The Protheans left remnants because they forsaw an attack against them. They hid a myriad of particles that were dropped into vials, and then atomized. These hidden particles can only be found Shep, or the will of the Protheans. They are scattered, and will grant the many peace in the many battles that were to come. These "coins" may have more than one effect. Ranging from slowing the tides, to sheilding the ally.

I think this is stretching a little too close to magic if you're talking about coins. Perhaps a miniature disc the Protheans created that slips into an omni-tool? But, alas, that would make a lot of people **** because the Protheans may or may not have had omni-tools.
