More Adult

I wish DA2 was harder, i wish that every fight made me feel like i was seriously working my butt off but i play on hard/nightmare and i barely ever feel threatened. I also wish the graphics would mature a little. I didn't hate the graphics but at the same time the high fantasy style was completely taken away from this game. I don't want to talk about the sex scenes because they have been talked to death and honestly a sex scene does not make an adult feeling game.
What does everyone else feel?

For me the game itself was fairly mature (though not as mature as DAO or ME) but I found my perception of it coloured by the marketing which was blatantly (though BW would deny it) aimed towards the 14 to 18 year old crowd.
For proof I cite the whole "press a button and something AWESOME happenz!!11!" thing that went on prior to release.
Marketing was driving from the very start to sell this game to the younger "cooler" type of gamer; they wanted to follow Mass Effect and attempt to crack the action crowd. It didnt work of course because Dragon Age is an RPG and the universe just doesnt work as an action game.
But this drive by marketing I think resulted in gameplay being changed in such a way to accomdate the wish to appeal to the action crowd; which IMO is one of two things that seriously weakened this game.
I agree with you about the fights.
Fights were only difficult artificially; ie by having an increasing number of waves of enemies ninja dropping in heavy armour from open sky into the middle of the battle field.
My first play thru of DAO (and of any game) I always do without any cheats or mods. Second playthru I usually turn on the console and introduce some mods.
With DAO most of my second playthru I didnt have the console on except to correct bugs (like when I couldnt find Oghren at all and he wouldnt appear cos the game thought I already had him) and get me past the majority of Ostagar. I stayed away from blatant "cheat" mods. And even in later playthrus I dont really use the console all that much.
Whereas with DA2 I always play the game with the console on, simply so I can do the "runscript killallhostiles" cheat during the boring grindy wavey fights that drive me mental and you cant skip by.
Its gamey; its cheating, and I hate doing it but the Waves make me want to cry in frustration. The waves make it impossible to remain on higher difficulties because of how long and boring they make the game. I mean without the console or lowering difficulty id still win but it would just take me three times as long having to wade through dozens of foes for what amounts to a random encounter.
Eugh.

The one thing that most annoyed me about the combat was how stupid and boring the mages are. They are annoying, im not scared of them at all they are liek flies. They put up a forcefield and do a couple other spells but that is it! Its ridiculous!
Taking forever to kill isnt a hard fight its a boring fight. When you have to think smartly and think of your next move thats a fun fight. Thats why i refenced demon souls. Every fight i was thinking what i had to do next to stay alive could i take another healing potion cause i might not have enough later.

I'd also like to see the difficulty improved but with instantly regenerating health and mana I feel as if the franchise is kind of doomed as a dungeon crawler. Remove those cheap elements and bring back proper resource management and I think it would provide for a far more intense experience. Also, it'd make health regenerating and the like far more useful statistically speaking. But yeah, I think the automatic replenishment needs to go.

If you want to work, go get another job. If you want to feel a strong sense of accomplishment having over come a great challenge, volunteer for a social cause. Do something real and important.
I want to play games that entertain me. If I have to play any section of a game more than four or five times to beat it, the game is broken.

And you can do that just fine on easy as that's exactly what that difficulty is for. That said, some of us would like to see the more challenging difficulties provide an actual challenge which has no real bearing on your enjoyment of the game on easy.RinpocheSchnozberry wrote...

While I understand some peoples' desire for more challenging combat, that type of gameplay isn't really suited for BioWare games, which are more story-driven. I can't imagine trying to have a conversation with an NPC while getting my arse handed to me.

Yeah but DA2 wasnt story driven. So the combat was what spoke the most and the combat while fun it was never a challenge.

Which I'm cool with. I always play on Easy or Casual. I don't want to see the game take a lame turn for the "hardcore" with dark and gritty graphics and absurd gameplay choices a la the Souls games, as the OP seems to want.

Your masochist nature may require a higher difficulty level, but what you must understand is that Dragon Age does not have that aim - it is not trying to be the most difficult game you've ever played.
I would guess that it is a very small group of people who still find Nightmare to be too easy. Personally, I hardly ever play higher than Normal setting and it gives me enough of a challenge.
If you want to die in each and every battle (or barely make it out alive), strip off all your armor, use the most basic weapons and leave your companions at home.
I'm sure (if you're playing on PC) there are mods out there that makes it even more difficult.
For the rest of us, I think there is a difficulty setting to suit each person's needs and playing style.

Oh no, i dont want that heh.
I dont want it to be insane i just want it to be a challenge when your playing hard/nightmare. I want it to feel like when im playing hard im being given a challenge. And i just missed the more high fantsay style of graphics from DAO.
Basically what i want is for the series to keep the key elements which make it an amazing game and then improve on what didnt work. Make the game fun for people who want to play causal like yourself and then for someone who wants to play a harder mode they can and that mode is difficult. in DA2 it really really isnt hard to defeat the game on hard, using no real tatical options and not dying once.

Probably leaving some things out but these would be a good step towards a more mature game imo.
* If people want to play on easy that's fine but the game should be more challenging on all levels and Nightmare should really be something very difficult. I think it's way more fun when a game offers you some resistance even at the lower end of the difficulty spectrum and makes you strive to play better and try harder difficulties.
** For my taste companions have way too much baggage and I'm not crazy with the companion quest model. Admittedly it makes some sense in DA2 to have it that way since you're sitting in the same city for 7 years, of course companions will need to have their own things going on. I'm just hoping DA3 is more about a quest and lots of traveling more like Origins but with less freedom to backtrack. I want relationships between characters to be developed because we just spent weeks underground or killed a high dragon; not because X companion really needs some closure on why daddy didn't love them and "can we please trek 200 miles (or in ME2 across the galaxy) to deal with this very important issue?"

You're not alone, I want Normal difficulty to be challenging, without being tedious or frustrating. I felt like DA:O's Normal had a learning curve, and there were definitely battles that made me pull my hair out, but if I paid attention and approached the battle thoughtfully the next time around, it wasn't a problem. I really haven't had to do that at all in DA2...the only battle that approached the kind of gameplay I'd like to see was Corypheus in Legacy, and that battle was bugged for me, so I had to use a console cheat just to see the last cutscenes in the DLC.
My favorite DA:O DLC is Golems of Amgarrak, because even though the story is lacking, the gameplay actually put me on edge with a level 25 character. That was fun for me. I want a great story, and I understand the need for the game to be accessible to new players at early levels, but if you're going to invest the time to build a high level character, giving us a challenge (on Normal, please), would be appreciated.

Yes thats why i liked Legacy because finally we had an end boss that took a tatical thought.
I mean we are playing a tatical RPG shouldnt it feel like we are?
And yes i want chatacter interaction, i just didnt feel close to them in DA2. DAO was amazing at causing a reaction, when Alistair died, when morrigan thanked me for being her friend. leliana just annoyed me but at least it gave me some sort of emotion. In DA2 the only person that caused a strong reaction was Seb cause i found him so annoying. I liked Fenris, Varric, Isabella but i never felt invested.

I guess it's just personal preference. For me, I can give up some of the high fantasy for a more unique look.
I would like a mix of the both. What Bioware did for the DA series was to give it some intresting twists and a new look at an old genre. I liked the mix of high fantsay but then adding their own personal style to it.
lol and thanks for the cookie.
