Cloud? Squall? Ramza? Fei, if we're extending to other strong leads from that era of good JRPGs? Yeah, they're cool.

Yes. They are badass, and exeptionally good looking, they also don't hide their emotions a lot.

Um...Squall's main personality trait was hiding his emotions. Image IPB

I think that male Shepard is too masculine. But it is just my opinion, I am in a great minority here, nothing in the game is going to change for me alone. I like to play dudes from Final Fantasy. And just in case - I'm straight.

Male? Badass? Emotion? One of these does not belong.

Whatever. Men can prove their worth and have people respect them for the good they do without holding everything inside them like a ticking time bomb just because that's what's expected of us. I make it a habit to vent a bit to my friends and they still think I'm a cool guy -- I help them out when I can and generally get along great with people.

True that, though he opens up later on. Shepard only opens up when the conversation wheels occasionally decide to let that happen.

I agree with Mshep being to masculine. I imagine classes like engineer and adept being LESS bulky, but the models they use for the guys are all ripped. Anderson's ripped, Kaidan's ripped,Joker's ripped, UDINA is ripped. seriously, everyone can't be this ripped in the future.

I don't even get this. Wrex and Zaeed are badasses but it's not like they're without emotional displays. Granted, it's mostly anger and quick-charged glee but it's still emotion.

I think such threads are made because female gamers in general have a difficult time being acknowleged, and we would like our slice of game preferences to be considered. FemShep sharing animations with MaleShep makes the experience feel less unique, and like FemShep is second class as a character.  Gender stereotypes aren't really a factor for me, it's about equality in gaming, which we are still a long way away from, sadly.

Indeed.

I agree also. Everytime I get my hands on a RPGS I always create a female character. Just because I get a different experience in the game world.

Oh, I thought you were being serious man. I like to think I'm OK at picking up on these things but I don't know you as well as some of the other posters and I'm studying for a test between refreshing. :D

It's all good. I'm pretty sure most of the people I know actually consider me to be pretty emotional. Manly emotions but still.

No, as in I've watched Advent Children and played Crisis Core and I wasn't terribly impressed with Kadaj (but moreso I took issue to the movie itself) and while Genesis isn't bad or anything, he's nowhere near the top of my list either and, again, I didn't care for the game much.

Yet many games don't give you the option to play as female...AT ALL. When female PCs become a standard option for all RPG's I will throw confetti. *glares at games like Witcher 2*

Who in their right mind wouldn't want FemShep to be more feminine. She better have womanly animations in ME3.

She don't have to be more feminine just let her walk, sit, run, and cross her arms more feminine . She will always be a bad ass.

Heh. Actual conversation between my girlfriend and I from several months ago:

ME: "Some have said The Witcher 2 handles certain choice-related paths even better than Mass Effect. That sort of entices me."
HER "Have they given better animations to the female version of the lead?"
ME: "Er... about that."

Femininity would not revoke her badass status in my eyes. Not sure about anyone else.

I don't see how equality can be formed if gender stereotypes that create inequality are being enforced.
Female Shepard is one of the most respected women in the Mass Effect universe and I'd argue one of the most out of all heroines in video games, sci-fi, comics, ect. Her capablities is questioned based on gender once by that batarian on archangels recruit mission, and I really don't want to see bulls*** like that again just so other people can somehow "feel connected" to her through something sexist. I get enough of it on a daily bases working in an electronics department, from men and women alike.

She doesn't need to be a man to gain anything, but she doesn't need to prove she is a woman either. What defines her is her talents and skill. Not how she walks and sits.

Same goes for male Shepard of course.
