I'm trying to play the BG saga again, but it's a bit hard for me as I know so many spoilers, specially because I played a good chunk of BG2 until I decided to pick BG1.

Today I started BG1 again (which I don't know much spoilers, except the ending) and I decided to go with a good/neutral aligned party. Right in the beginning of BG1 I can pick up Xzar and Montaron, who ask to take them to Nashkal. Both characters are evil and do not get along with Jaheira and Khalid. Also, judging from the dialogue that I had with Xzar and the reaction from Jaheira in BG2, it feels like betrayed me in BG1 or something like that.

So, based on this, my plan was to take all these 4 characters to Nashkal and see if something special would happen. I entered the city, talked with a few NPCs and headed to the mines. I talked with a NPC who gave me a pass and inside of the mines I talked with two miners. So far I didn't see anything that made me think that I should have taken Xzar and Montaron there, so I saved the game and quit.

Based on this, here is my first question:
- Do I get a special dialogue if I take Xzar and Montaron to the ending of this part or can I simply take two different NPCs?

My second question is still related to NPCs. I'm aware that the dialogue between them in BG1 is almost non-existant, but I'm not sure how this affects the role they take in the story.
- Are there sidequests for the NPCs? If so, is there a list of NPCs that don't have sidequests?

For example: I know that Edwin asks for my help right when I meet him, but does he have other quests in case he joins my group?

If possible, try to give 'low-spoilerish' answers. Thanks for the attention.

They are regular NPCs, completely equal to Khalid and whats her name.

Some NPCs will have personal quests, but these quests are nothing like their BG2 counterparts. So for example, Safana is a Thief you encounter along the coast somewhere and has a quest to look for treasure in a cave. Edwin's quest is to look for Dynaheir, as is Minsc's quest, although for very different reasons.
Jaheira and Khalid and Xzar and Montaron's quest is the same which is to investigate the mines and the disturbances along the sword coast. Both are normal NPCs, no joinable NPCs in the game betray you. Although J and K and X and M are somewhat enemies, so eventually they will come to blows if you keep them together long enough.
There are a lot of rivalries amongst the NPCs, such as a dark elf you may remember from BG2 and an elven ranger. A man hating Amazonian warrior and a chauvinistic bard. And of course the Edwin, Dynaheir, Minsc trio will cause problems - note that it is possible to keep all three in your group.

You should get special dialogue for taking J and K and X and M along to the mines since it's their personal quest. They may comment on things here and there as the story progresses since they're both a little involved in the events happening along the sword coast. Although I'm not sure, haven't played vanilla BG in ages, always play Tutu with banter packs and such.

All npcs fall into one of three categories;
  • Good, the rangers, paladin & even a thief... these guys will rejoice in watching your rep climb above 15.
  • Neutral, the druids a bard & cleric... they are happy with 10 rep but will leave a true child of the light.
  • Evil, the best (strongest) mage, bard and clerics... any rep above 12 is asking for trouble.

If you don't want them in your party, kick them out. No party member in BG/TotSC actually matters, and they won't care about much of anything (if they do, it will be before they join the party).

You're not really going to see anything special having Xzar or Montaron in the party in Nashkel (the mayor has dialogue for them, but I think Khalid and Jaheira take precedence). I don't recall anything at all beyond that (the only thing you get is that they'll no longer nag you once you've solved the trouble at the mines).

Thanks for the answers.

I just cleared the Nashkel Mines and I didn't get any special dialogue with Xzar or Montaron. The only reference to any NPC so far was when the mayor spotted Jaheira in Nashkal, as devSin mentioned. If there was a dialog with Xzar/Montaron there, it got overridden.

I was hoping that I would see at least one or two dialogue lines with each NPC by this point, but nothing so far. Considering that I just found Xan, I guess that I'm gonna kick out Xzar and Montaron, and then replace him later with other NPCs.

Based in the beginning of BG2 story, I guess that the 'canon party' with good alignment would be Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc and Dynaheir, so I probably will stick with them.

Lots of dialogue between NPC's (banters) like in BG2 wasn't implemented yet in BG1. There's a mod though, that adds bantering to BG1 called NPC1-project, but you need to have BG Tutu installed (running BG1 in the BG2 engine).

For talks between a particular NPC and your PC, you have to look for mods that install Friendship paths. You can find some projects on http://www.pocketplane.net/tutumods, with among other mods a Friendship path for Xan, there's  one for Coran at Gibberlings3 and there's one for Ajantis to be find on Rosenranken, a german modding community, but the mod is in English.

I don’t normally take these two but from memory it should be impossible to talk Marl (a drunk whom picks a fight with you in Beregost) down with them in your party.

I always thought there was a lot hinted at which they never finished. Who even ARE Xzar and Monty? I think they have pretty big backstories which you only ever get glimpses of.

Actually, I kind of like the fact that there are questions which might never be answered. However, I think a lot of that is because once they join your party, the NPCs are basically just extra characters to move around, unless (a) they leave because you didn't do their joining quest in time or (B) they fight with someone else in the party. You can't talk to them and they never talk to you again, really. Sad.

You need the mod that ussnorway suggested. BG1 is a very much less satisfying game without it.

The NPC Project has excellent writing and makes BG1 play like BG2 for dialogue and NPC character development. There is a lot written for Xzar and Monty with Jaheira and Khalid like you were looking for, and some extra scripting that causes Monty to attack certain people in certain places whether you want him to or not. The guy is a murderer, after all.

I have another question. I just cleared Durlag's Tower and I'm still carrying all the runes that I had to use there. Can I just throw them away or is there any purpose in keeping them?

Apart from roleplaying reasons (I usually store them somewhere as a souvenir, or leave them in a container in the upper levels of the tower itself), no.

Neutrals don't leave because of high rep. They will WHINE incessently about your high rep, but never to the point of departing. They will leave if it gets too low, however. Kind of a double standard, but there you go. Because of that, if I have a neutral character, I'll frequently just shadowkeeper them to good just to shut them up, as it has no real impact on gameplay.

As for Xzar and Monty, they will fight with Khalid and Jaheira after a while. In addition to the alignment conflicts, the organizations that each grouping is a member of are mortal enemies. It's like putting Yankee and Red Sox fans together.

They don't necessarily fight. If your charisma is high enough, they leave without fighting. That is a pain as they take their equipment with them. Far better to have a fight and get the equipment back.

There is a mod (Actually more than one) that keeps NPCs happy whatever your reputation.
