I GUESS he could smoke, but the drinking thing was more just because you were in a bar, so it gave you a chance to drink. Not like he did it in his cabin (I know about Kasumi, that was just a silly little thing to play with).

Smoking is bad for your health, but it's been demonized by society far more than it deserves. The idea that it is more dangerous or unhealthy than alcohol is frankly absurd. Someone addicted to both tobacco and alcohol will have a dead liver long before a dead lung. Mot to mention alcohol can cause people to start fights and crash their car, which tobacco won't do. Not advocating smoking, but peoples opinion of it these days is completely over-exaggerated.
BTW smokers are aware that it is bad. I've never met a smoker that argues otherwise. In fact I find it a bit silly that non-smokers (at the bar/pub and whatnot) always make statements like "you know thats bad for you, right?", as if the smoker just didn't notice or something.
Renegade Shep could be a smoker and it would fit the hollywood convention, but as Chris mentioned (in his littlemis-direction kind of way), they wouldn't put resources toward something like that. I wish like OP that some of my more rugged Sheps could smoke. Healthy or not, it's more of an image thing based on society's overblown hatred of cigarettes.
<spelling and clarity edit>
Edit2: perhaps I should clarify that I'm not a smoker, but was raised by one.

Yes. "Propaganda" is the reason smoking is viewed negatively.GodWood wrote...
It's amazing how smoking is viewed so negatively nowadays.
I wonder if with enough propaganda could drinking alcohol incite the same negative reaction.
I don't know how it is in other countries but in mine all smoking ads have the message "Smoking is bad and you should feel bad" and all cigarette packets have labels saying "Smoking: You're murdering your kids" coupled with a picture of an icky foot or something.
And just to clarify: I am not a smoker and would happily live in a world without it.
Well speaking only from my own experiences...my mother died from cancer complications due to smoking. My mother in-law can't breathe without assistance due to the same. And thanks to second hand smoke growing up from both my parents I have extremely diminished lung capacity even though I've never smoked at all.
So those ads seem right on target to me.

But smoking, name one good thing smoking does to out weight all it's negative effects. Nothing, nothing at all. There is no benefit, only consquence.
Now do the same for over eating.
What is the purpose of this? Over eating is also stupid and disgusting with no benefit.
Here you go: But over eating, name one good thing over eating does to out weight all it's negative effects. Nothing, nothing at all. There is no benefit, only consquence.
I don't know the purpose of your response. Do you assume I'm a fat bastard that pokes at other peoples problems to shy away from my own? That's not the case.
So what is the point of this discussion, then?GodWood wrote...

Pumped that bastard full of nicotine as soon as I could and I sure as hell don't regret it.
That's not a good thing. Your giving an addict something to calm them down and shut them up. You can do the same thing with any other drug addict.

I believe I was making an observation on how drinking is socially acceptable but smoking is condemned.
Can't remember what your point was.
And I probably would.Computer_God91 wrote...

Right. I'm a smoker, and I'll admit, it is not a healthy habit. Yet, given my family-history of smokers, and eventually dying between 80-90 due to old age, I'll take my chances and state bluntly; When I smoke, I'm having a good time, it helps me blow some steam ( Both literally and metaphorical ).. So why not?
We have free-will. You should respect some one's decision, as long as it doesn't interfere with your life, and given that very few public-places are open to smoking.. What's the big fuss?

id love playing with a big joint hanging out of sheps mouth. i mean thats exactly how i play the game, so why not my character too?
really tho id like to do red sand in the game, or see what red sand is all about.
Ok lets just cross the border and ask why cant you use drugs in the game?
Create a damaged and a weak character who got into a position where he's the only one who can save the universe, you have to remember for example my renegade shep was from earth and was in a gang, god knows what he doing when he was young, and he only got where he is because he is good at being a soldier.......and he has strong biotic abilities, just imagine (i use this word a lot) a biotic on drug like coke, damn.
In game you could take a hit for quick massive boost in power, in exchange for big cumulative debuff when it wears off.
Now please present your arguments, dont flame, i am aware why it would be bad to show this to a kid...............you known what this game should'nt be played by little kids anyway so f**k it go in heavy, if there was a deadly race of sentient living ships about to destroy all life in the galaxy, i would find some little time for drugs, sex and other fun.

Maybe because smoking is more harmful than drinking.
Tell that to Grandma whose son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren were killed by a drunk driver on their way to grandma's house for <insert special event/holiday here>.
Just saying, drinking and smoking are equally bad.

One can cite personal example until the cows come home, but the very biology and chemistry of smoking is more harmful than drinking.
Am I getting drawn into this? must...stop...resist...
