Maybe because smoking is more harmful than drinking.
Tell that to Grandma whose son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren were killed by a drunk driver on their way to grandma's house for <insert special event here>.
Just saying, drinking and smoking are equally bad.

Shepard just strikes me as someone who wouldn't smoke.
One can cite personal example until the cows come home, but the very biology and chemistry of smoking is more harmful than drinking.
Am I getting drawn into this? must...stop...resist...
Resistance is futile sry sry i had to:D

I did like how in ME I could buy revelations though why not the whole bible I don't know and it should've allowed us to read it not just give us a codex entry.

Why not let Shepard and Liara enjoy a good Cuban together ... cigar... get your minds out of the gutter.
That would be epic. I loved the cigar scene in Starcraft 2.

I agree with you, the biology and chemistry of smoking is more harmful. I never said it wasn't, but there are exceptions to everything. In some circumstances drinking is a 1000 times more deadly than smoking because death can be instant instead of being drawn out over decades. Hmmm ... on the other hand I've heard of some retard trying to smoke in a high oxygen environment ... that didn't end well.

See I thought this would be about the morality of smoking or how dare TIM smoke but OP asks should shep be able to smoke for rp purposes? Um....odd question I suppose so long as shep is made to buy cigarettes at some specialty store in order to open up the animation option why not? This way buying the cigarettes would then be like dancing you have to actually go to the place to make the animation occur in this case your inventory keeps the cigarettes in there all game the player just goes into inventory and selects the icon shep will then start smoking for a while and if say he's in the presidium c-sec might come up to him as a funny easter egg if the player makes shep smoke 2 - 5 times consecutively. Another funny moment would happen if you use them on omega a batarian or so would come up to shep and ask to have one.

Nice, i made it all kinda dark (well I mostly play evil or at least renegade chars), but why not have it and have some fun with it, good job.

No. No one smokes in the 23rd century. It's considered a barbaric activity.
(actually it's a lie, I remember seeing a Volus smoking somewhere...)

Unless it is present in the codex in-game the information to me is irrelevent. If it's not part of the actual gameing series it has nothing of use to me. Sorry I don't read.

At Bioware= Ok guys we can either put resources into letting Shepard have the option to smoke when players can easily just pretend that their shep smokes or add another conversation with a squad member.
That's why.
Yes and we can just turn off the game, play some music and make our own story............getting high while doing so is also an option, just saying

If you had read the first page, Chris already confims this to be true.

We have free-will. You should respect some one's decision, as long as it doesn't interfere with your life, and given that very few public-places are open to smoking.. What's the big fuss?
I don't know what country you live in but in mine (america) people can smoke wherever they want outside and in a few buildings. When I'm forced to breathe the air your actively polluting, that is interfering with my life and health I want nothing more then to take your cigarette, put it out, and punch you in the mouth. I say if you want to slowly kill yourself do it in your own house where I don't have to die with you because second hand smoke is apparently worse then sucking on that cigarette. Not to mention that cigarette smoke smells bad and gives me really bad headaches. So if my behavior toward it seems harsh that's why.
