Yes, this is yet another CD key thread. I've reinstalled the game (Steam copy) and when I try to connect to multiplayer I get a message saying that my CD key is unregistered.

It's not the first time I reinstall the game, but this hasn't happened to me before. I've checked in My Documents folder but haven't found any "nwn2cdkey.ini" file. I'm reinstalling the game again hoping that it gets solved, but if it doesn't, is there anything I can do?

I think steam comes with a generic cd key,and only hand out a few for people who want to do multiplayer.

The steam install puts the cd key file in some odd place, there are answers posted here in the forums i dimly remember to this, but you'll have to look - hopefully someone if they remember the exact thread can post a link.

Perhaps this helps --> http://forums.steamp...d.php?t=1711889

( i remember a lot more being discussed in these forums )

The thing is that I think that file was there in previous installations. I've found that thread too and I'll try to manually create a nwn2cdkey.ini file if all else fails, but I doubt if that will solve it.

I've found similar threads on these forums as well, but I've found no solution yet.

hey guys, yeh it's buried here somewhere,
i think it comes down to this:

The steam instructions (on CD keys) seem faulty. There should be one file " nwncdkey.ini " in ProgFiles->NwN2 directory. Contents :

[CDKEY]
Key1=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
Key2=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
Key3=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

that's it. ( ... )

It worked after creating that file manually, thanks to both. I had thought about doing that, but I didn't know if it would work.

*goes to play*

(BTW, maybe that fix should be stickied or added to a FAQ or something, if it isn't already).

Yeah my game is now saying this...doing what you said above does not fix anything.

Sorry Mokah, I hadn't seen your post. If creating the file and adding the keys manually don't work, I don't know what else you can do, I didn't find any other solution when I had the problem.

I'm not a programer, my computer experience is putting together machines and loading the recommended op system and applications

now where do we register these CDKeys so that when we log into NWN-2 for the multiplayer games we don't get the above error message?

rename the file to "nwncdkey.ini"

I know of a player who has Windows 7 (I have Vista), and had problems with the fix posted above (he couldn't change the file type from .txt to .ini). I'll copy his fix in case it can help others in the same situation:

You're not supposed to put .ini in the name itself. I used the nwn2cdkey method.

I opened another INI file, selected " new", copied the template below, added manually the cd keys ( thanks clipboard) saved it as nwn2cdkey without the ini and it appeared as a config file and NOT as a txt file..

On the install tab for never launcher  is a button that might help.

It seems to work for some and not others, probably due to the characters you copy paste out of steam have hidden junk ( like word does ) which are causing problems and which i think i've corrected. I do remember people saying when you do it you should rewrite the keys to prevent this issue, but i am hoping my current version allows you to just copy paste from steam to never launcher. It does all the work for you of putting the ini file in the correct location. But it should not harm things and it might be easier for folks who are not experts in working with file extensions.

Another button does the gamespy hosts block which prevents the failed authentication attempt.

Do you know how to access old cd keys that were saved in the old bioware website?

Yes.  You open up the booklets that came with those games and expansions and enter them from there.

I just reinstalled Nwn2 after quite some time from steam today, and I am having this error as well, I created the text file in my program files for steam, and went through the whole CD key text file business, checked it over many times but still getting the error for mutiplayer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't copy paste, retype it in. ( the app i linked above to, has a button that automates the process of entering the cdkey for you as well, might sidestep the error you are dealing with by the fact it does it for you. )

Okay for everyone who's had this problem i've figured out the problem. Literally the problem.
ONE.
in the case that you don't have the file "nwncdkey.ini" you must make it. If it IS called anything other than said file it won't work for some retarded reason. once you have this file made the format is to look like so.
[CDKEY]
Key1=(copy from steam; the 1st key code)
Key2=(copy from steam; the 2nd key code)
Key3=(copy from steam; the 3rd key code)

how to make the file...
go to notepad and type in the stuff i typed. then name the file of the notepad "nvncdkey.ini"
it makes it into a configuration file if you wanted to know why.
ALSO
put the file in the neverwinter folder that has the other configuration files such as "nvn2player.ini"
this is so you know its suppose to go there.

So... thanks for the input, but, how is that different from what has been said before on this thread? It's the same.

"nvncdkey.ini"
"nvn2player.ini"

You mistyped there ("v" instead of "w").

Hi all,

I recently bought both NWN and NWN2 off Atari as a download. I have managed to get NWN to work in multiplayer but not NWN2. I get the CD key is unregistered message.

I have Win 7, so I tried to follow Arkalezth's instructions for Vista/Win 7 users and I hope I got it right. I opened a config file, Selected new and then typed in the all the information exactly from my old nwncdkey.ini file into my 'new' nwncdkey.ini file. It still doesn't work. I tried renaming it nwn2cdkey.ini but nothing works.

Did I follow the instructions correctly, or did I miss something?

Thanks, in advance

Jay
