I am glad Shepard doesn't smoke. It's a disgusting and unattractive habit, imo--healthy or not. Gross.

I think thats my point, i'd like the option of making my shep more of a real person, and many people use alcohol, cigarettes and more, for many different purposes.

Because you cant take life too seriously no matter what, like i sayd to my friend while we were playing paintball, and i light up a cigarette, if you are in a war and dont have time for a single smoke, why fight?

I don’t think drinking or smoking adds any realism to a video game character. TIM smokes, but I don’t see that as a character trait of his. I see it as a gross habit that leaves one smelling like an ashtray. I think TIM has a strong enough presence and personality that if his character didn’t smoke, we wouldn’t lose any realism or representation of his being.

I think making someone seem more real would fall upon emotions, ideals, how they react to stimuli, etc. Making a character smoke, drink, go to the bathroom or eat doesn’t add character, it’s just a façade--something to do to make him seem ordinary, not human.

Why? This would be a pointless addition.

Also, T.I.M. smokes.

Yeah but the smoking can represent a lot of things that define the character, and you cant talk about all of it or you would just bore the player, as far the drinking goes there isn't that much in the game too, yeah you can have a shot........that makes you dizzy for a few seconds but it doesn't affect the way your characters acts or talks, how about the option of having a flask at all times and siping from it to get yourself a buzz, how badass would shepard have to be to fight the geth, saren, collectors, reapers and many more while being totally wasted.
Sure in the first game you are part of the alliance military so its hard to imagine him drinking (although he would not be the first soldier to start drinking), but in the second, why not, he's pretty much a mercenary hired to do the hardest job in the galaxy, and if he wanted he could just say I had enough im going to drink and gamble (and more) away my 100k credits i have left, see ya.
So in a nutshell how could someone whose job is so hard stay strong and not try and make his life better using the easy way?

And "I think I have seen someone smoking"? Really? Have you forgotten The Illusive Man already? ;)

No, he/she suddenly turned gay, instead. :bandit:

Whats with all the Illusive Man, looks like he has a lot of fans and haters, i would call him a very simple one note character, i only read the comic book he was in so i dont have all the details, but so far he didn't really plan anything spectacular, and always hoped someone would do the job for him, i mean he looks like one lazy SOB, i hope that changes in me3, and yeah the fact that he smokes doesnt make him more interesting, thats my point, if you have a character that smokes/drinks make it a part of his story/mood/actions.

If you want a game where the pc smokes (A LOT), play Metal Gear Solid 4. It's in every load screen.

then don't smoke? TIM already smokes and drinks, that elcor smokes, and Garrus smokes when you're not looking (don't believe me? just wait outside of his room for a few hours and run in, you might be able to catch him smoking while he is supposed to be calibrating)

The feeling is mutual. Smokers dislike it when people harp on their life decisions. What are you, their (my?) mom?

In a game, that is rated mature, has blue side boob and exploding children - I don't think smoking will impact it's image that much.

That being said - I think it would be kind of an unnecessary addition. Maybe throw in a pack like the Fornax magazine but having a specific scene. Naaah. Smoking a bogey isn't like taking a swig.

There seems to be this misperception that one will get asthma or cancer if someone is smoking around them or even if they have a single cigarette. Folks, this is not the case. You have to be around it for a long time - I'm talking like a decade. Someone just doesn't wake up with cancer or asthma because the guy next to them waiting for the cross signal happened to have a lit cigarette.

QFT.  This was my first thought as well.  While smoking may be out of character for Shepard apparently homosexual sex is not.

Well there isn't much of that in the game too. You cant try to "persuade" someone in your squad (or any npc really)
who is strait to go to bed with you if you are same sex.

First of all, ME cigarettes aren't bad for you and if anyone playing ME is influenced to start smoking because Shepard does it, stop playing Mass Effect then that's your parents own damn fault for buying their middle schooler Mass Effect.
I don't smoke either (flaming cancer sticks I like to say) but equating not smoking to good? Does smoking show some inherent flaw in virtue? (stops as not to invoke godwin)
