party, it's not game breaking to have a party that isn't the canon party but it does help make the whole experience more immersive and seamless.

IMO You will enjoy playing bg1 more if you upgrade to the bg2 engine (tutu)... the extra companions in bg1 makes playing an evil party much more viable but be warned that killing bystanders can have drastic results.

bg1 and bg2 are different games. Bg2 is like all these new games. Throws stuff at you. Bg1 is oldschool, you must actually search for an anventure. While bg2 might come as unrealistic, bg1 might come as boring.

Although I play SoA much more frequently than BG, I remember being ambushed on the roads and in the forests of Candlekeep, the FA Inn Neshkel, etc., just as often as on the streets of Amkathla. Where do you see the difference?

the quest/area^2 density. Say in bg1, after tutorial. 1rst area - nothing, 2nd area - 2 dialogs, 3 area.. 1 ogre.I actually like bg1 more, just like everything else oldschool, like Morrowind, but its nowhere near DA or BG2 for people who want action. First area in BG2.. is like what 11 dialogs, full of traps, machines, chests, non generic fights, 3 quests, unique mobs, unique tiles, unique items etc. It does somewhat hurt immersion, but..

OK, I see your point. There are times in Athkatla when you are in the midst of pounding thugs when who should show up but a bunch of vampires and even a party of Giths. But your party is, say, level10+, instead of level 3 or 4, so you just hit the pause button, figure out who is going to summon what, and then pulverize all enemies in a turn or two, and look to see if anyone got a level promotion. I guess multi-tasking was alive and well on the streets of a medieval renaissance Italian town in the 15th century, as a contrast to just having to worry about a few trolls or bandits on the English moors at about the same time. Chacon son gaut.

Hehe thats for sure. Were i to live in Alkathla, i'd be afraid to go to a grocery store.

With Tutu or BGT (I wonder why nobody mentions that anymore, am I the only one who prefers it?) BG1 is pretty much on the same level as BG2.
Edit: One difference: BG1 has probably the better story of the two.

I like BG2 more.
Actually Irenicus and Bodhi are much better developed and interesting characters than are Sarevok and his monions.
Also, why doesn't anyone mention that you can actually play with the original BG1 engine and still use the widescreen mod?
I find the original engine much more fitting, tutu or BGT introduce some balance issues (like Kit special abilities or more powerful spells which weren't in the original game.)
But I guess that's all a matter of opinion ^^.

Nope, i prefer BGT too. I doubt Tutu is more popular nowadays, though.
Most people on the GOG forum seem to prefer BGT, especially because BWP
was promoted quite heavily there.
