I won't be begrudge EA for killing RPG's, their goal is to continue to turn profits for its shareholders. If a majority of gamers loved the traditional RPG like many of us do, then I'm certain more time and effort would be put forth to bring more great products to the forefront. Follow the Money, be it because people don't have the time they used to have to devote to video games, the genre's gamers aging, or trying to cater to new audiences, or simply because RPG's may be judged to "immersive" by some in the power, certain people and groups have judged it be a genre that no longer is feasible to make max profits because they are devoting huge amounts of time, energy and resources to "maybe" fail.

If EA/Bioware see the risk as too great to continue developing great RPG's, then thats what they are going do, but they shouldn't be surprised if they're market share for that genre goes to other developers that want to continue moving true RPG's forward. In the long term, Bioware's reputation is damaged, but with the backing of EA, it doesn't matter as much as it would've had the merger happened earlier in the company's history.

Like I did in a previous thread, I'll reiterate that, production costs down, coupled with a game selling well initially then flat lining quickly (coming off the massive acclaim the prior game received, this game should have sold better strictly based on the game's name) doesn't seem to suggest a substantial new audience picked up the game, it also doesn't jusitify a promotion for the Lead Designer in my opinion. The latter being the final straw for my decision not to purchase DA3.

I really dont think the COD or Gears audience are too interested in RPGS. Sure you level up in Gears and COD but lets get real...most of that audience is not going to wanna touch a game with swords and Bi-sexual elves hitting on you. Im not saying anythings wrong with that, just that it's not everyones cup of tea.

Yeah, sometimes you shouldn't mix all the flavors in your spice cabinet together. Spices are a wonderful thing to have but not all ingredients go well together to make "an ultimate recipe." It seems alot of software developers are trying to make the solent green equivalent of a video game these days that will appeal to the widest margin of audiences. The result of several titles I've seen in the past couple of years just ends up a patchworked Frankenstein monster of game features crossing old genres while excluding some of the deeper elements which helped define the old genres amongst alot of gamers. I understand trying to make a product that is fun for a broad market, that's money and money is good for a company to grow, but I'm not sure some combinations are a good idea. This is especially true when more defining traits are taken away from a genre than are added to it by a merger with another genre.

I my as well throw my two cents in here. They had the action RPG fans covered with Mass Effect they need two make DA3 more like Origins than DA2 . Though i did like the character design of DA2.

The funny thing is that the old infinity engine D&D games (like baldur's gates, planescape torment, ice wind dale etc) still sell quite well. New players are constantly drawn into playing them. Same applies for games like never winter nights or fallout 1-2. So called "complexity" is not scaring people off. Infact many times I've heard from the younger gamer crowd how surprised they are to notice how much fun these older games are and how satisfying the experience feels compared to more recent rpg releases. People love that challenge isn't constantly scaled on player's own level or that player is allowed actually to make wrong decisions. Thus character progression feels more meaningfull. Number crunching hasn't still gone out of style. :)

Orgins was a game that honoured this tradition. I hope it ain't last of it's kind.

Please, for the love of god, no one listen to this crap. It's just a hopeless attempt at appeasement among the DA community. It's soulless PR talk.

The new audience? What new audience? Your sales plumeted when DA2 released. There is no new audience, only pissed off DAO fans and DAO fans who also loved DA2.

CDPR, don't ever change, don't ever turn into another one of these soulless money grubbing corporations.

This.

I'm tired of that canned byline.

If a dead horse deserves to be beaten, then let the floggings begin.

The only people who think a dead horse deserves to be beaten, are lunatics.

If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell
him is, "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute
thing to tell him is, "Probably because of something you did

How could something that's dead deserve to be beaten? It's... dead.

Yes, indeed.  If EAWare were truly caught off guard by grognard rejection of the half-baked, actiony, repetitive, slimmed-down-for-consoles disapointment that was DA2 and their foolish and very premature burial of DA:O, then they have no one but themselves to blame.  Clearly they bought into their own press releases and marketing propaganda rather than assessing their efforts with anything like a measure of objectivity.  Image IPB

To me it comes of like Bioware are trying to spin the criticism into something more positive for them - people are saying "this game is bad" but Bioware are claiming that instead they're saying "this game is too innovative for me to handle". And people don't really like being spun.

BINGO!

Nor do people like lame attempts at deflection when the source of the displeasure is blatantly obvious.

Yep.. and there are great video games and lame ones. DA2 is not in the first category. Next BW will start making sports games in Ferelden because that's where the money is! FIFA 12 sold 3.2 mil in a week? woot!

In response to The Executioner,

Personally, I love combat in DA2. Its fast-ish, and still requires planning and strategy (especially on harder difficulties). In fact, I can't go back to DA:O now. I've tried and the combat is just awful in comparison. Waddling to an opponent like you just messed yourself isnt fun, neither is trying to slowly shuffle around an enemy to attack it.

Thats totaly an opinion.

For instance... I think DA2 is a great game. Its not the best game of the last 2 years, but I found it to be pretty damn enjoyable, especially when compared to other games I've played and other games that came out in the last few years.

YMMV. I play on NM because I want friendly fire, and most fights I win I end bored because I see no fun in having to hit something 20 times to kill it. Rinse and repeat. And here comes another wave. Etc. At least in Origins once I got to hitting distance of the opponent things were fun (from level 6 on at least).

Yep, YMMV.

I just think that the combat in DA2 is a good speed with some great flare (some of it is admittedly over the top). Its more enjoyable for me to watch, and a lot more visceral than auto attacking with the ocasional ability use.
