But seriously, chimpanzees are not the same as an AI machine. Everyone knows how dangerous an AI can become; no organic poses the same kind of threat.

Adolf Hitler says hi. And the entire human history as well. We can pose just as big threat to each other as machines.

Um, no. The Quarians didn't know the full capabilities of the Geth. For all they knew, the Geth could have caused a technological apocalypse, like what almost happened in Overlord.

What if they are?  What if the entire quarian race collectively issues history's biggest mea culpa?  So what?

How should the geth respond to that?  "Well, they said they were sorry and wrote us a lovely card.  Allright let's rip the heart of our civilization out and hand it to them on a silver platter (it really was a lovely card)!"

No, I agree with you. They could give them the planet, but under the condition Quarians get the resources and everything else elsewhere and do 99% of the rebuilt work themselves. Frankly, it ain't Geth's fault either Quarians were dumb enough to remain on the ships, get their immune systems fawked up and everything else instead of just settling on a new world/new system and rebuilding their civilization there, along with securing resources (for rebuilt efforts and future). In that case, eventually reclaimed Rannoch would be pretty much standard easy 'colonization project' for them like other races do, they wouldn't need to rebuilt their entire civilization from scratch, they would have the resources and whatnot.

The thing is, in the Mass Effect Age, a civilization's sphere of influence extends well beyond the planet it's on. The starsystem arguably becomes the minimum size for any truly independent society. All the more so in the case of the quarians and geth where the wisdom of the old adage "good fences make good neighbors" should be more than obvious.

In other words, asking the quarians and geth to share the same starsystem is a system designed to fail.

Not to mention each side's legitimate military concerns.  For the geth those concerns would center around allowing the quarians to set up an armed camp right in their midst.  And for the quarians those concerns would focus on being surrounded on all sides by a vastly superior traditional enemy.  As before, it's a system designed to fail.

If the Geth really wanted peace, one would have thought they'd tell people about it. Rather than trolling the extranet and killing anyone who came near them.

Quarians wanted to kill Geth because they became self aware and they started representing threat to them.
Anyone with brains would do it, "if you are going to create a war weapon or monster, you better know how to shut it down".

Lol please, if we make chimpanzes self-aware tomorrow, can we just wipe them out all because "they may pose a threat to us?"

No, ethically speaking we shouldn't, but it would be the better course of action. Can't have those maniacs blowing everything up. Damn them all to hell!

They also realized they had created a sapient species which meant they were slavers and if the Council found out they'd be in serious trouble, amongst other things.

So if we ever discover another intelligent race, one that can also fly for example (without technology), are we allowed to wipe them out "just in case"? After all we don't know them and if and/or what kind of a moral system they represent, not to mention natual advantage (being able to fly) over our species.

I admit I did not read anything other than the thread title, but I think you posed that question in reverse. It's the Quarians you need to worry about. Geth don't lie or deceive. If Legion said they're open to peace if the statistical opportunity presents itself I'm taking the robot on it's word.

What exactly is going to keep a robot from lying? If statistically the outcome to lying is preferable to the outcome of being honest, a machine will lie 100 out of 100 times.

"Geth do not infiltrate." - Legion, Geth Infiltrator

I'm not sure if you're being witty, sarcastic, or honest. But I'm sure Geth supporters will easily do away with this argument by pointing out that Infiltrator is just title appointed to the sum of his skills.

To which I'll just say this:
"Geth do not infiltrate."
Commencing Legion loyalty mission.

Well to be fair, organics shoot Geth on sight.

So sending Geth diplomats is just a waste of ships and platforms.

The Geth are also the 'perfect liars', as emotionless machines they would be immensely skilled at lying without being detected. What's more is that, without moral compass or alike, there is only a single thing that factors into deciding between telling the truth or a lie: "Which is more beneficial?".
The Geth might well agree to peace only because it would give them a better position to start war from. That's a frightening thought.

Then why don't they lie?

"Why did you use my armour?"
"...there was a hole."
"But why did you pick THAT specific piece of armor to repair yourself with?"
"...no data available."

They could have lied there. Lying would have been 'beneficial' as it Shepard would have more trust in them (because as far as s/he knows, they are telling the truth).

They/them = Legion, because he is all Geth.

Other than Legion mentioning that they don't "occupy" the Quarian homeworld but rather maintain it like a war memorial, I thought the above was one of the more interesting discussions with Legion.  There was almost a hint of emotion in the way he/it/they says, "..no data available."

I agree.

My disguist to the Quarians goes as far back as Mass Effect 1. Just for the way they inslaved "conscious" beings.
If I am given the choice Quarians will be history. Much like how Tali and Williams have been added to my history books.

I remember talking to Tali in ME1 and thinking to myself "wow your showing so much hatred for the actions of a race when your race was planning on doing the same damn thing! "

In ME2 when visiting the migrant fleet and talking to leaders I got the same feeling like the Quarians are "almost" incapable of taking responsiblity for their actions against the Geth and for contining hostile actions!

They didn't really create a sapient species though. They created VI driven robots that became sentient. I doubt the Council would have punished them for being slavers in such a unique situation.

As for the geth, the real question is whether we should help protect their megastructure for help in the war, or allow it to be destroyed so we can invite them to Earth.

What are you talking about? That has nothing to do with this situation. An AI could cause a technological apocalypse destroying all advanced organic life. Can a flying intelligent species pose that great of a threat?

No.

"Geth do not intentionally infiltrate"

Evidently the Geth are entirely capable of posting on the extranet. If the Geth wanted the message out that they want peace, they could have very easily done that.

And? Who cares? They've lost their right to order Geth around the moment Geth became self-aware. They didn't plan it? That doesn't give them to right to enslave another self-aware beings.

The Council did punish them though, the Quarians lost their embassy on the Citadel after it all came out.

That's very bigot, barbaric and ignorant response.

Please don't talk about this subjects ever again.

Well here's some news for you.

Open-mindness =/= Having no strong opinion.

Civilized =/= Untouched by violence.

Knowledge =/= Indecisiveness.

The Geth killing the Quarians is tyrannicide. You may not endorse that because you're an unconditional pacifist, or because you like the Quarians for some personal reasons (that I have no interest in knowing). But calling other people names merely shows your own insecurity, and telling others to shut up simply reveals that you're not confident enough in your own arguments.

Maybe not. Can US army wipe out Eskimos? Hell to the yes. Could we one day discover a race that surpasses us technologically in every way? Sure. Will we have the right to "kill 'em all just in case" only because they theoretically could destory us? Nope.

No.

Not to mention, Geth were created to serve as V.I and yes they do pose bigger threat they are machines and they have no limit to their knowledge and their tech.

The Quarians create VI driven robots for labor and domestic purposes. They are not sapient.

By linking together, these VI driven robots gain intelligence and become more proficient.

Eventually, the VI driven robots achieve sapience, becoming a fully-fledged AI that has the potential to devastate the galaxy.

The Quarians try to eliminate the threat, but fail.

That is the story of the Quarians and the Geth. Where do the Quarians show any sign of being evil or what not? They accidentally create an emormous threat to galactic security and try to make amends by destroying the threat.

Who makes diplomacy over internet? OK in this case, extranet.

Only thing that would happen is that it's gonna be shrug off as someone is trolling.

Plus, Geth probably either didn't think about that or though it's pretty dumb idea.
