So with two dlcs I haven't played I'm going to give Dragon Age II another playthrough. I tinkered around with the other romance options but I am always drawn back to Merrill. To mix my experience a little up this time it should be a rivalmance.

But this could be tricky. The thing is that my warrior was always meant to be pro templar (hence the specialization), and use the diplomatic dialogue options. Roleplaywise he would be a pious Maker-worshipper with a strong opinion against bloodmages and a disgust of the Qunari. Yeah some kind of love/hate romance.

I am planning to have Merrill always in group and so my question is:

1) Is it possible to max rivalry with this dialogue approach?
2) Will Merrill stay true at the end of Act III if I sign with the Templars?

Somewhere in the wiki I read that refusing to give Merrill the tool to fix her mirror will have a huge impact on the rivalrymeter. If someone can verify this it would be nice.

Looking forward to your answers and ty in advance.

I haven't done much Merrill, but not giving her the carving tool give her a major boost in the other direction - rivalry. I had her a little under less halfway to friendship and I swear that the friendship got completely converted to rivalry (+125 rivalry or something). So yes it is a boost in rivalry.

And if you are anti-mage and has Merrill along it will net rivalry as well.

Refusing Merrill the tool will result in any existing Friendship turning into Rivalry, as well as +15 to rivalry. Though this doesn't really help if you're near the middle beforehand.

Merrill is generally easy to rival since you get +10 rivalry for every Evil Tome you destroy with her in the party, so you should be OK. Particularly if you're doing pro-Templar things

With full rivalry and her quests done, she'll stick by you. Not sure what the minimum requirements are.

If you have +95 Friendship with Merrill when you refuse to give her the knife, you'll get +175 Rivalry for refusing to give her the knife. Specifically, if you're at X Friendship before you refuse the knife, you will be at (X-15) Rivalry after. Not (X+15) like Wulfram seems to imply (If it were it'd be too easy).

Then destroy 2 Evil Tomes in front of her and BAM. Locked in Rivalry without saying a single mean word to her.

For me Rivalmanced Merrill is waaaay hotter than Friendmanced Merrill. And yes, you can go pro-Templar at the end whether you Friendmance or Rivalmance. She'll stick by you either way as long as she's locked at 100.

Merrill is one of the easiest companions to lock at either 100 Rivalry or 100 Friendship due to the knife formula. Plus she's a powerhouse and you should take her on most missions.

You're right, sorry

Okay thanks folks. With your insight it looks quite promising for me. If you will excuse me I have to plan my Templar build.

Be sure to not cap Friendship before refusing the tool, otherwise you'll be trapped on friendship.

As it's already been stated, Merrill is one of the easiest characters to push one direction or the other in terms of Friendship/Rivarly. In act 1, I would suggest starting by having her around whenever you're doing quests such as Warward Son and Acts of Mercy. I'm going to assume that with your character, you'll be siding with the templars on both quests.

In my opinion, I think you'll be in for a treat romancing Merrill on the rival path. She's much cuter when she gets angry and her rivalry dialogue is much snappier. I also think that her rivalry path offers better character development than friendship.

If you party with Merrill, Fenris and Anders, you can pick all the anti-mage, pro-templar dialogues and get +Rivalry with the mages and +Friendship with Fenris at the same time. Win-win!

Too bad this is one of the most irritating parties to have

It depends where you go though, there are many options that both Fenris and Anders agree on when it comes to Merrill.

Not to mention rather depressing. I had them as my team in my first playthrough, and it wasn't half as much fun as bringing Merrill with Isabela and Varric/Aveline the second time around.

The only rivalmance option I find unrealistic involves Anders and siding with the templars

Not really, the whole point of Rivalry is realizing that Anders is basically just a mouthpiece for Justice. The fact that he'd side with you with the Templars makes perfect sense because, hey, it's the only way to contain the situation he caused, or let Justice win and trigger a war with no real winners and massive loss of life.

That said, the dialogue you get from him if you side with the Mages and rivalmanced him makes no freakin sense, because it's the same dialogue you get if you friendmanced him.
