I played Misery Stone recently but was very disappointed in the easy combat, lack of depth, few puzzles (though the last one with the 4 doors was rather decent)  and a major immersion breaking bug.  Luckily, I also recently played MOTB for the first time & it restored my faith that there are excellent  NWN2 adventures to be had.  Are there any other NWN2 modules out there that approach the depth & sense of challenge of the best official campaigns?  I like role-playing, deadly tricks & traps, good level design, some smart but not impossible & obscure puzzles, unconventional ideas, & difficult or at least decent combat.  I played many NWN1 modules over the years, some of them quite excellent,  and was looking for something similar in NWN2 content.  Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

White plume mountain might well fit the bill though that is party play I believe.

Otherwise The Wizards Apprentice presents some interesting play experiences and some good combat.

My own modules have had comments that the combat is balanced on the hard side but they lack you tricks/traps requirement.

Combat in Islander is more... strategic than usual. Story, etc is good too.

Strategic, or tactical?

Whatever, aren't both correct? I'm not the best to judge which English word defines it better.

I'm playing through Harp and Chrysanthemum at the moment. So far it seems to have many of the characteristics you're looking for.

Islander is both strategic and tactical. In each individual fight you must use appropriate tactics or you will find yourself reloading a lot. You must also use appropriate strategies to outfit your party, choose who goes in your party, and how to defeat your opponents to best conserve resources.

I also recommend PJ156's series beginning with Sheep and Stone. Roleplay is very good as is area design and plot. It is light on puzzles and traps, but the combat is definitely challenging and will keep you on your toes. He is preparing to release the 5th installment, so you will have hours of play time which will take you to 9th or 10th level.

Last of the Danaan also is excellent. Fantastic plot and action with challenging combat that requires use of tactics.

Trinity is very good and I would very much recommend it.

Those are all great modules, and there are many, many more.

As far as puzzles and unconventional ideas go, the most clear example is probably the Dark Waters trilogy.

Trinity is difficult and unconventional.

Path of Evil is just awesome according to me.

Path of Evil was not big on puzzles unless you considered the main plotline one because there were few directions on what to do. Its mostly difficult if you try to complete things at lower levels (though the Nag Hammadi and the killer dungeon areas get stupid hard if you go at a high enough level) Do things relatively as expected (you would be level 18 or so) and it shouldn't be too difficult, try to beat it at level 14 or less and it can be painful, I did manage once at level 13 while testing.

On the other hand, I highly recommend Trinity as it offers about everything op wants.

MotB had deadly trick and traps and difficult combat? Evidently we played different versions my friend.

Not to toot my own horn as I have yet to decide if it was a sucess or not but Islander has a few people complaining that it's combat is too hard with the rest saying they loved the challenge level and requirement for tactics.

Want to play it click it below. I'll give you one warning now: do not expect to outheal everything ala every other nwn experience you've had. There is not infinite potions #1, and you cant chug them fast enough anyway.

Islander is definitely one of the most challenging mods combat-wise, if that's your main concern I'd try that first. One of my favorites that wasn't mentioned yet is Edinmoor.

If you've played through a mod you otherwise liked but wish the combat was harder for subsequent play-throughs, I heartily recommend The Fred's XP Slider (http://nwvault.ign.c...I.Detail&id=146). Alongside adjusting your starting level it's a great way to make any mod more challenging. For example I played Misery Stone starting at level 3 or 4 (can't remember exactly) and set the scale very low and I had so much more fun than the first time starting at the recommended level.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. I'll be checking some of them out. NWN1 modules provided some of my all-time favorite CRPG gaming memories, and I'm trying to recapture some of that through NWN2 mods. The Danaan series seems particularly innovative. Right now I'm playing MOW but I think I f**ked up by choosing a rogue but I'm already past mid-game & I'll either abandon and start a new fan module or continue to slog through feeling underpowered (the last part of the Duergar dungeon is kicking my ass, and I wasted a whole bunch of magic wands by neglecting to to turn off the"Use Magic Device" AI with TonyK's mod), but I'll give it one more go, then dig into some of these mods mentioned here.
