Alright, sorry if this is the wrong place, but I don't have much time and I need this to get noticed so...

Let's begin.

I regretably suffered the loss of my faithful gaming laptop recently and have been looking into a way to regain my lost gaming prowess. I'm currently using a somewhat outdated but still reliable tower with a Nvidia 9400 GT graphics card. Not the greatest, I know, but it does it's job.

After pestering my parents for quite a bit, I convinced them to let me upgrade the 9400 to something better, preferably something much better ( I can just barely run ME2 on this thing, and most other games I've bought won't work at all).

The problem though, is I've only been given today to find a suitable replacement. At the risk of sounding ungrateful, some more notice would've been nice, but I'll take what I can get.

The second problem is I'm fairly certain this is coming out of my bank account, and, being an unemployed fifteen-year-old who is looking to go to a decent college, I'd like to spend as little of that money as possible.

So yeah, if anybody knows any average to high-end graphics cards that I ought to look into, please help! I can scour newegg.com or sites like it for deals, but I may need some direction first. @_@

Oh, and here's my system specs in case you need to know:

Graphics card: Nvidia 9400 GT

Processor: Intel Xeon 5150 @ 2.66GHz

OS: Windows XP (SP3), although I can upgrade to Windows 7 if possible.

____________________________________________________________

TL;DR:
I need a decent new graphics card but need help in picking the right one.

P.S.
A friend of mine recently got a Geforce GTX 465 for under $200 and is suggesting I look into it. I will, but any opinions on that one is appreciated as well. ;)

P.P.S.
My old laptop had a Geforce GTX 260m that was moderately good. Is that just for laptops, or is it appropriate for towers as well? If so, how does it stack up to others?

Thanks in advance for the help everyone! Hope to be playing ME3 alongside you all! :)

I'm no expert at GPUs and such, but I have a GTX 460 1GB which I am quite happy with. Not a monster card, exactly, but it supports DX11 and runs most games smoothly at high settings (I play with 1920*1080 resolution, which drags the performance down a notch). Plus it's cheap.

Much appreciated. :)

I think I've found one better, though. :?

On newegg.com your card is $190.

For $5 less, I can get the GTX 560, which is supposedly very good. I think I'll look a bit more into that one, but it's looking good so far.

High End cards require High End POWER. The cost of a GTX 460 or GTX 560 isn't the end, since an upgraded power supply is part of the deal. AMD (Medium Quality) cards suck less power than Geforce cards and can usually run on more ordinary stock power supplies. The HD 6670 would be such a card, as would last year's HD 5670.

Oh well yeah, I knew as much. My afformentioned friend had to buy an upgraded power supply as well, but he got one for around $10. Theives at Best Buy refused to sell one for under $100, so he got one off the internet. :wizard:

I don't think that'll be required though, and if it is I can just take it out of some Birthday money or something (not going to do much else with it anyways).

I did want to ask though, Gorath.

I've actually seen a post or two of yours regarding this sort of thing, and, seeing as you seem like you certainly know what you're talking about, was wondering if you'd give some input on the GTX 560. Regradless of other components I'll need, how do you think the actual card is?

Anyways I'm heavily considering the 560, though I'll give the HD 6670 a look as well.

Sorry if I sound like an idiot by the way, I'm fairly new to this sort of thing. @_@

Power-draw wise, the GTX 560 will require about 160W, while the HD 6670 will only require about 60 or 70W at max consumption, so there's a huge difference there. You might not have to upgrade your PSU with the HD 6670, but will definitely have to with the GTX 560.

Performance-wise, the GTX 560 will far out-perform the HD 6670, as long as you don't run into any driver problems with the GTX 560. Newere cards tend to choke on ME2 with the latest drivers, or at least function erratically when it comes to rendering the game correctly. Results are mixed, to say the least, and it might be as simple as running older (258.xx) drivers to compensate.

Price:  HD 6670 will be a LOT cheaper than a GTX 560 (with power supply? even more expensive).  Say, under a $100 versus over $200.  Big difference.  The GTX 560 will run a lot hotter too; hope you've got a good case and cooling system.

It takes too much time to research stuff like this to get good details.  I often labor weeks, and/or months, over a new GPU purchase, so you're getting the short-version.  Maybe Gorath Alpha will expand a bit soon...

Sorry if this is bumping a dead thread, but I thought I'd give an update.

I got the GTX 560 and it's amazing. Luckily, my computer had 558W capability, and the card required 500W, so I didn't need to buy a power supply.

Thanks for the help everyone, it's much appreciated. :)
