To run the installer agian, pleae run the setup" after i input the cd key =\\ im running vista i have a hard disk copy and digital says the same thing when i try either one any ideas? any and all help will be much appriciated guys ty much.

a. Is it the console version or the PC version? = PC
b. Media: physical disk or digital download = both, i have a hard disk copy and digital. i dont recall the vendor though =\\
2. System Details
a. Processor / Core count / Core Speed / Main RAM Amount = intel core 2 duo T9400 @ 2.53GHz
4GB of ram
b. Display Adapter / VRAM / Driver Version = ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 X2
c. Sound Adapter / Driver Version = Speakers (3- Logitech USB Speaker)
d. Operating System = Vista
e. Direct X Version = DirectX 10.0 (Mar2009) or later
3. Problem Details
a. When it comes to problem details, think about the five basic questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? Okay, so “Who?” doesn’t really apply here, but the others do.
b. What? installation cancels after i input the cd key
c. When? as stated as soon as i click the next button, the next window is the cancellation window with the following sentence "the installation of ME has been cancelled. To run the installer agian, pleae run the setup"
d. Where? during installation
e. Why? ^^^^^^
my apologies, i figured since my issue is not a in-game issue that the problem format for the forum wouldnt really be necessary since my issue isnt all that specific. anyways here is the info as requested hope, again any and all help is much appreciated guys [:

Are you running the installation with admin rights, and also in xp compatibility mode?

You may want to run a registry cleaner such as ccleaner to see if ME left some legacy entries when you took it out, which may be interfering with a reinstall.
Also are you trying to install off a disk, and is it a value game edition? IF you are trying to install off disk then try to reinstall from either Origins or whoever you bought the digital edition from.

Seeing as its the crappy Value Games Edition, looks like you will have to try the manual installation, as the VG disks tend to be low quality, and full of errors which can cause installation problems.
You will need:
1) access to the contents of the data directory (either off CD, download, temp files, etc)
2) WinRar or 7zip or any tool that can extract .rar files.
Steps:
1) Create a folder on your system somewhere. Default for the installer is "C:\\Program Files\\Mass Effect\\" or a games folder.
2) Open each .rar file in the utility chosen (WinRar for e.g.)
3) Extract each .rar file into this folder. If you are using an English build, you won't need to extract any .rar file that has a different language code (_es, _fr, _de, _it, etc)
4) After extracting all files, your folder should look like this:
...\\Mass Effect\\Binaries\\
...\\Mass Effect\\BioGame\\
...\\Mass Effect\\data\\
...\\Mass Effect\\docs\\
...\\Mass Effect\\Engine\\
...\\Mass Effect\\MassEffectLauncher.exe
5) Run the MassEffectLauncher.exe and quit immediately.
6) Run the "Mass Effect _code.exe" from the data folder. Enter your CD Key, click next, it will exit out.
7) Download and install the 1.02 patch
8) Run the Launcher again, hit "Config". under the "Repair" tab, you can re-create your shortcuts if running XP. If running Vista, I'm sorry, you can't add the game to the Game Explorer in these instructions.
9) Quit back to the launcher.
10) Play! (everything should work nicely now)

let me start by saying sorry for the way late response.
now ive done exactly as you've instructed, i have the files in a folder on my C drive i got the game loaded bt when i get the start menu where it says "press any key" the game crashes. when i tried to DL and install the 1.02 patch i got an error msg that read "please re install the game from the original source and try again" im guessing it cant find the ME folder i made.

Before we go and try another installation attempt, try running the vcredist_x86.exe file under the software\\visualCRT folder on the disk, then retry steps 5 and onwards.
If the patch install still fails, skip it and try again after step 9.
Also, what folder have you installed the game to?

That is a bad place to allow it to be, particularly with any Windows newer than W2K, actually, but especially Vista / Win 7. A separate "Games" folder outside of Program Files is in order with the recent Windows iterations.

so would u suggest going as far as placing it on an external drive or is there a designated "games" folder in which i should try installing it to?

Installing it on an external drive can lead to even more problems. It can work, but its often unreliable.
There is no designated "games" folder as such, but you can easily make one up either through windows explorer, or just during the installation procedure by selecting custom installation, and then creating a folder called "games\\mass effect" and then installing to there.
Before you try another reinstall, I would suggest going through your drive and cleaning out any files it may have already put in place during installation. You migt have to do the asme to the registry. Follow the steps on this EA Support page to find out how to do that.

Unfortunately, I'm running out of ideas, as everything that we have tried so far should have worked. I'll have to think on it some more to see if we can work it out.

Have you turned of UAC in the controls?
You said you are installing with Admin rights, but did you try with an admin account PLUS admin rights?
