I have the character creator downloaded and I don't notice any choice for weapon specialization.  I know the ruleset is NOT D&D and I'm trying to figure out if there are obvious restrictions built in for using weapons.

Will a Mage with the same level strength as a Fighter be able to hit a character using a longsword as often and do as much damage?

Will a mage be able to wear Plate Mail armor and still cast spells?

Can any character use any weapon?

A character can use any weapon as long as they meet the strength, dexterity, or magic requirements. We used to think that the same applied to armor, but there's some reason to believe that mages are limited.

Different classes have different talents, so while both a mage and warrior can hit someone with a longsword with equal accuracy - assuming they have the same stats - the warrior has abilities that do extra damage, such as sheild bash, overpowering blow, etc, that the mage lacks.

If you meet the stat requirement, you can use any weapon IE Str, Dex. Granted, your warrior would probably be better at swinging said longsword due to his higher Str but you could roll your mage around in full plate and 2 hander if you really wanted to and didn't mind leveling up his Strength instead of more vital stats :P

I also agree with Maria in that I too could swear that I've heard mentioned that a mage in plate would cause problems with castings. Will have to go digging and see if I can find a reference.

It appears that a mage can sling a sword, but with the additional training afforded to warriors and rogues, mages will find themselves eating the dust of a warrior or rogue when it comes to a swordfight. I've seen charactor builds with mages in armor in the spoiler section with Bioware's charactors. But only you can tell if it is worth armoring up your charactor when you try it during game play.

Given Strength and Dex affect your chances to hit and the amount of damage you do I would say no, a mage won't be able to hit as often and do as much damage as a warrior in melee, or to put it another way, if they can then you're probably pumping the wrong stats.

How ever the Arcane Warrior specialisation will let you substitute Magic for Strength, so you may well have a mage that can hold his own in front line, just don't expect him/her to excel.

If he/she meats the requirements, probably, but it will likely impose a significant mana cost penalty on your spells.

Provided they meet the stat prerequisites probably, with the excpetion of staves which are mage only.

Thank you all for the quick replies! I am really looking forward to this game, and while I enjoyed BG for the PC immensely it is nice to see Bioware venture forth with an original IP in the fantasy realm.
