Ehhh...Thedas doesn't have as much gender equality as you might think, to the point that I wonder why Bioware bothers with the 'Males and Females are represented equally in (almost) all organisations' notation in character creation.
Well, there are some cultural differences, but most of Thedas embraces gender equality.
You cite organizations like the Silent Sisters, but that order was formed centuries ago. Dwarven culture has changed since then to allow for women to become warriors (provided they are part of the appropriate caste).
I never claimed the culture hadn't changed since then. Yet the organisation still exists -- and do you think they allow men to join?
I wouldn't put much stock in what Arl Howe says. The man is grasping for whatever insult he can come up with.
Well, if I had the Dragon Age books here I'd quote Maric (or was it Loghain?) ruminating on Rowan being a warrior and that female warriors are not very common. Also that other countries, like Orlais and Antiva, look upon the custom of allowing women to be warriors as part of Ferelden's barbaric roots. All that points towards the rest of Thedas not being on the same page as Ferelden where gender roles are concerned (not that this is a bad thing).
Fewer women serving as warriors in general.
Where the Wardens are concerned, I don't think it's that simple.
Women are equal to men under the Qun. But both genders are suited to specific roles. For a woman to be a warrior is as ridiculous as a man serving as a merchant.
You're missing the point, I think, which is that despite their equality under the qun, neither gender is represented equally in any given role. They are gender exclusive. A Fereldan, man or woman, can take whatever job they like, theoretically. A man or woman under the qun cannot.
