Alright so I just started playing BG2 recently and I have a few questions.

1. When I look at spells (say, Imoen's for example) why are there numbers next to them as if they're limited? Do spells in BG2 work differently from in DA:O and can only be used so many times? If so, what do I need to get more "charges" for each one?
2. How do I backstab? I have an assassin as my character and I'm not sure. Along the same lines, how do I tell if my weapon has poison on it?
3. How do I use the battle AI and what are good settings for the starting characters? And how do I use "custom"? When I click custom they just dont seem to do anything at all. In DA:O  I had all my characters using pretty detailed sequences of pre-set spells/attacks. I microed often still but it still saved a bit trouble when fighting weak enemies
etc.
4. Is there an easy to way to see what spells/effects are affecting a character/enemy other than looking through the combat log?
5. Is there any reason to *not* rest after every single battle?

thanks guys

1. memorize, rest, cast, repeat
2. first attack while unseen is a backstab
3. no AI, scripts, and they are no good because of 1.
4. no
5. no (but its the same as drinking potions in DAO)

Well after messing around with the spell system some more I gotta say I really like it and how it means you can't just spam spells endlessly but have to carefully think about which ones to place in each slot. Very cool. I can tell that'll get real interesting when I start facing harder enemies.

One question though, how do I get more slots for each level of spell? Do I get one more for every time I level up?

You get a few more of them every level up, and as a rule, you get access to a new spell level every other level up.

As for backstabbing, make sure you're actually behind the enemy when you do it; enemies can backstab you in the face due to engine limitations, but you can't.

As for sleeping, you can do that whenever you like, though some places are more dangerous to sleep in than others: sleeping in a dungeon might refresh your spells, or it might end with a dozen enemies attacking you in your sleep. Other than that, there's no reason, apart from roleplaying, why you can't spend most of the game day asleep.

What is "behind"... I mean do you have to be directly behind them or just off to the side?

And to be unseen does that mean I have to be "cloaked" (or whatever the thief ability is called) or invisible due to a spell? Or can I just run up and backstab someone if they're fighting someone else?

And what determines whether I'll get ambushed by enemies while asleep... is it just if they happen to have a patrol route through that spot or what?

Oh and this might be a dumb question but is there any way to have the music keep playing while I'm messing around in the inventory?

And lastly is there anywhere to see descriptions of special abilities? With spells I can open up inventory and right click to get info but I don't see that option for special abilities (Beserk, poison weapon etc)

thanks for the answers

You don't get more QUICK SLOTS. But you can cast any Spell on the LEFTHAND page of your spellbook that you prepared before you rested. If you have, say, 5 level 1 lhp slots and know 5 lev 1 spells, you can prepare one of each, or five copies of just one spell for "tomorrow". It's entirely up to you, and you can do this for every mage and cleric in your party. You can change the spell list every time you rest, as well as bringing over spells from the RIGHTHAND page to a blank slot on the lhp. Once you've played a little, you'll find that it only takes a few seconds to do all this.
You get more spell scrolls for your mages by robbing corpses, treasure chests, shopping, etc., but clerics only get their spells from their gods (but they can buy a few scrolls in temples and use them - BUT DON'T LEARN THEM)
In general as you rise in level, you get more powerful spells, rather than  more copies of low level spells: mages ultimately get 9 power levels (actually 10 in a half-assed way) and clerics 7 levels. One thing to always check is how long it takes to cast a spell, and how long they last. Defensive spells that you use before seeing the enemy are usually OK with long casting times, but you usually want offensive battle spells that cast quick.: if your NPC mage gets peppered with arrows, his 5 round cast spell just fizzles even if he isn't killed. Another bit of magic user philosophy is the first thing for a mage to do is to help take out any enemy mages/clerics. Magic becomes more important than muscle as you go thru BG2.

There's a bit of latitude, but you have to be roughly opposite the direction they're facing when the attack is made.

Yes. You have to be in stealth or invisible. A thief can only hide in shadows if there are no enemies onscreen, and the chance of success to hide is influenced by the lighting in the spot the thief is standing. Invisibility (from spells or potions) has no limitation.

It's completely random, depending on the map. The encounter will have the chance to occur anywhere on that map when you rest.

No.

Not in the game, no. The kit description (from the character profile page) will describe some, for characters that have kits.

There aren't a ton of special abilities, so just ask if you can't figure one out.

Ok welll for starters how do poison weapon and beserk work :)?

I guess the main thing I wanted to know is duration...

And for beserk, it seemed like I was losing control of the character that was going beserk and he would attack both enemies and friendlies at random... confusing.

thanks

Poison weapon lasts 5 rounds (30 seconds), any hit with a ranged or melee weapon injects the poison.

Berserk last 10 rounds, at the end the character is fatigued for 5 rounds and can't go berserk again during this time.

Minsc's berserk ability is different, it lasts twice as long and doesn't have a cooldown period - but as you notice he is uncontrollable and attacks anyone, so it's not very useful: A PC created berserker (or Korgan, the other berserker in the game) does not suffer this drawback.

There is berserk, a ranger class ability. A Berserker, a fighter subclass. And berserker rage, a berserker's class ability. :D

Barbarians also have a berserk ability. As with Berserkers this does not cause them to lose control, but their version only lasts 5 rounds and has different effects to Berserker rage.  Both Barbarians and Berserkers can use their ability a certain number of times each days (starts at 1 at 1st level and increases by 1 every few levels).
