Game Crashes... Again

Hi. It's me, the guy who, a few weeks ago, had a problem where the game always crashed the computer at the same point.

I was given the suggestion to change my Nvidia driver to another type. I tried it, and it worked. The game stopped crashing my computer.

Until now. Now it's doing it again. On the final mission, actually, for extra frustration. There is one point in the middle of a cutscene that it simply cannot get through. My computer crashes so thoroughly that I need to mess with the electrical cables behind it to make it work again after it does. It's a wonder it still hasn't exploaded in my face (though it did completely burn out once, forcing us to replace most of the hardware).

I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, I've changed my driver twice, I've replaced almost EVERY SINGLE BIT OF HARDWARE, as I said, after they pretty much melted, and still the game won't work.

Any suggestions? By this point, all I want to just be done with this one level so I can play Mass Effect 3 properly than never play this game again. All I need is some method that would allow me to get through this last half-an-hour or so of the game without my computer exploading, then I can be on my way.

Thank you very much heads on and good day

If your computer is crashing and powering off, then there is no problem with the game, its a problem with the hardware.
We are probably looking at a heating issue, either CPU, RAM or GPU related, but given that you have to unplug/plug the power cable to get it working, I'm leaning towards CPU and/or mainboard being the cause.

That's the weird thing about it. The computer crashes, but the machine physically keeps working, like some kind of zombie computer. The fans keep spinning, the lights keep shining, but for all intents and purposes it's dead. There's no signal to the screen or the sound system, it won't react to anything, etc. This is why I have to mess with the cables. Merely pressing the button to reset or turn it off just won't work.

Note, that this isn't what always happned. It used to crash normally: one moment the computer works and then next it just doesn't. This is a new thing. Just yesterday we got this computer back from the store, after they replaced everything that burned. I am... reluctent to give it back. If only because that would mean that the people at the local computer store I always turn to are complete idiots.

Heat related issue are often the hardest to resolve, due to the way they can operate fine under normal testing, and its not until you really push the system and the temps rise, that errors start to show themselves. Heat issues also snowball, so what started off as a simple crash, can later on become a full blown meltdown.
It also doesnt mean the people in your local PC store are idiots, it just means they didnt spend the time pushing the system hard, and to do that normally requires someone to dedicate a good hour or two just on that single machine, and not that many stores, or even companies, would be willing to utilise their resources that way, especially if they have a lot of work to be done.

Download and install Speedfan, and keep an eye on the temps that your system components run at. You could also try taking the cover off your machine to increase airflow and aid cooling. Let us know what temp readings you get.

Also, could you please refresh our minds on what your system specs are, including the wattage of your power supply.

You want me to copy paste the dxdiag doc or should I use some special software?

DXDiag is normally overkill, just a screenshot of the config utility summary should do.

Okay, for now. I seem to have found a way to bypass the problem. I have downloaded Steam and Mass Effect 2 to my sister's computer, which is older than my own and doesn't have the new Nvidia type card, and using a disc-on-key transferred all of my save files to there. Since I was already in the middle of the last mission, it only took me about half an hour to finish, at which point I downloaded the new post-game save to the disc-on-key and back to my computer.

I hope that this means that when Mass Effect 3 comes out, I'll be able to import this save without further problems.

I thank you very much for your advice nonetheless, and ME2 or not, I am going to keep an eye on my computer's heat status. If there is indeed an unrelated hardware problem, I'd like to know about it. Have a nice day.

I think it was a general heating problem. Other games also crashed similarly. I tried to move the computer itself to right under the room's air-conditioner from it's former place. Hopefully this will fix it. Now that I think about it, it was a pretty small and hot place it was sitting in. My former computer didn't mind, but this new gaming rig heats like a small nuclear reactor.

Anyway, the problem is solved and I am glad for your useful insight.

Get the speed fan program or dl MSI Afterburner and monitor you heat especially on the GPU. You may also want to peer inside the box and make sure you have good air flow around your cpu and video card area. You would not believe how simply moving a card away a slot can make HUGE differences in temperatures.

In just a few months' time I have dust bunnies the size of rat terriers in my system. We live in a dusty, dusty area. I have to religiously remember to open up my case every now and then and get the shop-vac after them. Doesn't take long before the heat buildup starts becoming a problem.

Keep it clean and cool and things will work a whole lot better.
