I know this has been asked in many different ways and many times. Still after obsessively searching the internet and these forums I am very unclear about how Dragon Age is developing in terms of story and world continuity.
I thoroughly enjoyed all the games and expansions of this franchise. Really! But I do find that there remains a certain unclarity about what we players can maybe expect from Bioware when it comes to how you desire us to invest our time in creating our own story. There are so many loose ends story wise, especially when it comes to Origins and how important our choices are/can be; How our choices will affect the future of the story. First of all, this is ok with me, I just feel it would be interesting to get more information.. It is also important for me to add that I don't feel an obsessive attachment to my characters. In fact, I like the idea of playing a new protagonist for each Dragon Age game. But should I be worried about making the wrong choices? Because already when I decied to do the Ultimate Sacrifice -- very pleased with that choice when it was limited only to the storyline of Origins -- but confused and unsure of my choice when I realized that choice can't be transferred through Awakenings and on to Dragon Age 2 in a "satisfying" way. It is not enough for me to ressurect my Warden in Awakenings and then have Dragon Age 2 fix it so that my Warden actually wasn't ressurected. It makes me feel like I am not getting everything out of the game. I feel like I am faking the story I created through my choices. In the sense that I don't want to transfer my saves and instead just play the games as completely seperate experiences. Which is still a great experience though! DA2 was super involving, but this uncertainty in terms of choice importance defeats the purpose of importing saves for me. I also wonder when it was said (by Mike Laidlaw on these forums I think) that it is unlikely we will play the Warden or Hawke again but that it is possible they turn up in a cameo. Even that possible cameo would not be important plot wise, taking the choice of the Ultimate Sacrifice feels like loosing out on a personal "psychological" connection between the game and my subjective shaping of the story through my choices; In the sense that if I loose out on those kind of cameos (that involve all our highly subjective and individual Wardens or Hawkes, with their specific choices) I might as well play the games without importing and as seperate experiences; which is fine with me if that is how you (the developers) desire us to approach the situation. Would the developers agree with me on this? Or are you confident that if I just decide to transfer my Origins save without an awakening continuation, into Dragon Age 2 and then further to a possible Dragon Age 3, that, that would ultimately not have a large impact on my game experience? The Dark Ritual or Ultimate Sacrifice has been called the single biggest choice in Origins, but what is its importance beyond the limits of Origin as a contained story? Makes me also wonder about the importance of choices in DA2. I don't expect you to tell me what is going to happen in future stories, I am just asking you to give me some clarity in how you yourselves (the developers) would approach this situation as a player.
This is not criticism, and not disapointment. I guess I am asking for advice and the personal opinions of Bioware's developers. To me Dragon Age is an RPG, a fantastic RPG about the characters and their choices in a complicated world and the consequences of those character's choices are fascinating to see unfold. I know I can't expect or demand an answer about what will happen in the future. But I would love to just hear a little bit about the dev teams philosophy concerning these things. And again, I just want to say, I loved the games, I don't think you did anything wrong in the sense of not living up to the fans expectations or any of that sort of thing. I would just like to receive some clarity about the philosophy and goal of save imports and story/world continuation.
Thank you!
