I can't save more than one finished game!

I am having trouble saving more than one finished game. I beat ME1, used that save file to start ME2, then went back to MW1, and beat it again. I accidently saved that second game over my first, so, after much frustration and face-palming, I started a brand new game on a new save file. My first (and second) Shepherd were female, this new one is male. I have played with this male Shepherd all the way to the end. However, once I defeat Saren and Sovereign, there is no save option, and no auto save.

I was hoping to take this male Shepherd into ME2 but it just won't save! No matter how many times I beat it, the last save will always start me at the final battle between Shepherd and Robo-Saren. I beat ME2 with female Shepherd, and I want to see how things might be different with male Shepherd and the different choices I made and how the different romances play out.

Is this just how it is? One 'game finished' save file to copy over and over? Or am I missing something? I want to play every way I can so that when ME3 comes out, I have a Shepherd (male or female) that I am proud of and can take into battle knowing I can kick ass.

Please help!

Each time you finish ME1, a unique save file is created. These unique saves cannot be accessed via the Load menu.
The only way you can access these files, is to start new ME1 game using an existing character, or via ME2 new game, after you have used the import facility in the config screen.

I tried using the 'Import Character' option in ME2, and it shows my male Shepherd game, but I can't select it because it says that is isn't a completed game. It actually lists all three ME1 games, but only my 1st female Shepherd is selectable. (is that a real word?)

PC or Xbox?
I only know about the PC side of things, so if you're running an Xbox, you will have to wait for someone who owns one to pop in.

Actually what Bogsnot has already stated is true even for the 360 (got bored and had a look here...). That the importer shows three files means they are available for importing into ME2; the importer does not show incomplete games.

To select the other games use the D-pad. This simple thing has caught out a lot of people believe you me.

Just ran through ME1 2 time with a new career and wanted to use it in ME@. When I went to the import career it was not there. How do I retrieve it?

If memory serves...'New game' > 'Existing ID'. Rest should be self explanatory I think.

The D-pad? Really? Wow...I feel like a noob. Gonna try that now.
